Mastery | My Final Steps
Entertainment Media Publishing and Distribution
For Entertainment Media Publishing and Distribution, I had three goals; 1. Learn what digital publishing and distribution meant, 2. Learn what constitutes digital management and legislation and 3. Learn how to create a publishing and distribution plan for clients.
I would say I learned what digital publishing and distribution meant and what platforms to use. I learned that you must have confidence in your work because the fees that come along with distribution is not cheap. A budget has to be talked about and set. In this course, I decided to focus on writing, publishing and distributing a tv series I have been thinking about for a long time. I chose to use the distribution platform Gumroad because of the many features and analytics it provides. When it comes to digital management and legislation, this may have been a goal for the course, Digital Marketing. Luckily, one of the features of Gumroad is the ability to manage all products that are being distributed through analytics and tracking. Â Gumroad is a great platform that bridges the gap between the two. Even though I did not necessarily learn how to create a publishing and distribution plan, I did learn how to create a query letter and film treatment, in my case, that would help me land a literary agent and hopefully a network. With this class, it became less about my clients and more about my personal goals, which I loved.
As time goes on and I complete the scripts for my tv series, I am equipped with the knowledge on how to move forward. I now know what I need to contact a literary agent and get him involved in my project to get it on a network. If I were to write a book in the future, I now have the tools to do so. This course was a great step towards my future projects and completing them overall. Â
Advanced Law Entertainment
For Advanced Entertainment Law, I had three goals. One was to learn the key points behind entertainment contracts and intellectual property. Two was to learn how to navigate the realm of digital marketing within the degree of Entertainment Law and finally, how to spot an upcoming tend and how it will affect my industry. When I initially came up with these goals, I was just starting my online courses, so I really had no idea what to expect from this course. I did learn about media law and how a simple domain name could cost thousands of dollars if someone is money hungry enough to register it and try to sale it back to the owner. I also learned about intellectual property and the importance of copyrighting and trademarking work that has been creatively thought about and shared with the public. Also, learning about the different types of liabilities that could affect a business was very important. It really helped set the stage to future paths and endeavors and how to go about protecting them. Following up with actual cases in the justice system referring to specific liabilities helped put them in prospective in the real world. After reviewing the cases and seeing how malicious and under handed people can be, I made an extra effort to write down every idea I have, protecting it before it reaches the public. This course helped me think about the steps after my master’s degree, what will I do to protect a business I have invested so much in. What I did not learn, which I may have to learn on my own, is how to spot an upcoming trend. I guess a trend through entertainment law is copyright all of your creatives and have documentation that you thought of an idea or concept first. Protecting yourself no matter what, at the end of the day. Even though I did not learn how to spot specific trends, this course definitely helped me stay aware and research liabilities and other risks before my business falls into the trap.
Product & Artist Management
Product & Artist Management class reconfirmed ideals that I already had working in the media industry. I knew how important it was to know exactly who was my target audience or the audience for my clients, what are their hobbies, psychographics, and demographics. This class really put in perspective how important it is to have all of your ducks in a row, how important reaching people is and the role technology plays in making or breaking a company.
One of my biggest personal takeaways from PAM was the “Finding Your Audience” lecture. I realized that everyone is not your audience. We do not create products or services for everyone. We have to be very specific. This was a major takeaway not for my marketing firm, but for my other businesses. I use my everyday experiences to think of innovative technologies and tools. I specifically use my personal experiences in regards to my daughter and making life easy for a single mother or mothers in general. With my marketing firm, everyone is not my intended audience, but any brand or business can be if they need marketing help. However, in regards to their brand message, I can help narrow down the audience they want to get their message to.
With the help of technology, I now know how I would engage my primary audience. Social media, streaming platforms and high anticipated shows on broadcast television play huge roles. The problem I run into daily with my own clients includes not knowing who their target audience is and what are the tools and ROI’s on doing advertising. I would contour a lifestyle of walking potential clients through an advertising plan similar to their business and let them know, no matter how large or small your business or brand is, if you have a envision for the future, I can help you. My company would be more superior than my competitors because I would explain to my clients all data and analytics that are on their social media and other platforms to keep them engaged and a part of their own journey to greatness.
