Ripper Street S5: Matthew Macfadyen interview with Steve Wright on BBC Radio 2
Ripper Street S5: BBC Media pack and Q&A with Matthew Macfadyen
From BBC Media Centre
Ā Matthew Macfadyen is Detective Inspector Edmund Reid:
Ā We catch up with Reid just days after the brutal murder of his long-time friend and colleague, Bennet Drake.
As if this was not enough to break him, Reid has found himself on the wrong side of the law - hunted down by Assistant Commissioner Augustus Dove for his role in the extra-judicial killing of Theodore Swift.
As the streets of Whitechapel echo with his name - terrible rumours circulating and reaching his daughter Mathilda, he fears - Reid knows that he must bring down the rotten heart that has installed itself in Leman Street, must prove the corruption of Augustus Dove, as well as the murderous guilt of his brother Nathaniel.
Bennet Drakeās death demands justice, and peace on the streets of Whitechapel must be restored. But how will Reid do this when he must simultaneously stay hidden from the police?
Q&A with Matthew Macfadyen
Where do we find Reid, Jackson and Long Susan at the start of Series 5?
They're all pretty shell-shocked really and they end up in the Alexandria, which is Mimi Morton's theatre, which she acquired and is in the process of renovating. That's where they hide out. And she allows them to sort of live there; they're on the run basically.
Reid desperately wants to pursue Dove but he no longer has the arm of the law. How does this feel?

Ripper Street Round Up
Ripper Street Series 4 has started on BBC2 (Monday 22 August at 9:00 pm
The Daily Express
āWhitechapel is still Whitechapel, but they have a phone system ā itās the march of technology,ā says Matthew, 41. āReid comes back, but thereās a different dynamic ā Drake is now his superior.ā
But there are light-hearted moments, too, says Matthew. āI feel like Ripper Street has always had a lovely balance between being quite witty and funny and being grisly and grim as well,ā he muses. āThe more confident the show gets, the more they can play with that.ā
Ā What's On TVĀ interview with Matthew Macfadyen, Jerome Flynn and Adam RothenbergĀ
While Matthew filmed Ripper Street in Dublin, his wife, Line of Duty starĀ Keeley HawesĀ was shooting hit ITV drama The Durrells out in Corfu. Matthew admits to a twinge of envy.
Matthew:Ā āWeād been filming in a disused hotel somewhere and she was texting me sunny photos from a beach. It looked very uncomfortable. It must have been too hot to work in⦠no, I was jealous!ā
The Guardian
The real strength of Ripper Street, aside from the delicate brilliance of its writing, lies in the sexy Mount Rushmore that is Macfadyen, Flynn and Rothenberg. When they scent blood or danger, or both, the three work in unison, hinging and moving as one, like conjoined triplets. Itās a rare chemistry and a triumph of casting, which has only cemented over the four series.Ā

Ripper Street S4: Interview with Matthew Macfadyen (Sydney Morning Herald)
Series 4 of Ripper Street will begin airing this Thursday in Australia. Ā Matthew Macfadyen made several comments about his role in Ripper Street. Ā Here is a small excerpt:
As for his character, Macfadyen says he is happy Ā to follow the scripts, which often arrive the night before filming: "I have great faith in the writing of [creator] Richard Warlow. It's refreshing and exciting because you don't know where you are going. The more twists and turns on Ā Edmund's journey the better for me.
"I do like Edmund, his failings as well as his strong points. He is quite a proud and vain man who can be spectacularly thoughtless about people close to him. But he is also, at heart, a good man who cares very deeply about people who can't help themselves or who are hard done by. After all, people are capable of revolting things but that doesn't necessarily mean they are evil. It might simply be circumstances."

Ripper Street S4: Interview with Matthew Macfadyen (The Iris Au Review)
Matthew spoke with The Iris about series 4 of Ripper Street. Ā Series 3 is currently available in Austrailia. Ā You can see Matthew's whole interview HERE.
He also talks abit about the future:
The next thing youāve got coming up is āChurchillās Secretā ā¦
Itās a one off film about Churchill and his wife, I havenāt got a big part in it and I havenāt seen it but itās coming out quite soon. Iām still working on Ripper Street Season 5 weāve got another couple of months left and then weāre done. After April 16th itās a void thereās nothing else, Iām adrift.
Is the potential lack of employment a good thing or a bad thing, would you like to have a bit of time off? What would you normally be doing if youāre having downtime?
Itās normal, I would like to have a bit of time off, Iām sure Iāll start panicking after a few weeks but thatās what happens. Iām used to it now after 20 years. Sometimes you have a run of jobs and itās lovely but Iām looking forward to a bit of time at home. Iāll just be with my family, my wife and 3 kids and itās just lovely being at home, doing the school run, normal stuff, reading and catching up on stuff and seeing friends.
