I designed a set of icons for a t-shirt concept for SPiN, but we went in another direction.
Lately I’ve been focusing a lot on icon systems after realizing that it’s the perfect marriage of design and illustration. I also have so much work that I do at Sovereign State and in my freelance jobs that never see the light of day, so I’ll try to posting the rejects more!
I posted this to my instagram a few weeks ago. It’s basically an updated of how my last year went, which was actually pretty great. I’ve been working hard for the last year but not really documenting anything on here, which I’m going to work on changing this year.
1. Getting @lunathebugg in the weirdest way possible 2. Going to Chicago with the@sovereign_state team and basically being in a food coma for 2 full days 3. Starting @weekendersupply and learning a buttload in the process 4. Finally getting an “adult” couch, which may seem like not a big deal, but it is to me! 5. Going to the California for the first time ever with @rachleta and @mcmartha 6. Starting @everydayletter and following through everyday even though sometimes I want to poke my eyeballs out 7. Consistently being able to drink and hangout with @tharythary and@meemzyloo despite our crazy schedules (aka my dumb schedule) 8. Going back to Reykjavik and seeing the mountains again 9. Going to Paris and stumbling upon a bread festival and eating my weight in gluten every single day
I haven’t written an update in quite some time, despite the fact that I’ve actually been making a lot of new work.
Most recently I started a brand new daily project: Every Day Letter. I’m posting both on tumblr and instagram so you can keep up with it daily. I haven’t been this excited about a personal project for quite some time. I just realized that I really love lettering and I just wanted to be better at it.
I also got to table at City of Craft for the first time. It was an amazing experience and I hope to be there again next year.
Another big update is that I am buying a small screen exposure unit, so I will be able to screen print at home. It’s such a big step for me because it’s chunk of change and it’ll be interesting to figure out the logistics of doing it without the luxuries of working at Open Studio. I think it’s worth it though and hopefully the next year will be full of art making and experiments!
I feel so useless sitting here. What can I do to help Ferguson??

A little bit more than a week ago, I reached my 900th post of my 1000 days of design. I don't even know how I managed to reach this and now, as I'm in the last 100, I'm wondering if I should continue the project after I reach the thousandth post. My annoying competitive streak is telling me to keep going, but I don't know if it's overkill and I should move on to something else.

A lot has happened in the last 100 days. I took part in the Brooklyn Zine Fair (which was seriously the best zine experience I EVER HAD), did a lot of screen printing, started riding my bike again, but most importantly I quit my job at the National Ballet in order to go work at a small studio called Sovereign State
It was a stressful decision for me, but I think it's one of the best ones I made in my life so far. I am working on projects that I never imagined I would get a chance to be a part of and I finally have the design mentor that I always wanted. I have also been insanely busy with freelance work, including setting up a catalogue of Jack Bush's work. It's funny because I still don't feel like a "real" designer and yet people are trusting me on all these big projects. I'm excited for the future (for once!).
I've been pretty busy the last couple of months. One of the major changes in my life was switching to a new job. I started working at Sovereign State about a month ago and it's been amazing since. The nice thing about my new job set up is that I have a few days off each week meaning that I have more time to focus on my freelance clients and on my own personal projects.
I've been back at Open Studio printing away during the week and I have some new prints and some reprinted pieces up for sale at my shop.
I am having some pieces up at the Prints & Inks 2014 in Ottawa this weekend, so if you are there, check it out. I will also be taking part in a curated show at Typology sometime in the fall and will provide more details as the date gets closer.
Lastly, I am still powering through my 365 project and am almost at 900 posts. I think I'm just going to keep going past 1000, but maybe only update it Mon to Fri. It's crazy how that project has become such an inherent part of my life.
Yesterday I reached day 800 out of my 1000 days of designs and I gotta say it feels pretty good. I was feeling kinda stuck and uncreative in February, but I think I came out of it okay. The above images are some of my favourites from the last 100 days.

Technically already two years have passed since I started the 365 project, and two weeks ago I reached 700. Less than a year left until I reach 1000. I never thought I would let it go this far, I thought I would give up two weeks in. But here I am, chugging along! These are my favourites from the 600s.

Tomorrow is Canzine, the most wonderful day of the year! I can't believe that this will be my fifth year tabling! I remember my first time and how nervous I was because I thought I didn't have enough "street cred" to be there. But the wonderful thing about zines, comics and self publishing is that anyone can do it (that's the whole point!), even if you're awkward like me. So tomorrow make sure to come and say hi to me and the hundreds of other people who will be tabling.

Yesterday I spent a few hours printing the first of a new typographic series for the RIP Morgan Freeman show (opening night Oct 3 at 1313 Gallery!). I was going to print this series digitally, but I really wanted to have more control over the colours and having the ability to use fluorescent and metallic inks really makes a difference. I'm excited about how these are turning out so far.
So to reiterate, October 3, RIP Morgan Freeman at 1313 Gallery in Parkdale. It's going to be weird and great!
Yesterday I reached 600 on my 365 project. These are some of my favourite designs/posters from the last 100 days. I am also going to be pursuing this until I reach 1000, which is a nice big number.

I'm moving in a week so I've been cleaning and packing up all my stuff. I collect a lot of printed material that I find inspiring and sometimes I forget what I have. I wanted to share this awesome packaging for Opal which is an Icelandic black liquorice pastille. The candy company was founded in 1946 and Atli Mar was commissioned to design the packaging. It's so awesome that they have kept it to this day. It's simple and graphic, without all the visual pollution that is found on most packaging these days.
When I first got to Reykjavik, I hated the taste of liquorice, but by the end of the trip I was munching on it non-stop. I haven't opened these since 2011 and they just sit on top of a frame on the wall. Sometimes my eye wanders to them, and I'm reminded that good design is often very simple.
Anyways, back to packing!
I took some time today to add some of my zines to my Etsy shop. I will be making a lot of new things during the next couple of months, including some cards for the holidays and other silly occasions and new posters. Keep checking back!
