“Good,” she said, relieved and feeling like they really would be okay. Laila laughed, “You’ve said or implied it a few times, yes. But you’re more than welcome to continue, though.” She met his gaze and smiled, an amused look on her face. “Have I mentioned recently that you’re horrible at reading body language?”

“I can read,” Marty smirked before planting a soft kiss on her lips. He was happy, just happy, well he was always a pretty content person, but this was different.

“See, reading?” Marty smirked playfully.”

“You think I’m kidding? I actually have a note on my phone of all the crap you’ve said the past two years so I can use it against you in the future. And just FYI, all jokes referencing cold, ice, snow, and/or temperature will be counted as double.”

Laila felt relieved at the kiss to her cheek, thankful she hadn’t lost him. Especially over being worried about telling him when he’d reacted like he had. She shouldn’t have been surprised about that, though. That was just how Marty was. “I want to move forward,” she said, lifting her head to look at him. Laila paused, before lifting a hand to run through his hair, resting her hand at the back of his neck. “Forward with you? I mean, if that’s what you want.””

Marty took a minute to pause, taking in the moment. He missed the teasing, and using cheesy lines just to feel instant embarassment at saying them out loud.  “Funny you should say, but that is exactly what I want,” he laughed softly. It felt like it had been forever since they had been this close, and things felt new again. “Have I mentioned recently that I missed you?”

Laila laughed. “No, it’s much too late. I’m adding that to my running list of cheesy lines and dad jokes that I have for you. It’s two years long.” She looked at him for a moment, before leaning forward and resting her head against his shoulder, looping her arms around him. “I like it here, too.” At the freeze it remark, she teasingly rolled her eyes and did just as he said. Laila might have also purposely kept her hand a little colder-than-normal when she brought it back to join the other at his side. “Don’t be an ass about it, Murphy.”

She paused. “So – where do me and you go from here?”

“That list must actually be a volume, because I am a walking dad joke,” Marty cringed jokingly at the thought of how many bad lines he has probably said over the entirety of their relationship. When she put hand on his, he mildly flinched at the temperature, “That’s really cold of you.”

“I don’t know, does forward work?” He gave her a quick kiss on the cheek, “All I want is whatever you want, just tell me how.”

“If you say so,” Laila smiled and looked at him, feeling relieved. She also felt stupid for over-reacting and running like she had, especially when the cost was losing what they had. But this felt normal, so maybe things weren’t going to be so bad.

She laughed and nodded, “I can do that for you, yeah. Since you’re so old.” She trailed off as he reached up to tuck her hair behind her ear. Laila met his gaze and smiled, “Good.” Realizing she was still staring at him after a few seconds, she looked away. “Um.” She nodded to the table, “Should we go warm this back up or are we beyond eating at this point?”

“I don’t know, I kinda like where we are right now,” Marty flashed a small smile, “Okay that was way too cheesy and I am instantly full of regret. Never let me do anything like that ever again.”

He missed just being able to be in her presence, it was nice, simple, and disaster free. “I mean we could aways...freeze it.”

“Mm, yeah. I don’t know about that, darling.You want me to give you a list of reasons why you shouldn’t be the fashion designer?” Laila tilted her head to the side and smirked. “That face is your saving grace,” she teased with a laugh, giving his hand a squeeze, before letting go.

She nodded, knowing he’d more than likely have many questions. “Like can I build a snowman in my living room? The answer is probably yes.” Laila’s gaze lowered for a moment, before she sighed. She didn’t expect things to go back to how they were, she just wanted to make sure he wasn’t upset with her. “We’re okay, right?”

“I think I’m pretty stylish,” Marty playfully retorted. The banter was back again, it clicked. This could work, everything was out in the open, no secrets, but it wasn’t secret he thought he was a smidge in over his head.

“More like, can you magic me up an ice pack to end all ice packs?” he chuckled. “We’ll be okay.” He reached to tuck stray piece of blonde hair behind her ear, “Promise.”

