been reading Zizek’s debates with Laclau and Butler (Contingency, Hegemony, Universality). He keeps arguing for the importance of ‘class struggle,’ and Laclau rightly calls him on never concretely outlining what he means. Considering Zizek’s embrace of Europeanism, backing of the right in Syriza (backed Tspiras and showed no interest in the Left Platform), and basically racist position on migration, can’t help but feel that this anomalous reference to ‘class struggle’ more serves as a code for classical modernity and a suspicion of postmodernity. He has some good insights but there’s also a profoundly conservative undercurrent to Zizek’s project. Honestly I think Laclau and Butler are more on my side, even if they don’t formally affiliate with Marxism.

there were substantial points of The Communist Hypothesis I disagreed with, but definitely my biggest “yes” moment was Badiou saying it’s better to be a communist but not a marxist than a marxist but not a communist

just thinking of the S1 and S2 finales

S1: “I don’t think I believe in ‘deep down.’ I kind of think all you are is just the things you do.” “Well, that’s depressing.”

S2:  “It gets easier. Every day it gets a little easier. But you got to do it every day. That’s the hard part. But it does get easier.”

the way those messages fit together is also a great progression - actions are ultimately all you’ll leave behind, and if you’re trying to do something hard, sometimes you just have to work at getting in the habit.

I mean they’re signposting the wisdom especially in the second one, but they’ve earned it by that point

there is also this wise epiphany from the Russian spy: “So, these two were so consumed by greed that it destroyed them. You know, I came here today to blow up Disneyland. But now I realize, I don't need to take down capitalism. Capitalism sows the seeds for its own destruction. It's a snake that eats itself. It's only a matter of time!”
