Père Lachaise Tomb of Talma (1977). Helmut Newton (Australian, born Germany, 1920-2004). Chromogenic print.
Newton’s infatuation with the surrealist photography of 1930’s Paris comes to the fore. Drawing on the work of Brassaï, Man Ray and Edward Steichen, all of whom had a preoccupation with the surreal potential of antique public sculpture, Newton creates interesting plays between the animate and inanimate, the living and the dead, at the Parisian graveyard, Père Lachaise.

Crygel ben ick, en van sinnen stuer, dus loop ick met den hooffde tegen den muer.
I am touchy and out of my senses bull-headed, so I bang my head against a brick wall.
