BIOGRAPHY

Technically speaking, Kendall Rosenthal isn’t his name. Truth be told, he’s forgotten what it was once upon a time since he’s held so many thanks to the nomadic nature of his family.

Speaking of, that same family did their best when it came to the care and raising of a human. They loved him, young Kendall wanted for nothing and loved the adventure of traveling then exploring somewhere new with them. However, the adults admittedly underestimated how observant he could be which is what led to them eventually telling him about their nature as vampires.

Something that was a constant in life just like the ever-growing list of names and residences was the family’s encouragement of their charge expanding his knowledge. They stressed the importance of the knowledge that could be gained from books as well as experience or stories meant to caution him away from making a poor decision like they once had.

Overall, his life was as normal as it could be when living with a found family of vampires. But what it lacked in being typical was more than made up for in terms of happiness and safety.

That is until after Kendall’s twenty fourth birthday. While traveling, the family came into conflict with another group of vampires. A group that had not taken too kindly to having what they believed to be competition for space and resources. (violence tw) And upon noticing the lone human with them, they decided to send a message through him by way of grave injury.

When Kendall woke up, two things swiftly became apparent. The first was bewilderment in regards to his speedy recovery. The second? He was so thirsty. Thankfully and luckily, his family had come prepared.

Once he was a little more aware, they caught him up to speed about what had happened. He learned about their split-second, unanimous decision to turn him in order to save him as well as the fight that followed and how it sent his attackers running off to parts unknown.

It took some time before he eventually gained control over his thirst plus his newfound abilities. But once he did, something new washed over Kendall. Alongside the love of adventure, he also wanted to help those less fortunate than himself. This did send him on a separate path plenty of times throughout his life yet eventually the family came together again.

Not too long ago - although his sense of time has been skewed for quite awhile - during a late night out, the head of the family finally came clean about how he joined them. A question that had gone unanswered but ceaselessly pondered until this point in time. That night, Kendall learned about what had happened all those years ago. One mystery had been solved yet the door had just opened to reveal another.

His wish to solve this mystery has sent them down separate paths once more. And truth be told, Kendall’s ready to settle in one place for even a little while. While he does appreciate adventure, even some vampires grow weary of constant travel and he is one of them. Which is what brought him to America, chasing clues in between getting the experience of going to college as well as working various jobs. Not to mention the feeling of being properly on his own, something that humans or similarly mortal beings encountered way earlier in life.

And this brings us to the present day! Where only time will tell what happens next...

although  there  were  no  visible  cues  indicating  anything  being  off,  adhelina  noted  the  silence  that’d  fallen  between  them  following  their  introductions.  it  wasn’t  a  fairly  long  silence,  but  one  that’d  lasted  just  a  beat  too  long,  enough  to  cause  a  slight  furrow  of  her  brows.  adhelina  was  never  one  to  judge  another  based  off  of  first  introductions,  and  if  her  acquaintanceship  with  leighton  rainford  was  anything  to  go  by,  the  slightest  thing  would  pique  her  interest.  a  people  person  through  and  through,  addie  always  believed  the  best  in  others  and  always  found  herself  wanting  to  dig  deeper  to  figure  them  out.

a  little  laugh,  and  she  nodded  in  acceptance  of  his  gentlemanly  offer  of  ladies  first  to  allow  her  the  opportunity  to  break.  “thank  you  kindly,”  she  said,  a  smile  playing  at  her  lips  as  she  maneuvered  to  one  end  of  the  table  to  start  out  their  game.

“so  what  brings  you  to  ashwick?  forgive  me  for  just..  assuming  that  you’re  new  to  the  area,”  adhelina  began,  gaze  wandering  to  him  before  she  returned  to  setting  up  her  shot.  “it’s  sort  of  a  small  town,  so  it’s  not  hard  to  recognize  an  outsider  when  you  see  one.  have  you  been  here  long?”

kendall gave a small smile as he replied, “no thanks necessary.” he carefully watched as adhelina worked on setting up on her shot while he continued doing his best to hold his tongue. the question remained on the tip of it as his heart and head still argued on what the best course of action would be. he nearly lost his focus on both their current conversation and the game before her voice caught his attention once again.

he shifted to pick up his glass of water for another quick sip, his mouth having gone dry during the ongoing internal conflict. kendall shook his head as he set it back down and took a breath, hoping to come off as casually planning his own move for the game. “no, not terribly long,” he started his answer in the same cordial tone while his brows briefly furrowed, recalling how long it had been since he’d arrived. “been here a couple of weeks. still getting my bearings and all.”

