Flow: Creativity and the Evolving Self
Suggestions from his research are that creative people seem to come from either wealthy families where the children have been exposed to diversity or poor families and they have had to overcome some trauma, over 50% of the people he researched the father died before they were aged 10.
Also suggests that the current (need to check date of filming) idea / stereotype of the struggling artist is not necessarily true that up until the Renaissance artists were upstanding citizens and members of society. Perhaps now artists work is not received well by the public / community which leads to them becoming miserable, particularly amongst play-writes and authors.
