Drums were being beaten upon. A gathering of humans in a large paved area next to the sea with a wooden structure in the middle that had rope handing down from the top. They all seemed to be cheering for something as a line of other humans were led out, these ones in tarnished metal chains.
Ryou sat on a rock, watching all of this with a frown. Akefia laid on his stomach next to him, a bored expression on his face as his fingers ran through the water.
Suddenly, once of the guards with a scroll started calling out crime that these people had committed and the punishment for doing such crimes. The cheering only got momentarily louder when the form of punishment was announced.
Then the hanging started.
Akefia looked up, interested as they started killing people. But he frowned when there was no blood. It was an odd way to kill someone. “That’s just a waste. They aren’t even eating them!”
“I thought you liked pirates,” Ryou said, his voice tense.
“I do, but if they’re going to kill them, why not use them as food?”
The merboy sighed, but didn’t answer, going back to watching the execution of the humans. The shark sighed, watching as well, but getting bored with it. Were they not going to do something interesting? He looked back at the water, but that was even more boring!
Suddenly, Ryou started to sing. Akefia looked up, tilting his head. He only ever sang when they were getting food to come closer, and this wasn’t the usual song, either. No, this was a pirate song. After a moment, the pirates on land started to follow the merboy’s example.
He snickered as the guards on land, the ones who were supposed to be making sure that the pirates didn’t do anything as well as making sure that their whole death scheme kept going, stopped and looked around. He grinned at them when they finally found what the pirates had seen the entire time, wiggling his fingers tauntingly at them.
Suddenly, the pirates started rioting. They ran out of the line they had been forced into, running past the guards, or stealing their weapons and killing them. With the help of Ryou, as princy had used the water to help get some of the pirates from the land and back onto their ships, the pirates ran from the land, quickly getting their ships ready to set sail.
Akefia slid back into the water and swam over to one, looking up the side, watching as humans ran back in forth, trying to follow the yelled orders of their captain.
Suddenly, a yell and even more orders came from the land. The shark’s head snapped in that direction to see his pretty one struggling against the human guards, who were dragging him towards land. He growled, hurrying back towards him.
He jumped out of the water when he got close, scarring the humans enough that their grip loosened. Ryou slipped free, and Akefia grabbed one of the guards and dragged him under the water, taking a bite out of his arm.
Ryou was panting nearby as the shark ate the human, who was still struggling and crying out as he ripped his arm off. He offered the severed arm, which only had a few bites missing, to princy.
“No, Akefia. Not right now. We have to make sure that the pirates are going to make it.” He started to swim after the ships, which had finally started sailing away.
The shark pouted, and followed after him with the arm in his mouth, dragging the rest of the drowned human by the other arm. “Mwhy?” He asked around the arm.
Ryou shook his arm, swimming up to the side of one of the ships. A head poked over the side of the ship, smiling a toothy smile at Ryou. Princy jumped up the side of the ship, grabbing the side so that he was closer to the human. Akefia frowned, watching closely, even while he continued eating his human meal. He didn’t like that his pretty one was so close to a human, especially after they had just tried to steal him from him!
They talked for a little bit, the human tipping his head to Ryou. Akefia had been finished with his meal, letting what was left of the human carcass drop away from him, when something caught the sun, and his eye.
He would recognize that shine anywhere!
He jumped out of the water and up to where Ryou was hanging, making a while grab for the pretty, but he forgot to grab a hold of the ship, and fell back into the water with his stomach hurting from where it had hit the railing of the ship. And all without his pretty, as the stupid human had stepped back!
He clutched his stomach, glaring up at the ship. He would’ve tried again, but Ryou dropped back into the water, glaring at him slightly, though there was glint of amusement in his eyes. He held out his hand, and Akefia shot forward and grabbed the pretties out of his hand.
He giggled down at them as he inspected them.
“He thanked us for helping him and his crew. He gave those to us as a prize, though you scared him when you jumped up and tried to steal them. Honestly, Kefa, should you be a little more careful? You could’ve hurt yourself!”
“My pretties,” was Akefia’s only response as he finally started swimming again, this time towards his ship, missing Ryou exasperated shake of the head and fond smile.
