That night, she does not arrive home with her daddy because she never left with him in the first place. She does not know why. She has stayed up all night staking out an answer.

That night, she does not arrive home with her daddy because she never left with him in the first place. She does not know why. She has stayed up all night staking out an answer.
It’ll be an easy game, he had said. I can win it by myself.
He says nothing now, even several moments after the door lock clicked behind him. He doesn’t even switch on any lights as he makes his way across the floor.
She does not know her daddy to make quiet arrivals. And she cannot return a “welcome home” to complete and utter silence, so she does not. She waits for him to take notice of her.
When he does, he flinches.
She expects to get scolded for still being up, but she finds herself completely unpenalised. He still waves her off to go to bed already, though.
As he does, watching his flapping hand, her attention is brought to something... new, and glinting about his appearance.
When asked, he covers the locket with his hand, almost protectively.
She probes him more, just to give her more time to watch him. Really, she isn’t listening to his almost frantic explanations as to where he got it from, or why he’s wearing a supposedly empty and brand new locket.
His grip loosens as he talks, but he keeps rubbing his thumb over it.
She does not know this to be her daddy’s tell. She swallows hard and supposes that things can change.
Her daddy is stern now in telling her to go to bed. She’s gotten all the information she can get from him, anyway. She quickly obliges this time.
He follows her to the door of her room, and bids her good night.
It doesn’t work, though. She can barely get any sleep.

Needless to say, no one at that agency is going to be pleased to see him, even if it’s because they’ve landed themselves a new client. Hell, it might be better if they turn him away right at the front door without letting him catch even the tiniest glimpse into the office. Then the chances of running into a certain beanie-clad ex-defense attorney would be reduced to zero.
He hasn’t even factored in that he was a huge dick to Justice and Frau Magician the other day. But amidst the chaos of flaming guitars, disappearing corpses, and missed cues, he feels like he reacted accordingly.