“My dad always told me it was better if people didn’t know about it.” She hadn’t realized that she was holding a breath until Marty said he was okay with it. Laila playfully scrunched her nose and teased, “A schoolteacher shouldn’t be using double negatives.” Her gaze lingered on their joined hands, before she raised it to meet his. Laila give him a small smile, leaning over to kiss his cheek. “Thank you.” She laughed as she pulled back a little and shook her head, placing her other hand over theirs. “How are you okay with this? I’d be freaked out with a billion questions.”

 Marty playfully rolled his eyes at her correction of his grammar, “Maybe you should be the teacher, and I’ll be the fashion designer.” He felt himself smile a bit, things were going to be alright - hopefully. 

“Well, while you’re dad was telling you that, my dad told me that stopping things to question them can be great sometimes, but cause problems most times. Whatever can happen, will happen, right?” Marty shrugged, “That being said, once the initial shock wears off I’m almost certain that I will have so many of the silliest questions for you.”

“It’s better than not telling you at all?” She offered with a sigh. Laila understood why he was probably upset about it. If she was, she couldn’t blame him. “I was always told not to tell anyone. And that’s not an excuse, but when you’re told that so long it’s hard.” She looked up at him, “I’m sorry. If I could go back two years ago and tell you, I would.”

She bit her lip to keep from laughing too at the frozen wine glass, but shook her head and sat his down instead of drinking it. “Lucky for you, I don’t know what I want to hear.” Laila turned in her seat so she was facing him more. “I swear to God I didn’t ask you to come over so I could tell you and you’d let me run back into your arms or something. I don’t expect you to forgive me or be okay with this - I just wanted you to know.”

“I know,” he knew she had a pretty valid point. Marty couldn’t wrap his heaad around the idea of not wanting to share everything that happens to him with anyone who wanted to know, it was just how he was wired. His dad always told him not to dwell on the bad things, and this wasn’t bad, it was big.

“Look, I’m not not okay with this,” he paused to think about what he wanted to say next, “That doesn’t mean I’m not completely befuddled, but okay - sure, that’s something I can be.” He took her hand, “I’m okay with this, I think.”

Laila just looked at Marty for a moment, mostly to make sure he wasn’t about to have some sort of mental breakdown on her. She let out a breath when it appeared that he wasn’t and nodded, running a hand through curls. “I should have told you, yeah. I know this. I also run away from everything because I’m an idiot.” She paused, not even sure if she wanted to tell him what she was going to - but he deserved the truth and she needed to stop running. “I was going to tell you the night I broke up with you. I panicked,” she looked at him. “I told you. None of this was your fault. It’s mine because I’m a train wreck. I broke up with you instead of being honest and let you probably go around thinking it was your fault. And it’s all mine because I’m an idiot.” Laila went to grab her wine glass but then realized the second she tried to take a sip that it was still frozen, so she set it back down. She fell silent for a moment, “I’m sorry.”

“So you were going to tell me after we had alreay had been together two years?” he was trying to stifile the smidge of irritation in his voice, “Look I get it, I think, but still, and I hate that I’m stuck on this, two years is kind of a long time not to tell someone about something this big.”

He watched her reach for the frozen glass of wine, wondering if it was just going to unfreeze in her hand, and tried with all his energy not to laugh when it didn’t. “Here, just take mine,” he handed her the glass that was meant for him. “Look, obviously this important stuff, and I’m glad you told me. All I want is to tell you what you want to hear, but I don’t know how to without lying a little.”

“Yeah. You are.” Laila watched him pick up the glass - she really, really could have handled this better. “Maybe like – not act like it’s a milkshake from Dairy Queen,” she said, watching him flip it upside down. Despite the situation, she had to bite back an amused reaction at the ice magician remark. “Um - “ Laila looked up to meet Marty’s gaze, less reluctantly this time. He was still here; that was good.  “For as long as I can remember, I guess. But my parents are the only ones that know.” Laila paused, “Well, my aunt, uncle, and cousin do - but that’s only because my aunt has always known. I haven’t really ever felt close enough to anyone to tell them. Aside from you, obviously.” She shrugged, “How would I explain it? People would think I was crazy.”

