seeing people call george "overrated" or say he "can't handle pressure" after spa is driving me insane because did we all watch the same race???

before we even got to the hamilton incident, george's car had already gone wrong.

he came out of turn 1 around 30–40% down on battery, the battery didn't recharge properly, the turbo wasn't deploying correctly, and by the time he reached the top of eau rouge he had effectively no electrical deployment left. at spa, where one of the longest flat-out sections on the calendar comes immediately after eau rouge, that's basically a death sentence. he wasn't "defending badly." he was a sitting duck. mercedes later confirmed there was a deployment issue affecting all of its power units, with george being hit the hardest.

and can we also stop pushing this "it's his driving style" narrative?

mercedes literally investigated that. george himself said they checked whether it was something he was doing with the brakes or throttle and ruled it out. the straight-line deficit wasn't because he'd suddenly forgotten how to drive, it was a technical issue they've been chasing for multiple weekends.

is george perfect? obviously not. no driver is.

but acting like he's suddenly a bad driver because he got swallowed on the kemmel straight when his car had no deployment is just ignoring the actual facts.

you don't have to like george. you don't have to support mercedes. but at least criticize him for things that are actually his fault.

because this narrative that he's been "exposed" is laughable when his own team has repeatedly acknowledged there was a genuine technical problem affecting his performance.

f1 is complicated. sometimes a driver loses because they make a mistake. sometimes they lose because the car underneath them simply isn't doing what it's supposed to do.

spa was overwhelmingly the latter.

The narrative of George "begging for teams" is so funny because the most he did is cold-emailing in F1 and most of the times leading up to his career it's

1. Gwen Lagrue noticed him since karting, almost recruited him to the Lotus Junior Team, gave him a seat at Eurocup Formula Renault, brought him into Mercedes for the second time (even after George rejected them for the first time)

2. Christian Horner name dropping since his F2 years and never moved on

3. Marcin Budkowski saying George should call him if that austrian rat didn't

4. Helmut Marko admitting on missing out on George Russell for Red Bull Junior Team

5. Oliver Oakes saying that Hitech wouldn't be anywhere without George despite him only being there for 1 season and in the equivalent of FRECA