“as for what brings me here, it’s a bit of a long story.” kendall is cautious with his word choice as he speaks, doing the best that he can to resist temptation. the last thing that he wants to do is lie yet taking the leap of faith with unleashing his inquiry still strikes him as something equally daunting. while he returned to the table, he continued, “i’ve traveled pretty much my entire life. and it has been a great opportunity because i’ve learned so much, made great memories along the way. but i wanted to take a little breather, if that makes any sense?”

while he enjoys his fair share of fun, rome doesn’t usually prefer to be in big crowds — or to be very social at all, if he’s honest — but there’s something about kendall that has always pulled him out of his shell, bringing a sense of comfort that makes him feel at home anywhere, as long as ken was near. kendall’s energy is infectious, spreading and filling the cavity of rome’s chest and causing him to have to take a sip from his drink to cover the wide grin that threatens to spread across his lips, reveling in the burn of the alcohol as it slides down his throat. “ah, my mistake, i forgot that mayhem is where you thrive,” he quips, tipping his head to the side as one of his eyebrows quirks up, a teasing smirk forming on his lips. “hey now, don’t tempt me. if i didn’t know you so well, i would think you were serious and end up gatekeeping you. luckily for you, i know you all too well, and i know that you would go crazy without some external stimulation for that long.” he shakes his head as he releases a soft chuckle, hitching his shoulder up in a casual shrug as he continues, “guess i’ll have to take a raincheck on hoarding all of your attention. woe is me.”

kendall laughs at rome’s response, fondly shaking his head at his best friend. their banter is a familiar practice for the two of them and one that he will never tire of. nor could he imagine himself ever growing tired of rome’s presence. he is forever welcome, always loved, one of kendall’s favorite people to be around and live with. growing up with such a nomadic family and continuing that practice in his life as a vampire means that home has rarely ever been associated with places. if home is where the heart is then it is with the people that kendall loves. the feeling of safety and security that comes with being around them always wraps around him, not unlike a warm blanket. as much he loves moving on to the next big adventures, taking both the road most traveled by as well as venturing off the beaten paths to find hidden gems, he greatly enjoys the quieter moments as well. he’s simply happy to spend time with his loved ones, anywhere and at any time. “according to the modern slang, people will think i have strong chaotic energy,” he replies with another laugh before taking a drink. kendall’s grin softens into an affectionate smile as he looks back at rome. “we can cash in that raincheck anytime you like.”

“adhelina  cullen,”  she  said,  hand  meeting  his  between  them,  “but  you  can  call  me  addie,  everyone  does.”  and  the  vampire  wasn’t  quite  sure  why,  not  quite  familiar  with  the  feeling,  but  she  felt  the  slightest  bit  nervous.  she  chalked  it  up  to  the  unanticipated  remembrance  of  the  lover  she  once  had,  back  when  she  was  a  human  and  her  worst  sin  had  been  their  illicit  relationship.  one  of  the  many  loves  of  her  life,  including  ardemis  and  most  importantly,  her  current  spouse.  just  like  years  before  when  she  and  ardemis  had  run  into  each  other  in  town,  life  had  a  way  of  striking  when  you  least  expected  it.

with  a  glance  towards  the  pool  table,  the  billiard  balls  in  their  signature  triangular  shape  from  her  earlier  preparation,  adhelina  glanced  back  to  kendall  once  she’d  swiped  the  cue  ball.

