Wasn’t Lena Dunham that one woman who admitted to sexually assaulting her younger sister for, like, nine years?
CHANGE MY MIND
lapidot is overrated
Why?
so hey guys quick discourse what do we call her PD or Rose
I’ll just call her Rose Diamond from now on.
I don’t get it.
Why do people even like Lapis in the first place? All she’s ever done is antagonize, manipulate, and leave, not necessarily in that order. She literally tortured a gem into insanity, and tried to justify it with ‘I Was Protecting You ™ ‘. She emotionally manipulates everyone she spends an extended period of time with. She never once accepts fault for her actions, and never once apologizes for any of the shit she causes.
So what makes such an abhorrent character such a popular one?
the gem she ‘tortured’ had been emotionally and physically abusing her the entire time they were together: she grabbed her by her arm, and dragged and threw her around like a doll, yelling in her face, and then tried to use her war trauma to manipulate her into killing her only friend. standing up to your abuser is not abuse. fighting back against someone who’s attacking you and treating you like garbage is not wrong. (also, jasper was pretty insane beforehand anyways. lotta’ baggage there.)
i don’t know where you got the emotional manipulation from, though. all she’s ever done is told people the facts (that the crystal gems hurt her, that the earth would be dangerous with the diamonds etc) and let them make whatever decision they would based on that. even if she reacted negatively to their response, she never used manipulation to try to change them.
emotional manipulation requires the intentional misuse or obstruction of information, or using some kind of emotional attachment as bait to get someone to do what you want. she hasn’t done any of that. plus, all of these actions were made out of concern for safety; it wasn’t her own personal desire. she genuinely thought these people were in danger and was trying to warn them.
she accepted fault for her actions and expressed remorse for them, like when she showed guilt for hurting greg in ‘alone at sea’ and talked about how awful she felt about how she treated jasper. honestly, every gem has done something just as bad as her, sometimes even worse - like when pearl almost let steven fall to his death. peridot tried to kill them all numerous times too, but it’s kinda’ brushed aside because it was done in a more cartoonish way.
peridot never apologized, but you did see her feel remorse for it, and you saw her character grow in such a way that you knew she wouldn’t hurt anyone intentionally again. the same goes for lapis, but on top of everything else she’s dealing with thousands of years worth of intensive ptsd and emotional scarring, so her development is a little more wonky.
this is actually why she’s popular among fans; recovery and healing is not always a smooth ride upwards. in reality, it’s far more common that people struggle with the process for years, even decades. she speaks to a lot of people who are recovering from situations similar to hers, and considering that her character itself is based on a comic rebecca sugar made about a bad relationship she was in, it’s doubtless that rebecca put her in the show for people to connect and relate to.
if you don’t relate to her, that’s fine, but making her out to be this horrible, cruel-hearted demon is innacurate at best. i know the phrase ‘complex character’ is thrown around a lot but that’s really all she is, no more and no less than everyone else in the show. she only gets singled out because she’s a more down-to-earth and gritty representation of what depression and ptsd are really like, and how those things effect your personality and decision making, which a lot of people can’t understand, or find tedious and boring, when for a lot of other people, it’s their reality.
Hoookay, looks like I gotta bring up some shit.
Jasper did not abuse anyone. She never has. Literally nothing she did equates abuse, Physical or Emotional.
The reason Lapis was kept under lock and key during her second physical appearance is because A) She’s a pretty powerful gem with no apparent allegiances, B) she has a habit of fucking off into deep space anytime something goes wrong, and C) She is the only gem who has actually been on Earth in thousands of years for longer than a few seconds.
Jasper didn’t manipulate Lapis, she tried to reason with her. She likely knew, from interrogations, that Lapis thinks she was being imprisoned intentionally by the CGs, and had no reason to disbelieve this. All she did was try to convince Lapis that they had a common enemy, which isn’t really manipulation. What is manipulation, though, is tricking someone into giving up their agency and trapping them at the bottom of the ocean.
And Lapis has been Emotionally Manipulative since her introduction, using every connection she’s had with anyone to attempt to get her way (Trying to get Steven to leave Earth, trying to get Peridot kicked out of the Barn, etc.). Even her design is emotionally manipulative, since nobody seems to want to admit that Lapis was the more toxic part of Malachite.
Also, Lapis hasn’t actually apologized. Not once. The only reason she ever seems to show remorse is when the consequences of her actions seem to be catching up to her, like when the gem she tortured for a full half a year developed a fanatical obsession with her, or when her abuse of others and self isolation left her with nobody.
And as for the Peridot thing, Peridot had legitimate reasons to believe her life was in danger as long as she was still on Earth. Her actions never left lasting negative impressions, and ultimately had about the same level of hostility as two people on opposite sides in a battle launching artillery shells at each other.
And using the ‘recovery’ thing as a justification for her actions doesn’t really work, since PTSD doesn’t turn you into an abusive asshole. Having a psychological disorder doesn’t mean you get to treat everyone like shit.
Lapis might have a lot of shit to unpack, but you can’t justify the shit she’s done with the ‘Complex Character ™ ‘ argument.
I don’t get it.

Hey, it’s not cool to put hate in the main lapis tag, y'know. You should probably untag that or people might get upset.
If I didn’t tag it, I wouldn’t see people’s responses. I am legitimately trying to figure out others’ reasons for liking a character I don’t like. I can’t do that without another’s opinion.
I don’t get it.

In response to the person who wants to see my opinion on Rose (I won’t name names, because I don’t care to. That’s on you.)
My opinion on Rose is that she fucked up immensely, but her heart (Metaphorically) was ultimately in the right place.
Yes, Rose did a lot of shady things. Yes, she did cause one of the most devastating events in canon. Yes, she did cause untold suffering because of one foolish act. The difference between Rose and Lapis, however, is that Rose wasn’t trying to save herself, she was trying to save others.
You can call her selfish all you like. Say it ‘til you’re blue in the face, I don’t give a damn. That won’t change the fact that she tried literally everything short of Regicide to protect Earth and all its inhabitants. That, in my opinion, is the furthest thing from selfish I can think of.
I don’t get it.

Well then...
Looks like Zamii070 deserves an apology. She was right after all.
Lmaoo Noah Fence but what STEM major talks like this?
One whose dialogue is written by a liberal arts major that’s salty that they can’t get a job that actually makes a livable wage because they spent thousands of dollars to get a degree in post-cultural marxist children's literature.
