One of the things about trauma in general (and abuse specifically) is that, sometimes, the parts that were the most traumatic to experience don’t seem that notable to other people, and parts that seem the most “credible” or understandable to other people as A Traumatic Experience™ isn’t what destroyed you at the time.
It creates this weird dynamic where, when you’re trying to convince people to believe you that the situation was traumatic, you end up just listing the experiences that sound the most fucked up when summarized rather than the parts of the experiences which were the most fucked up as you lived them, in all of their nuances and complexity.
And sometimes, especially after gaslighting (which almost always involves the symptom of constantly feeling like you will never and can never be trusted), it feels like maybe you’re lying and manipulating people by talking about the parts that aren’t what you’re really thinking about, and so you feel guilty and ashamed of hiding the truth in the retelling. You learn to be terrified of people believing you and terrified of people not believing you. And it makes it that much harder to tell the next person, because the act of telling makes you question yourself on a fundamental level.
& I also think that dynamic is a factor in why it’s so hard to explain “unusual” triggers to other people, or why certain things that seem like they should be triggering aren’t, when other things that seem unrelated to your trauma are.
I’m drowning in the remains of the time
You were not a bad child. You were not difficult. You were not a burden. You were not evil.
You were a child.
It was the people around you who had a problem
And it was the people around you who were selfish enough to take their problems out on a child who was too small and helpless to defend themself.
It was the people around you who raised you to hate yourself.
And it's hard to believe when that awful environment is all you've known
But there are people out there who would be horrified at the way you've suffered
And there are people out there who would think you're amazing
It's not your fault you grew up in an abusive household
They're the ones who chose to mistreat you
And they were the ones who convinced you to blame yourself
And you deserve better
I promise you, you deserve better
ever since i was a kid i've been asking almost everyone if they want to be friends and i almost never fail to wind up alone anyways

I'm so alone.
