Good medical practice (Australia)
The patients' wellbeing must be the physician's first concern; everything else comes later. (duty)
They have the duty to speak out against discrimination in workplace - and in that, they must acknowledge the ongoing impacts of colonisation, systemic, and individual racism that Indigenous people experience in the present (duty)
They must be aware that there are power discrepancies between the doctor and the patient - and hence, it is essential that they must establish and foster a relationship of trust, in order to help people as best as they can, and so that they feel comfortable speaking to the doctors (self-awareness)
When there are potential conflicts of interest, they must let the patient know, and make arrangements to refer the patient to someone else. All patients have the right to complain and seek advice from another medical professional (self-awareness)
They must seek help when suffering from stress, depression, anxiety, and burnout - anything that can impact their practice. This also applies to other teammates (self-awareness)
The doctors have the obligation to report the authority when they notice the risks to patient safety. This includes physical and mental impairment, intoxication while practising, significant departure from accepted professional standards, and sexual misconduct (duty)
Note that public comments and actions outside work reflects your role as a doctor and the reputation of the profession (self-awareness)
The relationship between the patient and the doctor is akin to collaborative teamwork; you must actively listen to the patients and respect their views on health, keeping in mind potential differences in beliefs due to culture. There must be an open, honest communication if something goes wrong (in accordance to disclosure policies), and everything should be documented and reviewed to ensure that a similar incident does not occur again. One must also clearly and effectively communicate with the patient and their teammates (teamwork, self-awareness, communication, duty)
In saying that, cultural competency is essential in delivering effective care to the patients.
