We must not mourn for too long. We must get our heads back in the game and realize the power we have. Start looking around you, read up on who represents your district at the state and congressional level. Read up on their positions, do you research, gather your friends and family and set your goals. There's a congressional election in 2 years, make it count. Let this be our lesson in taking back control of the narrative we want to tell. The sun refused to shine today, and every woman I locked eyes with looked defeated and tired. I myself cried many times throughout the day to the point of not being able to breathe. I am a muslim woman, an immigrant who now more than ever, fears that at anytime this life I have built with my family for 12 years could be taken away, that my fellow friends of color could be targeted and persecuted because we have a President who thinks law enforcement can do no wrong, for my brave, bright and beautiful sisters who only want the right to make the choices that they believe are right for them. For equality and the right to love who you love and the compassion we will not be able to extend to those who have fled extreme circumstances to find a place to lay their head and not awake to the sounds of bombs or cries of their children. For the families that have come here looking for a better life just as we would in their situation. There is room for all of us here. We can change how this story ends.

“We were both living in Istanbul and met at a club. He just came home with me and friends and we painted our faces I remember. We went to an abandoned building then with a bottle of whiskey and just started spray painting with our friends. That pretty much sums up our first date.... and then we went to a nice brunch afterwards – and then our second date was... my phone ended up getting stolen in Istanbul, so then the police setup a sting operation to get my phone back and he accompanied me.”

Why choose New York City/City Hall to get married?

“We’re getting married in May, in Iceland. This is just a last minute thing because it’s just easier, he’s from Sweden so it’s easier for paperwork and everything we thought. We always wanted to elope but our parents wanted a wedding so now we’re having a tiny, tiny wedding. So yeah, today was our ‘elopement’ day... you know, just for fun.”
