What are the job prospects after the course?

Students have gone on to write for long running drama series such as Waterloo Road, Eastenders, Holby City, Casualty, Hollyoaks, Doctors and many many more.

Some of our alumni have their own series' in development and some are off working on shows as script editors, story writers and many more production roles.

Honestly, the possibilities are endless - but you have to love what you do to succeed in this industry! It's not an easy ride, as some of our industry experts will explain during the course.

But that's all part and parcel, really. The course is there to prepare you for these roles, so you'll get an idea of what kind of role suits you as you go along!

Writing isn't my strongest point. I'm a better storyteller than I am a writer. Should I still apply?

Do you love television? If so, then give it a go. You've nothing to lose! Send us your work!

Will students get to meet industry experts? If so, are there opportunities available within the industry during the course?

Students absolutely get to meet a wide variety of producers, commissioners, writers, script editors during the course. Often, you'll get the chance to pitch ideas to them and on occasion, a story idea has been picked up (with credit given, of course).

Also, you will have an industry mentor who will work with you while you're writing your summer script project (dissertation aspect of the course). We don't have placements during the course, but you will get the chance to build up your industry contacts!

Not big into soaps and TV as a whole... More interested in film. Do you guys cover any film script writing at all or is it all just TV?

We encourage people NOT to use this course as a stepping stone into the film industry, simply because that's not what it's there for.

The course was created to give the next generations of television writers a start in the industry with a huge boost from major industry players.

We have nothing against film and certainly, some of our past students have gone on to work on feature length projects; but they've started with a passion for television writing and that's what this course is based on.

Do I need to have a background in TV to apply?

No. What we do need you to have is a passion for TV drama of all flavours!

I'm only applying if @philiplarkin teaches comedy

We can't guarantee Philip (sorry!) He's busy working on his own projects with various production companies; but we are planning to include more focus on sitcoms this year!

Is it just soaps or does the course cover different genres like sci-fi, horror, etc?

We cover all sorts on the course. 2 (out of 9) modules are concentrated on long-running drama, because that's the best chance for a first writing gig (and regular work), but we also have 2 modules dedicated to developing original drama and of course your summer project (the dissertation aspect of the masters) is a first episode script of a series that's entirely your own creation - so you have free reign to explore whatever genre interests you most.

We discuss all sorts of drama in class. This year Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones have been major talking points in many classes, along with French drama The Returned and we all love Scandi Noir.

What If you've no background in TV or writing plays or anything like that whatsoever? I work in admin, but I've been writing short stories for years as a hobby.

That's fine. Please do consider applying, as we're very interested in the quality of your ideas and whether or not you can tell a story.

What also helps is that you demonstrate a passion for TV; watch TV drama all the time, and desperately want to write stories for TV.

We've had people come from a wide range of backgrounds; our former students include firefighters, journalists, homemakers, nurses, etc.

All people who have demonstrated a passion for television - who have all gone on to work in the television industry in various roles.

Is the course only available in glasgow?

At the moment, yes.  That may change in the future. There are discussions about it becoming available in London and in New York, but for now it's exclusive to Glasgow!

Some of our former students have commuted from places as far away as London and the Isle of Skye, so it's not impossible if you're based somewhere other than Glasgow.

What TV shows would be studied during the course? can we choose to study a show we're passionate about?

It varies.  We tend to study Waterloo Road, Doctors, River City and Hollyoaks in depth, with story conferences attended by professionals working on those shows.  Next year we are looking to include Eastenders. And of course, we do throw popular shows such as Breaking Bad, The Sopranos and all the major US dramas into the mix.

Can the course be done part time? I have a full time job and don't think I could afford to leave it?

It can be done part time.   We strongly advise against trying to do it and a full time job.  Although there are only 2 days of classes each week there is a considerable amount of writing work to be done the rest of the time.

It says industry professionals have taught on the course? Who has taught/is teaching at the moment?

Ann Marie Di Mambro and Chris Dolan teach on the course and continue to shape and develop it.  We also have an impressive number of industry professionals who run workshops - last years these included Gaynor Holmes [exec. producer BBC Scotland Drama], Mal Young,  Jane Dauncey [producer Law and Order UK] Chris Aird [Head of Drama BBC Scotland]  Ann McManus and Eileen Gallagher [creators of Shed Production Company and shows like Waterloo Road, Footballers Wives, Bad Girls]  Ross Murray and Kim Kinnie from Drama Development at STV.

Do you need any qualifications to apply for the masters?

Ideally you should have a first degree.  However, if you have significant experience in working in TV and/or particularly good writing samples then you might be accepted straight onto the Masters.

In terms of writing samples, is drama looked upon more favourably than comedy?

Not at all - we accept any and every genre!Also, it's worth mentioning that whilst we prefer scripts; we also accept plays, short stories, novels and whatever else you may have.Your portfolio will give you the chance to demonstrate your writing style, so it's crucial that you submit your best work!On occasion, sponsors have decided on a candidate based entirely on their portfolio alone; so don't hang about, get yours in ASAP!

Have any students gone on to write for any shows we might know?

Yes! 

Our students have written for/are currently writing for:

- Being Victor (MTV)

Some of our alumni are also developing work with independent production companies as well as Channel 4, BBC Scotland, BBC Radio 4, BBC Alba, BBC Comedy, CBBC, ITV, Comedy Central and more.

How many days 'in class' is required per week? Can I have a part-time job at the same time?

You can certainly have a part-time job at the same time.

Time spent in class varies from semester to semester, but you're not in for anymore than 16 hours per week at most.

A lot of our past students simply reduced their hours in their full time jobs to study with us.

One or two even kept their full time hours on, working nightshifts - but we'd advise against doing that! You wouldn't want to stretch yourself too thin.

It's 2014, which means the applications for this year's Masters in Television Fiction Writing are now being accepted.
