“It’s just a bit repetitive but my mother insisted that my sister and I learn about Disney history so perhaps that’s why I feel that way.”

“I guess that makes sense. My dad never really stressed learning anything we weren’t already interested in. It was fun growing up, but now I wish I knew a bit more about chemistry and stuff.“

“It’s just basic Disney history. It’s nothing too difficult or anything, it’s just a bit boring.” she admitted. “I feel like I already know all of the information so it’s just a repeat.”

“I haven’t taken that yet. It sounds kinda cool, though.”

“A ton of history. I’ve been putting off the work I have for that class to be honest.”

“What history are you taking? I’m pretty good at remembering dates and names and stuff like that so history is a good subject for me.”

“I’d love to be your study buddy. Maybe we’ll actually get work done.”

“I hope so. I’ve got like a boat load of chemistry homework to do. How about you?”

“Would you like me to leave?”

“No. I’d love to have a study buddy, if you’re up for it. Studying alone isn’t as fun.”

“You don’t sound all that confident.”

“No, that’s not it. I guess I just figured you’d leave once I gave you my notes, but I can totally read my writing. Promise.”

“I should be able to understand them! You can always translate though, right?”

"Yeah, uh- yep.I could totally do that.”

Birdie nodded enthusiastically, the idea sounding all too perfect. “That sounds great. Water’s probably too cold to swim, huh? I’d kill to just be by the water if not in it,” Bridge commented. “I just have to grab a hoodie or something if you don’t mind,” she hadn’t had time to unpack yet, but luckily, her sweatshirts were at the top of her bag. That had been the plus side to shopping during their layover; the plus side other than buying all new clothes to fit in with the other school kids.

“I don’t mind at all. We’ll need to stop at one of our rooms anyway if we want towels to lay on the beach.” She nodded towards the dorms, waiting to follow Bidie’s lead. “It’s a little cold out still, but we could also stop by the pool if you want to swim. Not the same thing, but it is heated.” Megan offered the idea without hesitation. She was always quick to give people lots of options, never wanting to be the person to choose, but liking to add to the decision.

Bridge grinned, crossing her arms and nodding. “That’s cool! Small world,” she replied, looking the girl over. Despite their greeting, she thought they might become good friends. “I love the water; I grew up on a ship, so the fact that I’m not surrounded by water is giving me a little anxiety, to be honest,” she chuckled nervously, suddenly painfully aware that she couldn’t see the sea or any body of water anywhere.

Megan grinned wider, glad a nearly perfect opportunity had presented itself. It was clear Bridget missed the water and while the lake wasn’t the same, it was better than nothing. “I was just there, but if you want we could grab some fresh towels and head there now.” She nodded her had back towards the dorms, “Plus, it’ll be the perfect place for you to tell me what growing up on a ship was like. I imagine it has to be so much cooler than just a weekend cruise.”

Bridge brightened at the girl’s answer. “Oh, I have been there! It’s the only part of California that I’ve seen, so I’d have to agree with you there,” she smiled, shoving her hands into her jacket pockets. “My dad took me there one summer; I learned how to surf at the Half Moon Bay,” Birdie giggled, remembering the look on her father’s face when she told him she wanted to learn. Why do you need to do something like that? You’re going to get yourself hurt. Okay, okay, how much?

Noticing Birdie’s change in demeanor Megan smiled brightly. “You leaned how to surf there? That’s crazy! I use to go there with my friends all the time.” She was so glad their interaction was turning around so easily. In Megan’s mind that was more than enough of a sign that they were going to be fast friends. “It’s not the same at all, but there’s a lake here with a nice sandy shore. There aren’t any waves, but if you like the water I’d love to take you there some time.”

Bridge considered it, and shrugged, hopping down from the wall and sticking the butt into her back pocket. She hoped it would be a small credit to her character in the girl’s eyes that she didn’t toss it in the garden. “I’m Birdie,” she answered, offering a small smile. “Neverland. You?” She’d spent most of her life traveling around from place to place, but the island was home base. Her father always returned to the island, always with some new scheme that was sure to work, only to have it backfire and end with Peter and his goonies pointing and laughing from the sky. The Jolly Roger was her home, but she knew enough to not say that; people never said ‘I’m from my house’ and actually made friends.

