Shezad Dawood with Mukul Deora - The Body Electric, 2008
“The Body Electric presents itself as a YouTube-styled pop video but it is equally a proto-totalitarian spandex anthem to the New India.”
Coco Fusco - Operation Atropos, 2006
I love this piece because it uses documentary to bring you inside of a simulated interrogation situation and at the same time turns a critical eye toward the larger patriarchal dynamics of war.
Melik Ohanian - DAYS, I See what I Saw and what I will See, 2011
A two channel installation with day on one side and night on the other with a continuously tracking shot on visible rails shot over eleven days. Shot in worker camps in the United Arab Emirates. Beautiful and political all at once.
Miguel Angel Rojas - Caqueta, 2007
A young man wearing camouflage paint leans over a basin of water and slowly removes the paint with his amputated forearms. This piece specifically refers to the struggle against the manufacture and distribution of cocaine in Colombia with the coca leaves in the background but could easily be viewed as a universal meditation on the horrors of war.
Benny Nemerofsky Ramsay - I am a Boyband, 2002
A one man boyband singing a lovely pop rendition of Elizabethan music. Very catchy. http://www.nemerofsky.ca/i-am-a-boyband
Maxi Cohen - Second Grade Dreams, 1983
Children telling dreams such as being chased by giant candy bars yelling “eat me!” or seeing a friend drink his own blood from a bathtub. Interesting that the children are sharing their dreams in front of an audience of classmates, you can tell they’re trying to entertain and each ends up like a sort of case study in approaches to entertainment using humor, violence, fantastical imagery, etc.
