London Collections: Men
London Collections: Men has just finished its 3rd season and my great friend Becky at Marwood was showing at the accessories showcase in Victoria House. She invited me in and I took a look around, with men's fashion from the sublime to the creative yet fairly unwearable all in evidence.
Marwood has been making incredible steps across the globe, and Becky now sells in huge and respected stockists like Liberty's, Mr. Porter and Barney's. We had an inspiring chat about the necessity to collaborate and expand on ideas through discussing and sharing with other creatives, and it really struck home how I can sometimes feel complete ownership of an idea to the extent that it feels like something I never want to give up. Through intense hard work and sharing and bettering her ideas, Becky has made Marwood what it is today, and with that in mind, I met with other designers whose work I admire to open up lines of discourse into my ideas for shoots.
Over at the Hospital Club, I chatted to Christopher Raeburn and the gents from Norwegian Rain, which further helped shape and style a path for my stories to take.
L'Oreal Colour Trophy
One of the greatest things about living in London is the number of friends from Somerset who gravitate here for work and the opportunities available hereā¦ Dick Whittington style. I bumped into my friend Gerald a few months ago who had previously been my hairdresser when I was growing up in a small town on the North Somerset coast. He is now the Assistant manager and one of the senior top stylists at the Trevor Sorbie Hampstead salon, and Gez had entered the LāOreal Professionnel Colour Trophy Menās Image Award this year with his colleague and colourist friend Lizzie. For the first stage of the competition they needed to colour and cut a guys hair inspired by the AW13/14 trends, and style the clothing to suit this. The application for this first round required a photo to be shot so Gerald contacted me to go and do a quick shoot with a few different looks on a white backdrop and on location, the final choice of image being used as the competition submission.
The model we used for the first round submission was Ollie, one of Geraldās regular customers. He had already had the colour applied when we came to shoot him, so all that was required was a small bit of a tweak with the cut, some gentle product application, with a small amount of grooming from the Space NK store over the road. We had a few different outfits to try, and a couple of locations, so once he was ready we set up a backdrop and got a few shots off. The styling was mainly sourced by Gerald from a few high street shops and loaned out from friends (the possibility of a little bit of budget would come if we were successful and got through to the next stage), and Gez had chosen to pick up on the fluoro/safety orange element from some of the shows. We also shot each of the outfits on location in front of an old brick wall around the corner of the salon, which worked as a neutral backdrop with a bit of visual interest. We had initially thought the brick might be a bit too āurban and clichedā but the natural light on the hair and flash of orange in the collar of a tweed jacket we had lead to us choosing this image as our submission.
Having submitted our chosen image I awaited to hear more. A few weeks later Gerald let me know that our image had made it through to the next round and out of 100s of salons in London was chosen in the top 25 to then represent the London region in the Live Finals. For the next round, Gerald and Lizzie had to follow the same brief but present a different model and colour/cut. A picture wasnāt necessary for their submission but I asked if I could come and do the same again. This time around there was some budget which helped them get a professional model in the form of the excellent Selvin at M+P Models, who was used to a catwalk (one of the requirements of the live show), and a generous PR department snared them some suiting from Gieves and Hawkes and an overcoat from Vivienne Westwood. The outfit was finished with an incredible tie and houndstooth check scarf from another friend, Becky, the designer of Marwood, which complimented things fully. We had a lot less time on the photographic element this time around, as the group had to leave the salon in time to get down to the Grosvenor House for the live final, but Selvin was the consummate professional and we worked quickly through a couple of looks. Unfortunately they werenāt successful, but it was great to be a part of such a tight-knit creative team. Weāll smash it next year yeah?!
Having moved into my first home and set up a small office in my front room, I needed to update my website from a hand-made (and clunky) iWeb site with images from my uni course and integrated it with a Posterous blog, which had me fairly well set for a few years. Posterous was a very simple program which enabled me to easily post images and text via email which meant I didnāt have to depend on being on the specific Posterous site, or utilise an app on my phone. I also appreciated the very simple design of the site, and the clean and minimal user interface. This meant I tended to post fairly regularly. In April this year, posterous (which had been acquired by Twitter) was shut down, and I used this deadline for the launch in to researching alternatives. I had already used a Tumblr account for a few posts prior to finding Posterous, and liked the format but didnāt feel very inspired by the themes that shaped and contained my information. This has changed now, there are many different paid or free themes which are available and the application of a new theme which tied into my new branding relaunch tied the blogging and portfolio side of my site together. Iām still trying to get a simple way for auto-posting any blog posts up to my social media sites, but currently utilise the excellent IFTTT.com which can set a recipe so whenever my Tumblr account gets updated, it automatically posts a link and the title to my facebook and twitter account. The internetz is super good!
After a few years of a clunky iWeb designed site with uni work on it, I've moved over to 4ormat and am updating my images with new work. What do you think?
Eristoff & Snowbombing
No sooner had I packaged up the sunglasses and sent them back to Oakley HQ, than I was packing my snowboard and camera gear for a week long shoot in the Austrian Alps.
Snowboarding has been a huge part of my life, having helped the Soul Sports team in organizing the British Ski and Snowbaord Championships for the past 7 years, and having close friends who are riders and skiers, and working with snow photographers who had initially got me back into photography after a 3 year post-degree-hiatus, and it seemed odd that my two passions had never really crossed over. I am constantly in awe of the work produced by snow photographers such as Daniel Blom, Frode Sandbech and Vincent Skoglund, and the UKās very own Nathan Gallagher, James Bryant, Sam Mellish, and James North, so this job was the perfect opportunity to see whether combining my two passions would be mĆ©nage-a-trois made in heaven, or grounds for divorce.
Having never been to Snowbombing before, I had a few preconceptions as to how the week would break down with the majority of the action being music and drinking based. This turned out to very much be the case. The picturesque village of Mayrhofen was the setting, and this is what sets Snowbombing apart from any other festival, and the line up was an extensive and varied one, it was going to be a great week!
When shooting for an international alcohol brand, there are a number of fairly strict guidelines to adhere to which place emphasis on any images showing pretty people having an enjoyable but responsible time, without showing any signs of excess or drunkenness. Bearing in mind that the average Snowbomber wants to get incredibly inebriated whilst dancing to their favourite acts, I had a tough job to ensure that I got the images needed in the edit.
For the week I was to be following the Eristoff āWolf Packā girls around the village, in various venues, as they sampled vodka for the public. Part of this meant hosting a couple of Eristoff house parties, dancing/exercising with Mr. Motivator, giving out lots of free shots on the mountain, and VIP access for the incredible party in the Eristoff Forest to close the whole festival. It was a great week with an awesome client, and the combination of my photography and snowboard worlds was a great one Iād be happy to repeat.

