Food story : Nanny's Carbona, A Taste of Childhood
Nanny's Carbonara holds a special place in my heart from when I was a kid. I can still remember the amazing smells of sizzling bacon and the creamy sauce she made with love. Each bite took me back to a time of pure happiness. Nanny's Carbonara wasn't just a dish; it was a magical experience in her cozy kitchen.
Nanny would whisk eggs and cheese to make a smooth and creamy sauce. The pasta, perfectly cooked, soaked up all the delicious flavors. Then came the crispy bacon on top, adding a satisfying crunch. Sitting at the kitchen table, I enjoyed every bite, feeling loved and cared for. Nanny's Carbonara meant more than just food; it was a way to connect and create special memories.
Even now, I try to recreate Nanny's Carbonara, but there's something missing. Maybe it's the secret ingredient of love that only she had. No matter what, Nanny's Carbonara will always remind me of family and the joy of being a kid. The memories of those moments in Nanny's kitchen will stay with me, bringing warmth and love to my heart.
When I smell bacon or see creamy pasta, I'm instantly transported back to those wonderful times. Nanny's Carbonara is a symbol of love and a reminder that food is about more than just taste; it's about the connections and memories it creates.
School trip
In April, the 2nd year class of the school went for a one week trip around Europe. It was masterfully organized by two members of the school student association who booked hotels in each city we went to : Salzburg and Vienna in Austria, Budapest in Hungary and finally Ljubljana in Slovenia. They also managed to provide students with a detailed tour guide about the possible places to visit. We traveled abroad by bus for almost 30 hours in total but it was worth it since we could visit stunning monuments and discover the local culture. We spent a day at Budapest Széchenyi thermal baths and it was a unique moment ! It is certainly the most renowned baths in Europe but it is also a beloved spot to relax and enjoy the rich architecture and therapeutic thermal waters. Everyone could enjoy the pool, we even managed to gather in order to take a group picture. The weather was very hot but swimming into cold waters refreshed us. Some of us even stepped in the sauna at 50°C which honestly requires a very high tolerance for extreme heat.
As far as I’m concerned, I will talk about food that we have tested in both Hungary and Slovenia which are known for their rich dishes and tasty meals. Among the typical dishes we had the chance to savor, there was Börek with cheese which consists of layers of pastry filled with a mixture of cheese and sometimes herbs or spices. While exploring Budapest, we discovered a big bakery that had the most amazing smell of freshly baked goods. We couldn't resist trying the Cheese Börek, especially that it was recommended by the residents of that area, and it was absolutely worth it!
During our visit to Ljubljana, we also had the opportunity to taste Štruklji. We found a cozy restaurant and decided to give it a try. We chose the cottage cheese filling, and it was definitely delicious.
Theatre play
On the 5th and 6th of June, the school theatre club will act in a play at the MJC Pichon from 8pm. The troupe is made of 12 students of Mines School and 2 students of ENSAD. The theater club of Mines School gathers its members each week for a 2 hours rehearsal with a professional theater producer. The club has been DEEPLY involved in the associative life thorough the year through cakes and churros sales. This allowed them to buy nice costumes for the play. The producer bought them characters tailored costumes and accessories so they can simmer in their characters personality. They contemplate performing the famous Reginald Rose’s play entitled “12 hommes en Colère”. The play is about 12 jurys from a wide range of social and professional class discussing a young boy’s conviction accused of having committed a patricide. The decision ought to be agreed by all the examination board’s members so it can be applied. When the jury are first surveyed, everyone confidently assert that the defendant must be settled as a culprit except for a man who requestions the evidence that were presented during the trial. At the beginning, the rest of the jurys are annoyed by his withdrawal since they want to shorten the council and quickly come up with a verdict. However, he succeeds to plant seeds of doubt among the jury and the conversations between them circle around ethical considerations of presumption of innocence. They also displayed posters on the campus and made promotional videos online to communicate about their play. A few days before the performance, the actors show signs of stress and apprehension toward their script learning. They surely cannot picture how we all can’t wait to see them act and shine under the soft beaming lights of the stage. So, how do you think the council will end? Find out on the 5th and 6th of June!
The cartel 2023
The CARTEL is an event where all the Mines of France come together to compete in different sports. This year, nearly 180 students from Mines de Nancy traveled to Alès to take part. After an 8-hour bus journey, the athletes and supporters of Mines de Nancy arrived in the sunny South of France. From the start, they made an impression by creating a very good atmosphere and winning the arena event. At the same time, the swimmers from Nancy produced a very good performance.
The football competition was full of twists and turns but did not end in the best way for our 15 brave warriors. After a 2nd place in pool following 2 draws, the Mines of Nancy were not qualified for the semi-final because only the first was.Despite a very good level on the pitch, Nancy finds herself playing for 5th place against IMT Atlantique. After an equalizer in the final seconds, Nancy lost after an incredible penalty shootout. The fatigue of the previous evening is in my opinion partly responsible.
The results were, however, not so disappointing in all sports, with a gold medal in tennis and climbing, a second place in women's rugby and a third place in badminton and women's basketball, Nancy also knew how to shine beyond ofability to be louder than other schools for the price of ambiance.
Thanks to the involvement and motivation of athletes and supporters, the Mines de Nancy won 5th place in the competition and the famous atmosphere prize for the 2nd year in a row. This is a real achievement given that this award is the ultimate goal of the school. This victory is due in particular to the school's rap, which brought together all the students of the Mines de Nancy.
Congratulations to everyone !

