Mhairi’s mercurial on her best days, and so forming opinions on people generally happens in a flash. Her opinions on the crew on the whole was having finally found her people, even if it seemed like most of them were low-key annoyed with her right off the bat. In depth opinions below the cut.
Anna: Mhairi was immediately enamored with Anna, even though she was many years her junior she could see clearly how the woman commanded attention. It was a crush at first sight (as it was with most of the remus crew) but she could tell right away that she would be the bane of Anna’s existence. It all started with her introduction in which she’d smiled too much and gotten too grabby with Anna’s hand and she could see the expression on Anna’s face turn calculating and try to figure out how to deal with her personality. Mhairi still believes fully in Anna’s ability to lead them to a new future on Remus.
Anthony: Anthony was handsome and intelligent, and a bit introverted which made Mhairi want to befriend him more. She could tell almost immediately that he’d be driven crazy by her habits, especially since they’d be forced to share close proximity a lot both in training and on Remus when they landed, but she tried desperately to befriend him nonetheless. The crush on him was quick and burned bright, but she could tell there was something else going on in his mind and never pushed it. Tony might be the one person in the crew that Mhairi felt would always be annoyed by her but very rarely let it show as anything persona; Tony’s exasperated by everyone, after all.
Sienna: Beautiful and kind, Sienna meant that Mhairi had someone to go to talk to, if she could ever muster the courage to ask. Sienna was not only smart as a whip but able to keep up with most people’s sense of humour, from the dour to the silly, and it made Mhairi quite enamored with her quite quickly. Though Mhairi avoided her a lot in the beginning, worried Sienna might think of it as Mhairi just wanting constant counseling, she’s grown closer to the woman (and also started to accept her counseling) as time went on. The truth of the matter is, Sienna is the woman Mhairi wishes she could be. Open, but not off-putting and friendly to everyone regardless of their circumstance.
Julian: Somewhat of an enigma for Mhairi, Julian was both handsome and charming, but had this underlying air of ‘fuck you and fuck what you stand for’ that made Mhairi love him even more. He didn’t really put on airs, and though she deeply believes he’s hiding underlying trauma beneath his devil-may-care attitude, she doesn’t, in any way, want to see him change. He’s exactly the type of person you want on your side at the end of the day, because as much as he may play the nonchalant, ‘I don’t give a fuck’ type of man, if someone comes at you he will be there first to puff up his chest and slam them back into place.
Hal: Mhairi took to Hal like fish to water, finding him attractive enough to hold her attention for long periods of staring (an awkwardness she’ll never outgrow) and also intelligent enough to hold a conversation. She often found herself sidling up to him during meal-times, especially early on, trying to find a way to befriend him and become somewhat closer to him before they’d make their landing. They formed a friendship that is both symbiotic and codependent, and while those words often strike fear into the hearts of professionals, it works in the setting they’re in. Hal’s always there to lift Mhairi up (sometimes literally) and she’s always there to make sure he keeps dreaming big.
Savannah: Mhairi was not only intimidated by Savannah, but absolutely in strong like with her. A strong woman who wasn’t afraid to speak her mind, and fully aware that the two of them would have to work together a lot to make sure that things went smoothly, Mhairi tried to befriend her. She was too cool for Mhairi, at least in Mhairi’s eyes, and so somehow she always felt somehow like Savannah was the older sister she was trying to emulate and failing entirely at being. She still holds out hope that she’ll be able to form a stronger relationship with her, but knows that her personality is somewhat grating.
Nico: Oh Nico, Mhairi loved Nico from the start, because despite his towering intelligence (he made her feel stupid by comparison, though doubtfully on purpose) he still managed to have a quick wit and sparkling sense of humour. She, in no way, MEANT to steal his candy, but after it was done there was a sense of urgency to make sure she wasn’t hiding it. She wanted Nico to know how important it was that she had that little piece of him, and though she knows she annoys him (and did quite often while they were still orbiting and traveling) she also knows that they’re friends, however candy-floss thin that might be at times.
Heath: Heath exists in Mhairi’s mind as this impossibly hard to find specimen; a flower that only grows in the harshest conditions but provides light and warmth to everything around it. He’s kind when he doesn’t necessarily have to be, and charming without even having to try. He is the personification of a field of flowers in bloom, surprising and unassuming, but always wonderful and beautiful to experience. As much as Mhairi tries to keep her head on straight, especially of late, she gets a bit tongue-tied and ridiculous around Heath and feels she might just annoy him too much.
Ines: It was rocky at first for them and Mhairi, as Mhairi is a bit too much for someone like Ines who spends most of their time trying desperately to both feel and not feel the things around them. They were beautiful and unique, and Mhairi latched onto them as quickly as possible, but still feels as if perhaps she and they are not exactly on the best of terms. She gets that they’re trying with her, and it’s so appreciated that they always have. She wants nothing more than to bring Ines out of their shell and let them feel something, as she gets the feeling they haven’t done that in a long time. Mhairi is extremely and highly protective of Ines to the point of ridiculousness and likely to chagrin of Ines themselves.
Nikolai: Though it’s hard to think of Nikolai now, Mhairi loved Nik from the start. Everything about him bespoke a deep love and understanding of emotions and the things happening around him. When the ship was named after his late wife, Mhairi made a noise not unlike a squealing pig, and felt wholly embarrassed by it, but Nik gave her a kind smile and all that faded. He was a light within their crew that made everyone feel sort of like there was hope for you, even after everything had gone away. You could love hard, and love forever, and not let yourself be crushed beneath that weight; Nik did, so why not you? Even though she felt annoying, he never once made her feel that way, and that was so rare.
Abe: Like the brother she never had, Abe exists in Mhairi’s mind in a special place. When they first met, they took to each other rather quickly, and Abe was one of the only people Mhairi didn’t feel like she was constantly annoying with her ramblings about meteorology and all it entails. In kind, she also loved hearing Abe talk about his passions, from his work to his love for fiction and other things. He was one of the easiest people for Mhairi to befriend, and in fact, to talk to, and he makes her feel almost as peaceful as she did when she was still with her father in their own little world. He’s handsome and kind and intelligent, like everyone on the Remus crew, but also always tries to make people feel okay about themselves, even when he’s being a sarcastic butthead.
Ellis: There was something about Ellis, and Mhairi has struggled to come to terms with it from the jump. She crushes on everyone, her emotional stability being a bit wonky, but with Ellis, the way he’d smile at her and talk to her made her feel things differently. She tries to be a better person around Ellis because he’s already a stellar example of a human being. The crush she formed on Ellis was deeper than she’d anticipated and she’s still struggling with it. Warm and inviting, and with a past that’s got depths she hasn’t begun to plumb, she feels like Ellis is both a dark horse in her life as well as the light that makes it easier to get out of bed in the morning. First impressions are everything, and Ellis’ lasted through all their time together prior to landing; she might love Ellis.
Jacob: Handsome, charming, and kind -- these are all facets that everyone on the crew seems to exhibit -- but with Jacob it’s extrapolated out onto everyone else. He is all those things personified, but also manages to make all the people around him feel much the same. A mirror to shine light off of that also is burgeoning with its own light from within. She felt he was a bit withdrawn at first and tried to bribe him into opening up with stolen candy and smiles, really hoping to make him feel more at home within the crew, and since then she’s found herself wiggling more into his good graces as time goes on (not that he has bad graces, but that’s beside the point.)
