I found a deep, dark, and dangerous cavern when I dug a little further into my temporary cave house. Time for some torches and courage as I explore the depths further.

My little peninsula is looking a lot different on the second day. I have cleared most of the trees, giving me plenty of wood to construct a house and some nice space to plant a starting wheat farm.

The moon rises over the small peninsula in my new Minecraft survival mode. It looks calm and peaceful, but soon the angry mobs will begin to appear. The first night in Minecraft is easily the most dangerous if you’re not safely inside.

Here I am inside my little “cave house” on my first night in a new game of survival mode in Minecraft. It’s simple and basic, but it will keep me safe from the mobs. If I’m lucky, there will also be plenty of coal and iron inside to mine.

Here I am mining for coal on the side of a cliff in Minecraft. This is one of the big mountains near where I spawned in my new survival mode game. Gotta get some coal to fire up the furnace once I dig in for my overnight cave.

My first move in a new survival mode game is almost automatic: punch some trees. I usually punch just enough to gather enough wood to make a crafting table and an axe. Getting a wooden axe going makes gathering wood from trees a lot faster and the first day in Minecraft survival mode is a race against time.

An overhead view of the peninsula that I spawned into at the beginning of my survival mode game. You can see it’s near some pretty tall mountains and there’s also a nice stone plateau there. Those flat areas in the mountain biomes are great for mining coal. I’ll start by digging a cave there to survive the first night but eventually I’ll build a house and a small farm on the peninsula. First I have to clear all the trees.

Arrived in a new survival world. Getting my bearings and looking around to see what resources are like and where I’ll want to build my house. I’m on a little peninsula, surrounded by water and near some very tall mountains. Finding wood, coal, and iron should be easy!
