Not much is said in this scene, and it often goes unnoticed, but this is where the shift begins. Truth or Consequences shifts the Tiva dynamic. It changes something. There is a new depth to what they are. Tony is less Tony, and more Anthony. He has his moments, but this moment shows it perfectly. If you are able today on your Paramount Plus account, go to Truth or Consequences. Go to the last scene. “Just another day at the office.” Yes everyone claps. Abby hugs Ziva. Vance and Gibbs share a look.

But watch Tony.

Tony the performer. Tony the spotlight king. Tony “I’ll accept Gibbs’ award for him” DiNozzo. Watch him shy away from it. We learn something about Tony in that moment. His motivation in the mission was totally selfish. He, too, was on a suicide mission. He didn’t know he was coming back. He had never felt that way before. His reward was just to see Ziva again. It was his only goal. And Ziva can’t look away.

Somalia ends the Michael Rivkin arc, but it’s the perfect mirror for Ziva too. All of the people she chose over staying with Tony, abandoned her, and left her to die. Tony walked into the fire to pull her out. Malachi didn’t, Eli didn’t, Michael wouldn’t have, and she knows it. Tony didn’t abandon her and wouldn’t ever.
