felicia: i just wanted to tell u im going to commit a crime
Matt: Yeah? What else is new? You gonna tell me that you're going to start wearing a leather suit too?
Matt: What kind of crime?
“it’s official.” bri smiled brightly at him, returning the nod before realizing her mistake and laughing. “that sounds great, actually. i didn’t get a chance to grab coffee either. i woke up a little late, and ended up rushing to get here. yeah, i’m pretty sure it’s not really considered healthy to be drinking this early in the morning.”
“See? It’s like it was meant to be” He said with a smile, before getting to his feet. Heading over to the small table right at the corner before the door, he grabbed his keys and his wallet, putting the latter into his pocket. He then grabbed his white stick before leading the way out to the streets of Hell’s Kitchen. Once they were both out, he locked the door behind them. “Do you have a coffee place that you’re sworn to? Because if not, there’s a place a few blocks from here that’s pretty good” He inquired with a small smile. “But if you do then I’m okay with making the walk. It’s up to you”
‘’ really?? you don’t say, hm. don’t worry, pal - it’s only a rib…. or two. if you’re lucky, these dickheads my cut our time short if we don’t speed this up. ‘’
“Easy for you to say. You’re still in one piece. For now. We’ll see if that’s still true by the end of the night when I’m done with you. For now let’s beat up some bad guys”
“well, going to church would help, wouldn’t it? seeking penance for anything you might do wrong and confessing your sins and all that.” she nodded with a small smile. “sounds perfect. no, i think that should be everything we need. we’re partners.”
“Great. So it’s official then. Murdock and Lawson is open for business!” Matt said with a grin, nodding his head happily “Now, since we had this meeting before I got to have my cup of coffee, I’m gonna go do that now. Do you maybe want to come?” He asked “We can consider it a celebration of our new partnership, since it’s not really acceptable to go for an actual drink at 10 AM”

she only paused for a moment as she listened to his words, noticing that he was having trouble getting up. “ fisk, ” she repeated. daisy was familiar with the name, having read reports from multiple sources. some good, some bad, some were nicely detailed plans of things he didn’t plan to do all too nicely. quickly the brunette moved to help her old friend, slinging his arm around her shoulder. “ you can always call me, okay?? we’re on the same team here, literally. — you’re literally almost broken in half. how many?? ” she shook her head. “ i forget not everyone i work with knows shield terms; rundown, matt. who’s here, how do they fight, is there any powered people, what’s their motive, what’s his strength?? i need the gritty clean details in order to help you. ”
Matt chuckled and nodded. “I’ll remember that for the future. If I live that long” He said gruffly. He was appreciative of the support she was giving him as she helped him stay on his feet. Hearing her question, Matt took a minute to listen to every sound that he could hone in on, quickly counting every criminal he could identify from up here. “There’s at least sixty of them out there” He informed her with a nod. “They’re thugs, so their fighting style is pretty unrefined for the most part. No powered people that I’m aware of. Though I wouldn’t rule out the possibility.”
“not a problem. it doesn’t sound preachy, it sounds like you might be one of the few lawyers with a soul.” she joked lightly. “really though, that’s a good way of seeing it. helping people is supposed to be the job description. but a lot of people seem to want money and power more than anything else. i’m thinking murdock and lawson, personally.”
Matt laughed at her joke and nodded his head. “Yeah, but I try really hard to keep my soul. Believe me. That’s actually the real reason why I go to church” He replied with a joke of his own. “Murdock and Lawson it is then. So, I guess that means it’s official? We’re partners now? Unless you have anything else you want to ask me?”
“thanks. of course, matt it is. that actually makes a lot of sense. if you’re working with someone you already know and are comfortable with, you’re going to be more productive then you’d be with a near stranger. i don’t think you could ever reach that level of ego. you’ve always seemed too modest for that. oh, yes, i’m incredibly interested in it. a lot of these people have far too much good to be arrested now. i doubt the city would survive without them.”
“Thanks Brienne. I just try to remember that the work that I’m doing isn’t for any other reason than to help the people who come to me for help. It’s not about money, or power or politics, it’s about doing good work and representing the people who need it. And yes I know that sounds really preachy, but it’s true. Great! So then I guess there is only one question left that I need to ask you: does Murdock and Lawson, or Lawson and Murdock sound better? I’ll let you decide, as my new partner; if you’ll have me, I mean”
“right, matt, sorry. just gotten used to all the formality during these kinds of discussions. it’s a hard habit to break. i completely agree with you on that. too many great men have been brought down by their own god complexes. or napolean complexes, i suppose. i’m almost positive it’ll be all too easy to use these people’s own egos against them when the time comes. it’s just a matter of going about it the way.”
“I know what you mean, so don’t worry about it. But from now on when it’s just me and you, Matt is fine. I mean, honestly, that is part of the reason why I’m interesting in working with you. Yes you’re a great lawyer, but you’re also a friend. As lawyers, our jobs are already filled with so many formalities, so I would like for my relationship with my legal partner to offer some balance to that. In my experience I’ve found that it helps us stay grounded and avoid becoming like those very ego maniacs we were just discussing. Ah see now, correct me if I’m wrong, but the way you’re talking, it sounds as though you’re already interested in being involved in this work. Is that the case Brienne?”

“a dozen? that many? i suppose that’s what happens when you draft an entire accords and get over a hundred countries to sign within a week. you miss things. with over a dozen, there must be at least a few that’ll hold up in court. they can’t ignore all of those. i think at this point, it’s more a matter of how many will be going to court over it, not if they will, mr. murdock.”
“Please Brienne, we’ve known each other for years; you can call me Matt. But yes that’s exactly right. That, and the fact that even though they have some of the best legal minds in the world working to make this stand up in international law, even the best can make mistakes. In fact, a lot of the time they’re more prone to them, because they become convinced of their own greatness and become careless; which is what happened here. Their arrogance and ego is going to cause them a lot of problems. I’m going to make sure of it.”
“i agree. i… don’t entirely know what to make of her yet, if i’m being honest.” she admitted with a laugh. “i was going to ask, actually. are there really loopholes? i thought it was just ‘you sign or you’re arrested’ no loopholes, no nothing.”
Matt nodded his head with a small smile. “That’s what they want people to think. But I’ve already found at least a dozen different things that should at the very least delay imprisonment, and buy anyone who could potentially be incarcerated more time. Now, whether they’ll actually hold up in court or not remains to be seen. Hopefully it will never come to that, although unfortunately it’s seeming more and more likely all the time that it will”
