Reducing Call Me by Your Name to a story about pedophilia is so stupid to me. Not that law matters in the context of morality, but in Italy in the 80s Elio would have been old enough to be in a relationship with Oliver. The age difference in the movie, to me at least, does not exist in a way to taint the relationship but to put Oliver in a position where he has come to terms with how much he is willing to accept his queer identity and therefore making it a coming of age movie for Elio and not necessarily Elio and his partner. A movie about two younger queer people would be forced to spend a little time with the coming of age of both characters and would have distracted from Elio’s. Beyond this though, Call Me by Your Name does not exist to normalize the queer experience in say the same way something like Love, Simon does. If it was trying to accomplish that it would not have been set in Italy in the 80s but rather in modern day and probably in the US. The movie doesn’t claim to be a moral compass the way that Love, Simon does. There is a misconception about film in general lately that movies must adhere to our sense of morality but film shows us things outside of our norm and sometimes that involves things outside of our moral mindset.