Megan had to stop herself from just repeating back back the other girl’s answer and asking if she was serious. She’d learned enough to know places like that actually existed, but that didn’t mean it didn’t feel like meeting someone out of a fantasy novel. “San Francisco. Have you ever been? It’s the absolute best part of California.” In her mind it was probably the best place in the whole world and while she would do her best not to talk Birdie’s ear off, she could go on about her home town forever.

Bridge was a little disappointed to have the first person she met call her out, and wondered for a moment if the girl was a narc. She cocked a brow and took one more drag before putting it out. “First day here after being taken away from my home, family, and entire life. Figured they’d give me a pass,” she retorted, blowing the smoke out the corner of her mouth, not wanting to send it directly down to the girl’s face. Even though she was slightly irked by the girl’s words, she figured it was better to try and not start trouble right off the bat. 

Stifling a cough caused by a tickle in her throat, she shrugged. “I wouldn’t think so. I’ve heard they’re pretty strict on stuff like that here.” Not that she had any real idea. Megan was a goody two shoes and she did nothing to hide that, which meant almost anyone that knew her knew better than to talk about drugs when she was around. “Anyway, I’m Megan. Where are you from?” She liked making friends and being one of the first friends this new girl had was too good of an opportunity to pass up on- even if she didn’t seem to care for what Megan considered to be pretty important rules.

Bridget stood outside of Briar dormitory, squinting against the blaring sunlight that peeked over the building. She’d just been dropped off with her brother, Blake, and after he’d dropped her off in her room and left her to unpack, she found herself at a loss of what to do. She pulled a cigarette from her pocket and lit up, toeing a bit of grass growing between the cracks in the sidewalk. Being Hook’s daughter, Bridget, or Birdie as those on board the Jolly Roger had called her, had grown to believe herself immune to the law, and that her father would never let anything happen to her. And yet, a month after she’d received the order to attend Elias, she’d been shipped off to the States with a small bag and a printout of her classes. Bridge wandered down the path and hopped up onto a stone wall, letting her combat boots bang against the wall as her legs dangled, and she watched the students that passed with interest.

Megan was heading back to her dorm after a swim, still slightly damp with her hair wrapped up in a purple towel atop her head. She’d needed a less structured activity to unwind from a busy week of non-stop dance rehearsals, violin lessons, and homework. Finally relaxed and a little distracted by a song running through her head, she might have completely missed the girl sitting on the wall if she hadn’t walked through a cloud of her smoke. Stopping to cough, Megan turned to the girl. For a moment she was too stunned to say anything, never expecting anyone would be so bold as to openly smoke in what was usually a busy thoroughfare for foot traffic. “You are aware you could get in a lot of trouble for that, right” Megan inquired, trying not to seem rude as she took a step back.

“Did you manage to get down the notes from the last slide in class? She went so quickly that I missed most of it!”

“Yeah, I did. I’m a pretty quick note-taker. If you can make sense of the scribbles I call words it should all be there.”

Chander simply shrugged in response. “You look like you need a friend and I’m happy to be one.” he replied with a smile. “Everyone makes mistakes. You didn’t mean to burn your food and set the fire alarm off. Anyone who can’t forgive you for a mistake that didn’t cause any real damage or hurt anyone is a jerk.”

Megan nodded, agreeing that she hadn’t meant for any of that to happen, as she swallowed hard to get rid of the lump starting to form in her throat. “Thanks.” She managed a small smile, thinking that if she tried for anything more it wouldn’t seem genuine. “My name is Megan, by the way, Megan Miller.”

“Hmmmm” Chander frowned as he tried to cheer the girl up. “What if you just cook with me?” He asked offering her a smile. “I still have access to a kitchen and I’ll keep an eye on you so that nothing goes wrong. I’m no chef but i can keep an eye on things so we don’t risk any fires.”

The undeserved kindness she was being shown had her almost dry eyes watering again. “Why would you do that for me? Why are you being so nice?” It wasn’t unlike her to be giving and compassionate with people even if she didn’t know them, but she wasn’t use to people treating her the same way. “You’d really do that for me when you don’t even know my name?” they hadn’t exchanged names, she had likely forced him out of bed with the fire alarm and yet he was treating her like a friend.