For my Digital Portfolio timeline, this month I updated social media sites with current pictures. It is important for me to show all of the work that I am currently doing for my clients to pull more in and get my name out to the public. I will continue to use the skills of planning ahead, and the incorporation of technology as I continue to expand my brand and businesses.

Business Storytelling and Brand Development Entry
This course was an eye opener for what it truly means to have a business and successfully tell a story. My original goal for this course was to define what business storytelling was and the proper portrayal of business. While going through each week and building upon Brand Foundations to Brand Storytelling, I learned how to two worked together to build and maintain an authentic personal and business brand. I also learned how to create a storyboard to brand strategy and position statement. Within the course, the Business Model Canvas helped me put my business and personal brand in perspective when next to my competition. Specifically clarifying my value proposition, partners, resources, and so-forth allowed me to see a map of the things needed to grow my business and personal brand. Because I am a visual person, it was easier to see everything that I knew right off hand and had the ability to research the things I did not know off hand. Everything learned in this course, especially creating a personal brand digital portfolio. Sometimes we tend to forget that we, as a person, serves as a walking brand, which invites people to work with us or not. Creating a platform to showcase my skills as of today and more skills as the months and years continue on, was very important to me as a brand and person. Another thing I learned was defining my value proposition and standing out among the other personal brands that stand for Entertainment Business like myself. Even when looking back at the research I had to do on personal brands and businesses, I know that knowledge is power and key to staying ahead of the trends in a specific market. It was important to conduct research on individuals that I admire and want to hopefully work with and build my personal brand off of.
Project and Team Management
My Leadership Style
I think my leadership style is geared more towards Maxwell. I am a creature of habit and want to see every little step and how one step builds onto another. Before I read Developing the Leader Within You 2.0, the only idea I had of what it could be talking about, was how someone developed their leadership style and how the reader could base their life off of the story told. Boy was I wrong! The opening of the book talked about the definition of being a leader through influence. Maxwell states, “People are recognizing that becoming a better leader changes lives”. (Maxwell, 2018, p. 1). That quote stood out to me because, as a young entrepreneur and young person in the marketing and media industry, I thought I was a great leader. I thought, of course, I could improve on my leadership skills, I mean who can’t. However, what I did not realize were the steps that being a leader took. I had no idea that leadership and influence went hand in hand. But after reading the entire chapter, I now conduct my day with trying to influence people whether it is inside the office with other colleagues or outside the office with potential clients. As I continued to read Maxwell’s book, I learned why and how I needed to correct my what I deemed as priorities. By asking myself according to Maxwell, “Who and what will fill my calendar” (Maxwell, 2018, p. 25). Maxwell continues to dig deeper into the definition and steps of becoming the most effective leader possible without hurting or manipulating people or systems. Also, Maxwell gives charts that help gage where I am in my leadership level and how I can improve over time because I want to be a better leader and have successful businesses at the end of my mastery journey. The second most influential chapter I have read was attitude. Maxwell states that “The more we complain. The less we’ll obtain” (Maxwell, 2018, p. 126). I think this is very true; the negativity you think through your mind has a way of manifesting in real life. The more complacent someone is with complaining, the less they do and the less they obtain in general, whether it be friends, followers, or new business overall.
Inspirational Quote that will guide me as I continue on my journey |
“It's a funny thing about life, once you begin to take note of the things you are grateful for, you begin to lose sight of the things that you lack.” ― Germany Kent
My Inspiration
I love my Illustrious Spelman College and this woman gives me so much hope and motivation. As I start my mastery journey, I know that I have women that have been on the same path as I am going down and their futures are so big bright. I know there will be sacrifices in the long run but I say ready, set, go.Â
