4 AM and I'm in love
Yesterday I had this thing called a musical diploma concert (fin. musiikkidiplomikonsertti). It’s a way to show your musicality in Finnish high school and maybe get some extra points for the university application (depending where you apply into). You have to organize a concert and sing or play an instrument there to show what you can do. You yourself have to get the members for the band, people to control the lights and sound and everything, build the stage and reserve the space. It’s a very big thing, and you can’t succeed if you aren’t willing to work for it.
I did that concert with my friend, who sang (it was half my half her concert) and four other friend who played at the band. I also myself sang and played piano, the only instrument I know how to. I’ve been very anxious about playing in front of anyone - I can’t freely play even with my teacher with whom I’ve been playing for 8 years now. I only love to play in my own room alone.
This time, I had to face my fears and play the piano in not only one but four songs, and in two of them I sang at the same time. I’ve never been so proud of myself, when I got through every song, even tho I did many mistakes. I’ve never been able to control my fears so much. Everyone asked me if I was nervous and I replied “Yes, but I’m not allowed to think about it”, laughed and smiled. People say that I looked so confident on the stage, and I can’t understand how did they not notice my hands shaking over the piano and my legs trembling as I sang.
The point is, you’ll never get any better if you won’t go out of your comfort zone. And usually - no, always - the fears and bogeymen are bigger in your mind than what they really are. All you need is faith and belief in your very own self.
