Meanwhile.. when it's your birthday in India -- Happy Birthday Dono!

We had a little trouble with every bus on our weekend trip, but nothing compared to our situation that developed when trying to leave Bangalore. At one point I think we all thought we were going to be spending an extra night in Bangalore, but thankfully at the last moment we found an alternate bus stop. Here are few reactions:

We hired a driver to take us to different spots in Bangalore Sunday and Monday. Many people at work had mentioned to us that there wasn’t much in Bangalore because it was just a “big IT city with lots of traffic”. We were optimistic though and excited to see it regardless. Being the third largest city in India with over 8 billion people, we’d heard of Bangalore before coming to India. People had said Bangalore had a lot of influence of globalization and we were excited to eat different types of food, have a change of pace, etc.

A few people had suggested various activities and places to eat in Bangalore, so that was helpful. We met up a few times with Christian, a friend we’d gotten to know from Manipal. Before we left on Monday night, we ended up with a few extra hours before our bus was supposed to leave, so we entertained ourselves at a nearby mall and went to our first real “grocery store” in India.

Bangalore was fun - I think it would be more fun if you knew a lot of people who lived there. The main thing we saw to do in Bangalore was to shop and go out to eat. We definitely saw what everyone meant by it being an IT hub (we even went to an IT park.. something we’d never heard of before). The city was pretty globalized - there were a ton of non indian restaurants - I actually don’t we ate one typical Indian meal while in Bangalore. There were lots of US chains there .. they had your typical fast food restaurants like KFC and McDonald’s, but they also had chains like Starbucks, Krispy Kreme & even Pinkberry. We didn’t have a currency exchange advantage like we do in Manipal. In Bangalore everything cost a lot for Indian standards, and so after converting the prices, they were very similar to US prices. As Donovan said, “well I just spend a 1,000 bucks on dinner, so maybe I shouldn’t” (aka 1,000 rupees - aka $16.60.. but still). Pramod said this is because once you get to a certain level in a company, your salary will be equivalent to a smilier job in the US. I think this is because there are so many international companies in Bangalore; they want to keep everything consistent .. to grow, or maybe incase people switch job location. All in all, it was an interesting city to see and I’m glad we got to go.