Oakley double page advert
So while I've been assisting and digital operating for a number of photographers over the past months, including Will Whipple, Glen Burrows, Julia Bostock, Nicole Nodland and Ben Riggott, I have also been shooting some work for clients of my own. In April I finished producing product shots for Oakley's new range of "Big-UK-Capital-City-Sports-Celebration-one-year-later-than-2011" sponsored sunglasses for the Great British Team. I initially started to see small examples printed in style pages of magazines in the lead up, until I came across a double-page-spreadĀ advert in the free Sport magazine (which has since been featured a few times).

Attack the block
Forgive me for I have lagged behind with my blogging. It has been 125 days since my last blog.
In the time since that last post; March 8th, I have been busy with all manner of things, from assisting some new photographers, to holidaying in Santorini, to shooting some jobs of my own, to searching for and trying to buy a flat. Over the next couple of days I'll endeavour to highlight some of the awesome stuff I've been working on.
One thing I have noticed over the past few months is how little I have shot photographs for my own pleasure and enjoyment. I sat down and thought about why that was. I think I have been suffering from a little creative funk, which could probably be called Photographer's Block.
There are many places out on the internet where you can find information about creative block, and ways to remedy it. I think I had been suffering from it as although I absolutely LOVE my job as an assistant and a photographer, I had been focused on what the client wants and needs, and being very busy, and maybe had neglected the visual side of my brain that got me into Photography in the first place, the side that is excited and consumed by the way the light and shadows play on the wall of my room (without wishing to sound like a weirdo!). This, combined with the stresses of finding and buying a flat had compounded to stop me looking with that creative eye.
Knowing and understanding why this has happened has meant that I have now flung myself back into the wonder and awe at the beauty of a photographic image, a moment captured, and Iām really looking forward to heading out with my camera to see what I can see!

Media Molecule Portraits
Media Molecule are the gaming house behind the Sony game Little Big Planet. They commissioned Will Whipple to head down to their offices in the tech-haven that is Guildford, and get portraits of the entire work force. There was an interesting and diverse mixture of people who work on video games, from programmers and character designers to graphic artists, and what struck me most was the fun recreation and kitchen room above their offices. This entire floor was dedicated to the R'n'R of the staff, and had a table tennis table, huge video game set up, instruments, decks and a huge open plan kitchen. Having facilities like that made me (almost) want to work in an office again. The art work around this room (where we set up our backdrop and managed to squeeze a Broncolor para into) was fairly indicative of the laid back, creative space these people get to work in. Jealous.

Holly Willoughby. In Leather.
Yep. That's right. I assisted Ben Riggott on this cover shoot for the April issue of Cosmopolitan, and suffice to say the photographs we got are definitely a little removed from her current, wholesome (if you don't include Celebrity Juice) image.
As we were unsure as to how long we'd have Holly for, and had a couple of cover options as well as some editorial shots to get, we set up two lighting set-ups at either ends of fairly large studio 8 at The Worx. Once leather and stud clad, Holly was a pleasure to work with, and was even game for draping herself over the motorbike, which meant we got some excellent pictures.
