Pairing: Edward Guinness x reader
Warning: angst, cause ig that’s what i’m good at :)
A/N: kind of inspired by edward and ellen’s story but with a twist
It was never meant to happen. You said it first, “It is merely a professional relationship to help each other.”
But that was almost a year ago, before the weekly meeting, before you got to know him, before you let him into your world.
You said it several times with him beside you on your bed as his arm wrapped around you, keeping you as close as possible to him, “No feelings involved.”
But you weren’t sure whether you said it to him or you were trying to convince yourself.
You noticed how your heart jump at the slightest mention of his name or how your chest warmed every time you see him standing at your doorway or how the edge of your lips turned up into a smile when you listen to him talk. You hated it. You hated every second of it. You hated the fact that you found home in the first person you should’ve despised most.
The worst part, he felt the same way. You lived in his mind every second of his day, no matter how much work he had forced himself to do, he couldn’t wipe the image of you away. It was almost like you were haunting him. The sound of your laugh, the image of your smile, the feeling of your fingertips on his skin, it concurred him.
Each night he told himself that you were out of his league in the worst way possible, but deep down he couldn’t lie about how he felt whenever he was around you. So just like every night, he fled to visit you with an excuse of “urgent meeting”.
Little did he know, that night would be different.
He stood on the same spot he did every night, under your window. A small rock sat in his grip as he hesitated. His mind told him to ride back to his home, although his heart longed to have you in his arms. Just like every night, he listened to the latter.
He threw the rock to your window, hard enough to reach the second storey, but not too hard to break the glass. A soft clank echoed through the street.
One second, two seconds, usually by the third you would appear, but that night, only silence responded to him. He raised his eyebrow in confusion as his chest slightly tightened. Were you asleep or were you ignoring him?
He leaned down to grab another rock near his right boot and threw it again to your window. One second, two seconds, three seconds, no sign of you.
He held his breath for a moment as he tightened his grip around nothing. His eyes never left your window, hoping all his negative thoughts were merely imagination.
“Where are you?” He muttered to himself.
As he grew impatient, he moved toward the door. His steps were rushed. His heart beat faster each second. Once he reached it, he swung the door open and jogged up the stairs before the front door even closed.
His chest moved up and down as his breathing quickened as he halt in front of your room. He flexed his hand before reaching for the door.
Knock, knock, knock
One second, two seconds, three seconds, no respond.
He called out your name softly. “Please open the door.” But only silence answered him.
“If this is the last time that we’ll see each other, can I at least see you?” His voice cracked at the end.
“She’s not there.” He slightly jumped as he turned to see a lady standing just a few feets away from him. She stayed next to her room, he knew that because she bumped into her several times when he was leaving.
He furrowed his eyebrows. What does she mean?
“She left last night, sent to New York, if I’m not mistaken.” The woman continued.
Edward froze. His heart stopped for a second. “New York? By whom?”
The woman shrugged. “Your people, I suppose. They see her as a threat to your community, at least that was what the man said last night when he took her. She didn’t even bring any of her belongings with her. Poor woman, she was kind to us.”
His jaw grew slacked at the information. No one said anything to him that morning, not his reckless brother, not the other, not his sister, not even Rafferty. The thought of his own family planning of sending you away behind his back made him fume.
Then he turned to your door. His face fell. His chest ached. He shook his head as he denied the reality of you not being on his sight if he opened the door.
“Good evening.” He simply said to the woman, without looking. He walked past her, down the stairs, out of the building.
Each step his chest grew heavier, making him harder to breathe. His head felt light once he reached his black stallion.
