i can finally speak my truth and that truth is that the first time i ever watched hb, despite the frenzied, often-deranged flurry of discourse that hovers over everything vivziepop touches, i somehow never once thought that a major point of contention would be that the main couple is irreconcilably problematic. it didn’t even occur to me that this would be like. a moral issue someone might take.

like even setting aside that the initial power imbalance is The defining conflict of their relationship and is understood both by the narrative and the characters to be an obstacle to a desirable romance….. the “toxicity” is like. what’s interesting about them. i’d even say it’s the most interesting thing the show’s got going on. sure they COULD have sat down and resolved every misunderstanding they have in one conversation instead of having a big blow-out argument, behaving insanely for several months, then abruptly moving in together and dancing on a balcony instead of talking about it, but that’s boring!!! it would make for terrible television!!!! is sensible criticism only reserved for things the broader public has already decided is good or can we use our brains here
