Avi laughed at the nickname, happy she got to hear it once more. “I don’t know? Maybe because I broke your freaking arm?” Avi said, but this time she was still laughing, she felt like a weight had been lifted off her chest. “It’s been really quiet in my room too, except for Clyde trying to cheer me up once he got out of the infirmary.” she tells Mei, talking excitedly. She’d not been able to just rant and ramble for a while now, she needed this.

“i’m okaay.” she tried to emphasize, rolling her eyes. “i was gonna try painting again today too, since it doesn’t hurt much anymore.” mei continued, trying her best to reassure her, before turning back to the colors to get the ones she wanted. “that’s really cute. is he okay? i heard he was possessed too.”

“Hmm…” he hummed, scratching his chin. “I mean, I love all holidays, but if you apply that logic… don’t most holidays use that to sell shit? I don’t know.” He clicked, eyes going wide with understanding. “Oh! Are you sad because your boyfriend isn’t here with you? On Valentine’s?” He asked gently. He patted her lightly on the head. “It’s alright, little one. Today, I will take you under my wing,” he announced.

Seongjae grinned when she laughed a little bit, feeling very proud of himself for having cracked her tough demeanour. He held out his hand to shake hers. “A deal, you say?” He pouted a little bit. “But I love saying I told you so! It’s so satisfying.”

“i literally hate you, you’re so hard to explain shit to.” mei groaned, rolling her eyes at him. she scrunched her nose, not really appreciating the pat on her head. “uh, no? he lives right in the city, i just didn’t want to leave camp after the bullshit that happened.” she shrugged. “the hell did i just sign up for...” she muttered to herself.

mei went to shake his hand before remembering that there was a cast still around her arm. “uh... left hand handshake?” she asked sheepishly, offering her left hand instead. “fine, you can say that.”

Seongjae tipped his head to the side thoughtfully. “If you view Valentine’s as a commercial holiday, then don’t you think any holiday is a commercial holiday? There’s nothing wrong with having a specific day to pull all the stops and do something romantic,” he said lightly, “like… an anniversary, almost? Why do you have to celebrate being together at milestone points? Why not everyday?” He shrugged and threw her a wide grin. “I, personally, love Valentine’s. I mean, I’ve never really had one before, but it’s just so nice feeling all of the love charging the air and how happy people look.”

He had a feeling that she was just kidding, from the way she deadpanned the words. It reminded him of TV shows where a person would deliver a line with a completely straight face and stare directly at the camera. He decided to take it as a joke and mirrored her serious expression. “If it’s awesome, I want full compensation in the form of you patting me on the head and going ‘Seongjae, you’re just the best, you’re super awesome, and you have cool pyrotechnic skills.’ With a smile on your face,” he said solemnly, also joking.

“nah, you got that completely wrong.” she sighed, shaking her head. “i have nothing against other holidays, i actually like christmas the most because, well... it’s obviously the best.” she said like it was obvious, totally avoiding the fact that it was the only thing that made her happy dinner her winter depressive phases. “valentine’s is nice, but... i don’t know. everyone uses that to sell shit? girls in japan get overexcited about it because they get to make the boys they like chocolate and give it to them, and i’m not about that life. my boyfriend’s got enough energy as he is.” mei tried to joke with that last part, then shook her head again as if trying to dismiss the whole thing. “i don’t even know what i’m saying, it’s whatever. i’m glad it makes you happy.”

the way he joked, obviously copying the way she talked to him, made it hard for her not to let out a small laugh. “as much as i’d hate to do that, you’ve got yourself a deal. i’m sure they’ll be awesome.” mei answered with a nod. “and if you go ‘i told you so’, i’ll fight you.”

“It’s really funny, yeah.” Kiran agreed, chuckling at his sister’s obliviousness. He was about to continue his ridiculous story, but realisation started to manifest on Mei’s face. Kiran grinned as she looked up and apologised. “It’s okay. I’m sure you’ve got something super important on there. More important than my boring hospital stories anyways. Not that that’s hard.” he joked, teasing her a little. “Is it your boyfriend?” he continued, poking her arm a little. They’d never really talked about her boyfriend but he’d overheard her talk about him with her ginger friend. “Is he sending you dirty messages? He is isn’t he. I’m 100% sure he is.”

mei gave her brother a look, definitely not having been expecting that from him. she never mentioned inseong around him before, simply because she didn’t know how he’d react. “uh, yeah.” she smiled a little, then sighed at what he said next. “he’s stupid, but not that stupid.” she answered, not helping the little laugh she let out. mei really didn’t think kiran would start to tease her like that, it wasn’t like him at all from what she had seen so far. “he just lost his cat in the residence halls... again, that’s all.”