“I dunno you don’t seem all too crazy, I mean it’s crazy that you can do that, but you’re not crazy for being able to prove it, if you couldn’t prove it and still said you could do that, we’d be having a totally different conversation,” Marty laughed, not a normal laugh, but one that came out of sheer uncertainty of what to say next. “I don’t know, but maybe - perhaps -  this would just be something worth mentioning before entering a long term relationship with someone...I mean come on, Laila, did you ever intend on telling me?”

Laila opened her mouth to reply, but honestly, the nifty remark made her shut it right back. “Oh God,” she said softly, sinking back into her chair. “Marty – “ Laila sighed and sat the frozen glass back on the table. She reached out to him, but wasn’t really sure if that was a good thing, so she paused midway. “Marty.” Laila realized her hands were hovering weird, so she dropped them with a slight wince. “Okay, you’re not crazy. I can - uh, manipulate ice? Make ice. I just made myself sound like a human ice-maker and now I’m word vomiting,” she pursed her lips into a slight pout, looking back at the wine glass. 

She gave him a few seconds, before continuing, “So you see why I didn’t tell you.” Laila finally looked back at him. “Marty – God. Please stop making that face.”

Marty knew that he certainly could have been handling this better than he was, but nifty really was the point of no return. He picked up the glass, and flipped it upsidedown, as if that helped at all. “Face - face - I’m not making a face,” he stammered, but he knew that was a lie. He shook his head, “How long exactly -- how long have you been an ice magician?” He put the glass back down on table.

She couldn’t help at smile a bit at the jinxed remark, because she’d always found that endearing about. But this – this was a little different. She had to tell him if she wanted him in her life in any way, though. “Alright,” Laila said, after a moment. “As long as you promise not to call the FBI or someone to conduct research on me.” 

She paused again. “Me and my mom – we have this thing. We don’t know why. But it makes it really hard for me to get close to people who don’t know.” She wasn’t sure how to go about it, so when her eyes fell to the wine glass, she picked it up without giving herself time to second guess her actions. “I don’t know how to explain it, so I’ll just show you.” As the wine inside slowly froze over, she looked at him, hesitantly. “Still don’t think I’m crazy?”

Marty felt his eyes go wide, “Well that’s -- that’s uh -- that’s nifty.”  The entire English language, so many words he could use to respond, and he decided to go with nifty, real cool. 

He looked at the wine glass, then back at Laila, and back to the glass, blinking a few times to take it in. “I mean you did that, so obviously you’re not crazy. A crazy person wouldn’t have been able to do that, unless I was the crazy one and I’m just seeing things. You know, this is starting to become major word vomit, I should really just shut my mouth for a minute.” He could not get himself to stop talking, and he knew it wasn’t helping.

“Hyperbolic,” she teased, sipping her wine. “Such a big word for a third grade teacher.” Laila gave him a smirk over the top of her glass, before setting it back on the table. “No, I thought you were cute. Honestly, I was nervous because you were older and I had no idea why you were going out with me,” she said truthfully, looking up at him.

At her change in subject she sighed and tucked a stray blonde curl behind her ear. “It’s just really complicated, Marty.” Laila worried her lip, before looking back up to meet his gaze. She had no idea how she was even going to explain this because it was crazy. She barely believed it herself sometimes, and she and her mother lived it. “I don’t know how I can tell you this without sounding like a crazy person.”

“Well, you did not knock my use of the word ‘thinky’ I had to redeem myself,” Marty chuckled playfully. “You forget that I actually believe I am chronically jinxed, there’s nothing you could say that coul dany crazier than some of the things that happen around me, right?” He tried comfort her, and ease the stress, but he knew ther was no telling what was going on in her head when she got like this.

“You blacked out?” Laila looked up at him as she sat down, unable to keep the amused look off her face. She laughed at the description of his day leading up to it, shaking her head. She didn’t even think for a minute she thought he was calling their date a disaster. “I had no idea. I thought you were just really fidgety because of nerves.” Laila rested her chin in the palm of her hand and smiled, “I thought it was cute. I still do.”