“shall  i  break,  or  would  you  like  to  do  the  honors?”  she  held  the  cue  ball  out  towards  him,  playful  grin  brightening  her  features.

adhelina. she shared a name with his mother. or perhaps ... could she be his mother? the smile on kendall’s face firmly remained in place, but a wave of nerves and anxiety washed over him. the question sat on the tip of his tongue as the introductions continued then remained stuck there when silence fell between them. kendall’s curiosity was piqued, at an all time high in fact. he wanted to know and hear the answer for himself, whatever it may be. however, there was no way of wording the inquiry that didn’t sound unbelievably forward. not to mention the venue. a public space hardly seemed like the best place to ask or answer such a query. another concern - albeit one on the smaller side - was what if he was wrong? even though the embarrassment would eventually fade, it would be absolutely be enough to keep him from showing his face around valley steakhouse for awhile. 

her question snapped kendall out of his thoughts and he couldn’t help but match the lively smile on adhelina’s face. “ladies first,” he answered, proud that his curiosity hadn’t sent the question rushing out at the first opportunity. he could do his best to focus on the game and wait a little longer.

a reluctant grin spreads across roman’s lips as his eyes land on kendall’s form across the bar, relief already settling into his bones from the familiarity. it’s a busy night at the establishment, still relatively early but already packed with bodies, causing rome to have to maneuver his way through people to get to where kendall is standing, balancing the two drinks already in his hand. “there you are, thought i’d lost you for a minute there,” he greets with a smile when he’s within hearing distance of his best friend, offering one of the drinks out to him with a nod towards it. “you know, we could’ve just stayed home with a bottle of this stuff,” he teases. “we could’ve gotten drunk and avoided all the mayhem.”

kendall accepts the drink from rome with a grateful smile as he chuckles at his best friend’s quips. he nods in agreement while taking a quick sip. then he leans in and playfully answers, “but where’s the fun in that?” goodness knows that he is a textbook extrovert, but even they have periods where they are content with the company of a trusted few. plus, he’s all too happy to say something nonsensical if it sets up another round of endless snark and jokes between them. nights spent entertaining crowds as well as making new friends are well and good, but exchanging wits with roman can easily upgrade it to a great one. he continues, “next time though, let’s definitely stay home. all of this energy alone will be enough to charge my social battery for months.”

in  waiting  for  her  spouse  to  arrive  for  their  planned  dinner  out  on  the  town,  adhelina  sucked  in  a  breath  at  the  sight  of  what  couldn’t  possibly  be  a  familiar  face,  not  when  she  knew  that  the  glimpse  of  that  face  she  thought  she’d  seen  was  long  gone.  her  past  lover,  before  she  ever  turned  more  than  nine  hundred  years  prior,  was  someone  she  knew  to  be  deceased.  although  this  stranger  adorned  similar  looks  to  his,  addie  was  quick  to  chastise  herself  with  the  fact  that  there  was  no  use  lingering  on  such  thoughts  when  so  much  time  had  passed.

but  curiosity  led  her  to  spark  up  conversation,  thankful  that  he  just  so  happened  to  be  the  closest  person  in  the  vicinity  in  that  it  wouldn’t  seem  odd,  like  she’d  cherry  picked  him  from  the  crowd,  instead  of  the  convenience  of  him  being  nearest  to  her.

“looks  like  my  partner  hasn’t  shown  up,  if  you’d  like  to  join  me?”  and  adhelina  outstretched  her  arm  to  offer  the  pool  stick  in  her  grip,  curious  to  see  if  her  offer  would  be  accepted.  ashwick  was  full  of  kind  people,  but  there  were  also  many  who  didn’t  take  kindly  to  strangers  striking  up  conversation.  time  would  only  tell  what  his  response  would  be.

as was tradition in every new place he lived, kendall had been checking out various businesses to see if they were hiring and to possibly pick up an application. an immediate point in valley steakhouse’s favor? they had a pool table. billiards had become one of his favorite games to play and watch in order to pass the time. he had been watching a couple of previous rounds while nursing a glass of water, waiting to see about asking if there were any positions available.

then someone nearby grabbed his attention just as he glancing back over. he gave the woman a warm smile as she invited him to join her and he slid off the stool that he had perched himself on. kendall moved to accept the offered pool stick as his smile morphed into a bright grin, always excited about the opportunity to play a favorite game and give himself a break from the more stressful thoughts on his mind.

“it would be an honor,” kendall replied with a nod. he held his other hand out for a friendly shake as he continued, “it’s a pleasure to meet you. i’m kendall rosenthal.”
