I Promise You I’ll Keep You Safe, Chapter 23
Laundry has never been Athena’s favorite chore around the house. It’s endless, no matter how long you work at it there will always be a shirt or a sock in a clothes hamper somewhere. She doesn’t mind it so much when Bobby’s home to do it with her, though. Her husband knows how to make even the most mundane task a joy. Today he’s invented a new game called “Harry or Evan’s.” The boys love matching but are also incredibly particular about getting their shirt or pants back. After innumerable meltdowns, Bobby went through and wrote their initial on the tags for easy sorting. And now that the pressure is off to correctly identify the owner of the article of clothing he’s made it into a game.
“Harry or Evan’s?” Bobby holds up a Kung-Fu Panda shirt.
Athena squints at the shirt, eyes narrowing even further onto the hem at the bottom. “Evan’s, he accidentally cut the bottom of it with his scissors the other day.”
Bobby chuckles as he nods, folding the shirt and putting it into Evan’s stack. “You also could have noted the hole in the sleeve from climbing the tree at the park.”
With a long sigh Athena lovingly rolls her eyes. “We’re gonna end up having to buy him new shirts every week with how quickly he’s making holes in them.” She pulls a gray shirt out of the pile in front of her. “Harry or Evan’s?”
“Chocolate ice cream stain on the collar tells me Harry’s.” Bobby folds one of May’s shirts and puts it in her stack. “At least the girls wear different sizes and have different styles, their clothes would be ripless and stainless and we’d never be able to tell whose is whose.”
“May’s would smell like that kids’ perfume stuff she conned you and Michael into buying her at the mall.” Athena tosses one of May’s shirts at Bobby’s head so he can smell it, his nose wrinkling when he does.
“It smells like this even after it’s been washed?” Folding the shirt, Bobby eyes it distrustfully. “That stuff should come with a warning.”
Matching a pair of Maddie’s socks, Athena arches an eyebrow at her husband. “The fact it was being sold at Claire’s is warning enough.”

One of my favorite micro madney moments is when she chose him in a manner in which he had never been chosen before, knowing she was safe to do so because he is her lifeline.

“Howard Han, will you marry us?”
[image description: a digital, faceless drawing of Maddie, Chimney, and Jee-Yun from the end of 6x17. They are all sitting around the light brown table on their porch, looking at Chimney’s giant heart engagement ring (not visible in the drawing). Maddie is in a blue, button up top. Her right hand is holding Chimney’s left hand, and she is looking at Chimney. Jee-Yun sits in her high chair beside Maddie, a fork in her right hand a pink sippy cup sitting by her left shoulder. She is wearing a pale, sea green top with rainbows and teal diamonds on the fabric. She is looking at her parents’ hands. Chimney is wearing a dark teal green long-sleeved shirt, his hand resting in Maddie’s as he looks at his engagement ring (not visible in the image). The image is on a light purple background.]
An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
Chimney’s apartment is somehow exactly what she imagined it would be and yet, it still feels sad when she walks in with him and sees just how void of his personality it truly is. There’s no photographs on the wall, there’s no colour and his DVD collection that he has briefly mentioned being proud of, is packed in overflowing boxes instead of on display as they should be.
It might not feel like him but it is all his and it’s not lost on her that this is the first time she has ever stepped foot inside his home. She thinks she might be the only person who has ever been invited here, biting down on her bottom lip as she moves towards the kitchen, her fingers running over the lowered counters as she makes her way through each room of the apartment. It feels strange to be here, especially after the day they’ve had; it’s even stranger to feel the kind of excitement that is bubbling inside of her because this feels like they have taken a step that she had once thought would be impossible.
It's almost two years since she laid eyes on Chimney for the first time and in that time she has fallen in love with him, she has cried about him to her friends, she’s cried with him and had endless conversations with her therapist about him and about them. She’s gotten angry, she’s laughed so hard that Chimney thought she was going to choke, and throughout it all, their relationship, save for one night that went too fast in a karaoke bar, has been firmly within the four walls of dispatch.
I’ll Give You Stars And The Moon (1.7k On AO3)
They’re sitting by the pool now, looking out over the city at night as Maddie breathes through a contraction. Chimney is a rock by her side, holding her hand tightly in his as they wait for the contraction to pass. That’s one thing that’s different this time, too. Chimney’s anxiety about this birth is virtually non-existent. He’s casual as he tells her the contractions are seven minutes apart so they have a little while before they need to head to the hospital. Maddie smiles up at him as her contraction ends, knowing that even though he’s the epitome of calm right now the minute her contractions hit five minutes apart they will be going to the hospital with urgency because he does not want to deliver their baby here. She tugs Chimney to her, fingers running through his hair as she kisses him. When the kiss breaks, Chimney moves behind Maddie, rubbing her back as they wait for the next contraction to come.
“I’ve got the baby bag this time,” Chimney kisses Maddie’s hair. “Double checked the breathing beads are in there.”
Maddie reaches back, squeezing Chimney’s forearm. “All I need is you.” She shifts, trying to get comfortable. “And a massive amount of drugs once we get to the hospital.” Chimney’s fingers move further down Maddie’s back, hitting the spot that is aching. She leans into his touch, moaning. “But you’re perfect in the meantime.”
“U-Um, excuse me?” Maddie turns at the unfamiliar voice, frowning when she sees a man holding a pizza. He can’t be more than twenty, wide eyes taking in the massive house in front of him. “I was just trying to deliver this?”
“Sorry, you’ve got the wrong house.” Chimney doesn’t stop his fingers’ motion on Maddie’s back.
“Oh, o-okay. Sorry. It’s my first day, so I guess I got a little lost.” A contraction hits, Maddie unable to swallow her groan as she leans forward, fighting to breathe through the pain. “Oh my god, she’s having a baby! We gotta call someone!”
Or, Maddie goes into labor while on their babymoon for Baby Buckley-Han Number Two, the 118 responds, and chaos ensues.
blindsided (4x09)
the saddest part of Maddie’s childhood is that nobody took the time to think about the impact losing her brother had on her. not once did either of her parents consider grief within all of that because they had already decided that their grief was worse so hers didn’t matter. and it accumulated in a three decade grieving process that played a huge part in her almost ending her life. and they still haven’t canonically spoken about it or apologised for it.
“You’re not a mother yet, you don’t know what that kind of loss does to you” said to the very child they forced to become a mother at nine years old. The very child who lost her brother and had her entire life uprooted in a way she had no say in at all. The child who locked one brother away in order to raise the other. She lost something deep and nobody took the time to think about her.