She nodded. ‘It does. I mean, we were together so long it wouldn’t feel completely new, I guess, would it? But we’ve also been apart a little bit,” she handed him a wine glass. Laila worried her lip for a moment. “Do you want to eat while I tell you or enjoy the food before I do?” She shook her head, reassuringly, giving him a small smile. “It’s nothing bad on your end, I promise. It’s just hard for me to talk through it.”

“Blacked out may be a little hyperbolic, but I still feel it’s a reasonable descriptor.” Marty laughed at her calling him cute, “Cute, really? I personally thought I came off as a bumbling mess, and was genuinely surprised when you agreed to a second date.” He took the glass from her hand, “I want to do whatever it is that makes this easier for you. I can be nervous enough for the both of us.”

She met his gaze and smiled, letting her hand linger for a moment, before dropping it. “I always know what to say. Yet everyone is somehow always surprised.” Laila walked back over to the table, finishing setting everything out. She looked up at him with another smile and nodded in agreement, “I think we’re making some progress, too.” Laila scrunched her nose a bit as he came over with the glasses and laughed. “Were we this bad on our first date? I can’t remember.”

She froze. “Not that this is a - um. “ Laila trailed off when she looked up at him, settling on taking the glasses from him instead. Laila smiled, lowering her gaze. She could feel the the slight blush on her cheeks, but pushed past it. “Thank you.”

“You know, I’m pretty sure I blacked out the like half of our first date,” Marty admitted with a laugh. “That day was a whole mess, one of the kids threw up on my shoes, and I ran late. It was a disaster -- I mean - the leading up to the date, not the actual thing.” Wow, real smooth, he thought to himself. 

“This feels different though, like new but not?”

“Thinky,” she repeated with another laugh. “You are something else.” Laila nodded at the question, because he was making her nervous. She opened her mouth to respond to that, but immediately snapped it shut at the next comment he made. After a moment, she smirked and shook her head, “And if I don’t want to forget it?” Laila reached up to place one hand at the side of his face. “You’re adorable and you need to take a few breaths and relax. Also thank you for the compliment,” she smirked and dropped her hand, walking around him. “Grab the wine glasses, Murphy. Maybe you’ll relax a little with a few glasses in you.”

He smiled at her touch, it seemed natural. He knew better than to get his hopes up, for anything to change. “I dunno, nothing I guess,” Marty shrugged.

“You know just what to say,” Marty went over to counter and grabbed the glasses off the counter. “Wine is certainly something I can get behind.” She was right, he needed to calm down. He put the glasses down on the table and took a deep breath, “I think we’re making some progress.” He was well aware of how awkward he was making things, he really just jinxing himself. Whateve can go -- stop it. There’s nothing that can go wrong; this was a chill, casual dinner between friends to talk about their relationship. It was no big deal.

Laila couldn’t help but laugh. “We’re both thinky people? Such an intellectual choice of words from the teacher.” She hummed in response, turning to face him again. “Me the complete opposite of going with the flow? You know I have a color-coded daily schedule.” 

They’d been together so long, and it might have sounded silly because it shouldn’t have been a surprise, but she felt a little tug when at him when he remembered where they were. “They are,” she nodded. “But I put them on the counter and just nodded for you to bring them over,” Laila tilted her head and gave him an amused look. She smirked and abandoned setting the table in favor of walking over and tugging his hands free of his pockets, holding them in hers. “Calm down, you’ll make me more nervous.”

“I’m a third grade teacher, ‘thinky’ is a reaspmable term to have in my vocabulary,” Marty retorted with playful sarcasm. He looked own at their hands and back to her, “I make you nervous?” He felt himself smile just a little bit, “I thought you were the one making me nervous. I mean, look at you, standing here like that. How could I not be nervous?” Almost immediately, he felt the doubt set in, “That--that was wayy too much. Forget that cheesey mess of a sentence please.”
