I played what will probably be my last playtest before the Kickstarter launches which means I will have successfully played or facilitated the playing of Story War with 5 different and diverse groups of people! It’s been a wild ride and I can’t wait for this thing to hit the shelves. It’s a marvel.
Today’s session was a free-for-all with 3 friends that we decided to play full casual after a botched round where it wasn’t seeming fun because we were all too tired and drained to argue. Instead, we went full interactive storytelling, only crowning a winner if they could choose a suitably hilarious way to win (at one point, the red dragon used his gold, bought the clock-tower and “evicted” the other players and another round ended when the skeleton used the skeleton key to open the metaphorical door to Midas’ heart to give him an existential crisis, after which he left on a spiritual journey).
What we realized after playing through one full round is that we’d each won one round so we played a single judgeless round and it is probably the most fun I’ve ever had playing the game. I accidentally knocked myself out as the Lich by destroying the beanstalk and plummeted to my doom and then Ryan’s Angel and the Nikki’s Unicorn took out Matt’s Mummy on the flying carpet through a HILARIOUS set of actions that I decided to act out with a pillow and then, deciding that they as forces of good didn’t want to fight and just decided they loved each other.
Which is especially sweet because they’re dating.
And Story War just provides this wonderful experience to have fun with your friends in the most simple way: a game of make believe.
So I’ve played Story War from its most intense, screaming matches and all, down to a storytelling adventure with friends and I can honestly say it’s one of the greatest and most versatile games I think I’ll ever play.