Avi was taken by surprise when Mei raised her voice. It was quite uncharacteristic of her to do so, Avi was used to being the loud one out of the two of them. Though she was usually loud because she was happy, not because she was mad. All Avi did was stand there and let Mei yell at her, looking at her best friend with wide eyes. She slowly nodded when she told her that this was what the Eidolons wanted. Avi knew that, of course she did, she wasn’t stupid, but she still felt bad. However, as Mei waved her arm around, looking a bit silly, a tiny smile creeped onto her face. The smile only grew as Mei invited her for a hug. Of course Avi couldn’t resist the offer of a hug. “Yes, yes, we are!” she agreed happily, her voice taking on more volume as Mei’s became more quiet again. She wrapped her arms tightly around her best friend, relieved that they finally could go back to normal again. “I’ve missed my best friend. I thought you’d never want to talk to me again.” she sighed dramatically.

mei laughed a little when she was attacked with a hug, her frustrations washing away immediately. “good, i’m- i’m glad.” she hugged avi just as tightly, but had to loosen her hold after a few seconds, not wanting to hurt her arm again with pressure. “you’re such an idiot, you little ginger bread.” mei sighed, the nickname being one she made up a while ago as a pun. “why would i do that? it makes no sense.” she said as she pulled back from the hug to look at her with a little smile. “i missed you too, it’s been really quiet and lonely in my room.”

Adriana could tell when she was being ignored, and Mei didn’t make it particularly hard to know when. “I think I’ll formally declare war against the Ares cabin later from the entirety of the Hades Cabin. I’ll tell them it was all your idea , and that when we win they have to wear bright pink tutus all week.” Of course, she had no intention of doing such a thing- she was just testing to seehow much of what she was saying her sister was actually hearing. 

“huh?” mei suddenly looked up at the mention of a war, barely catching up to what adriana has just said, but getting the gist of it. “i- i don’t think anyone would appreciate that.”

“Aw, c’mon,” Adriana pouted. “I’m not that soft, am I?” She asked, before pausing a mometn and laughing to herself. “No, I definitely am. So what would you prefer? Anti-Valentines day?”

mei gave her a look that disagreed with her words, eyebrows raised like the answer was obvious. “nah, i’m okay with it. i just cringe about the whole thing every time.”

Celina chuckled at the responses that made no sense with what she had been saying. Sure, most people zoned out when she talked about Valentine’s, but it still amused her. “Oh really? I was talking about cleaning up all the decorations, does that really sound like fun to you?”

“wait, what?” mei finally looked up at the other girl. a sheepish smile appeared and she let out a small, nervous laugh. “you know what, i don’t think i really have time to do that.”

“cybele...” she muttered, trying to remember who the goddess was. a look of realization was on mei’s face and she nodded a little. “o-oh, so he’s... not dangerous?”

Kiran had noticed three replies ago that Mei wasn’t listening to his story about all the particularly eventful things that had happened in the infirmary the past few days. He couldn’t blame her, those eventful things weren’t all that eventful after all. He was just bored out of his mind. Even though he’d been recovering steadily, they still wouldn’t let him go. Sure, his leg still gave him trouble, but he could walk again, so it was fine, right?

So now he was just annoying his little sister, except that she found her phone more interesting. “So that’s when I saw this giant badger come in and he danced the macarena while the healers sang backup.” he finally said, making up a bullshit story to simply test how much nonsense he could slip in without Mei noticing.

mei was focussing on something someone sent her, even laughing a little at it instead of what kiran was telling her. “oh, that’s... really funny.” she mumbled in response to what he said.

but then she furrowed her eyebrows and looked at him all of a sudden, his words being bizarre enough to catch her attention. “wait, what?” mei laughed a little and shook her head in embarrassment. “i’m sorry, i wasn’t really listening. i didn’t mean to do that.”

“... good point.” she said after a few seconds of silence, nodding. “oh... wow.” mei looked a bit surprised, but also felt she shouldn’t be. “i mean... he’s not that much of an idiot. he just lost his cat in the residence halls.”
