Cheetah haunts an adult impala. An exciting story about a spectacular cheetah kill during our very last game drive on the day we would leave Entim Camp.
A Cheetah female was about to walk towards a bush. Her three cubs walked behind her at a suitable distance. You could tell from the way she moved that she had sight of a prey. In the bush a mature impala goat was grazing quietly. Had she seen only her or was there also a calf with her? Together with our two Entim cars, five other Toyota Land Cruisers followed the activities of the cheetah. As usual, the cars try to choose a position as quickly as possible, preferably behind the prey. Because our team took some more time to photograph the creeping cheetah, we were the last in line to get a good spot. Fortunately Entim Camp has very experienced drivers. Often they photograph themselves and therefore know from which position you have the best chance of a nice shot. This time Johnmark and Joseph proved their qualities again. Even though we were lucky that we came as last on the spot. While the other Toyota’s parked at the front and side of the grove, we positioned ourselves at the opposite in at the rear and that was exactly where it would all happen.
Because we were behind the bush we could not follow the progress of the hunt. It was therefore especially paying attention to the direction of the cameras on the other cars. Sudden excitement in the other cars indicated that something was about to happen. The Impala ran from the bush towards the cars that were parked on the side of the bush. For us that was exactly the wrong side. In the other direction, away from us and straight against the bright morning light.
However, no chasing cheetah could be seen. Was there still a calf in the bush and had we misjudged it? What happened next could not be thought of beforehand. The female Impala suddenly turned around and ran back the same bush from where it just appeared! Maybe draft to protect her calf! There was a silence, that lasted only a few seconds and then the Impala literally blasted out of the bush with the cheetah female at her tale. Straight to us. A scream in the car followed by a rattling Sony a9, who recorded the event with 20 images per second, pulled me out of my trance. Oh yes, make pictures!! Whe I pressed the shutter my Nikon D810 did something but he would not win this photo shoot from the Sony. With only 5 images per second, the camera wrote off the rancid fast sequential situations in large RAW images. The kill that came to an impasse at about 30 meters ahead of our land cruiser was over in less than a minute.
The cheetah underwent the moment of discharge while she bit the neck of the impala goat. With us in the car, the de charge was at least as intense but lucky not so deadly. What had we experienced, seen and possibly recorded with the cameras? I show some of my own pictures below and I hope that my traveling companions will share there’s from their different positions and photographic skills. We couldn’t have imagined a nicer ending of our photo trip to the Masaai Mara in the heart of Africa.

Cheetah achtervolgt een adulte impala. Een spannend verhaal over een spectaculaire cheetahkill tijdens onze allerlaatste game drive op de dag dat we uit Entim Camp zouden vertrekken.
Een Cheetah vrouwtje maakte aanstalten om richting een bosje te lopen. Haar drie jongen liepen op gepaste afstand achter haar aan. Aan de manier van lopen kon je zien dat ze een potentiele prooi op het oog had. In het bosje stond een volwassen impalageit rustig te grazen. Had ze haar gezien of stond er ook een kalf bij? Samen met onze twee Entim auto's volgenden er nog een vijftal andere Toyota Landcruisers de activiteiten van het jachtluipaard. Zoals gebruikelijk proberen de auto's bij een aanstaande kill zo snel mogelijk positie te kiezen, liefst achter de prooi. Omdat ons team wat meer tijd nam om de sluipende jachtluipaard te fotograferen, waren we de laatste in de rij om een goed plekje te bemachtigen. Gelukkig heeft Entim Camp zeer ervaren chauffeurs in dienst. Vaak fotograferen ze zelf ook en weten daarom van uit welke positie je de beste kans hebt op een mooie foto. Ook dit keer bewezen zij hun kwaliteiten weer. Al hadden we het gelukt mee dat we als laatste aan kwamen. Terwijl de andere Toyota ‘s aan de voor en zijkant van het bosje parkeerden, positioneerden wij ons aan de achterzijde en dat was precies de plek waar het allemaal zou gaan gebeuren.
Omdat wij achter het bosje stonden konden we de voortgang van de jacht niet volgen. Het was dus vooral letten op de richting van de camera's van de andere auto's. Plotselinge opwinding in de andere auto's gaf aan dat er iets stond te gebeuren. De Impala rende vanuit het bosje richting de auto's die aan de zijkant van het bosje geparkeerd stonden. Voor ons was dat precies de verkeerde richting. Van ons af en tegen het felle ochtendlicht in.
Er was echter geen achtervolgende cheetah te zien. Was er toch een kalf in het bosje en had ze zich daaraan vergrepen? Wat er daarna gebeurde was van te voren niet te bedenken. De impalageit keerde plotseling om en rende vervolgens het zelfde bosje weer in! Misschien toch om haar kalf te beschermen! Er volgde een stilte die slechts enkele tellen duurde en daarna vloog de geit letterlijk het bosje uit met op nog geen staartlengte afstand het cheetah vrouwtje, recht op ons af. Een schreeuw in de auto gevolgd door een ratelende Sony a9, die met 20 beelden per seconden het gebeuren voor ons registreerde, haalde mij uit mijn trance. Oh ja plaatjes maken!!! Mijn Nikon D810 deed wat hij kon maar deze fotoshoot ging hij niet van de Sony winnen. Met nauwelijks 5 beelden per seconde schreef de camera de razend snel opeen volgende situaties in zware RAW beelden weg. De kill die op zo'n 30 meter voor onze Toyota's tot een voor de impala noodlottig einde kwam, was in minder dan een minuut voorbij.
De cheetah onderging het moment van ontlading terwijl ze de hals van de impalageit dicht beet. Bij ons in de auto was die ontlading minstens zo intens maar gelukkig niet zo dodelijk. Wat hadden we meegemaakt, gezien en mogelijk met de camera's vastgelegd? Ik laat daarvan hieronder wat eigen plaatjes zien en hoop dat mijn reisgenoten dat misschien ook nog een keertje vanuit hun positie en fotografische skills met ons gaan delen. Een mooiere afsluiting van onze fotoreis naar de Masai Mara in het hartje van Afrika hadden we niet kunnen bedenken.