The melting of the Permafrost
Out of the many threats and dangers posed by climate change, the melting of the Permafrost is one of the most worrying long term, and one whose possible impact hasn’t been properly estimated yet. To remedy this, many scientists are resorting to brand new technologies to try and improve our understanding of it. For those in the back who weren’t paying attention, the permafrost is the underground ice from the north and south pole, one that holds a massive amount of carbon and matter used by micro-organisms to produce methane, a green-house gas much worse than CO2. The thawing of the permafrost would then worsen the current climate situation, and cause even more permafrost to melt.
For their experiments, these scientists use a one of a kind drone - one with a 3 m wingspan and without wheels for its landing - to analyze the methane plumes it is travelling above; providing the experts a detailed 3D layout of the methane concentrations in the Alaskan Landscape. Floating above the Big Trail Lake, in Alaska, a complex tower kitted out with measuring instruments is used to gather data on what could be one of the region’s most polluting lakes.

Science Magazine : Taming Grapes
While walking among the rows of the Artem’s mediatheque, we found this amazing “Science” magazine about wine! What is exciting about the subject is that it explains theoretically the ins and out of wine, which at first sight seems to be a light subject. The magazine Science is a review published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. It is a weekly review which is today considered as one of the best academic journals. The main goal of the journal is to publish article related to research and science
This issue specifically highlights the roots of two domestications for grapes, underpinning the rise of human civilization in the Near East and South Caucasus. Furthermore, the main article explains the history of vegetation propagation in grape cultivation and their adaptations to the environment leading to introgressions. Those gene transfers carried wild traits including edibility suiting to winemaking
Besides vine domestication subjects, the magazine unveils articles on diversified fields. From plant genetics to drug discovery, the magazine covers a wide range of recent research topics that deserve to have a shed light on. Hence, the Science magazine targets readers outsourcing a certain interest toward scientific news and rigorously technical explanation of phenomenon related to medicine, geology, chemistry and physics. Finally, the magazine underlines articles circling around interesting subjects that are brilliantly illustrated by high-quality pictures. However, we were quite annoyed by the headache provoking tiny font size.

Science magazine
Science magazine is one of the most highly regarded and prestigious scientific publications in the world. It was created in 1880 by Thomas Edison but it rapidly became a prestigious research reference with publications of Albert Einstein and Edwin Hubble for instance. It covers a wide range of topics across various scientific disciplines, including physics, chemistry, biology, environmental science, and neuroscience, among others. Science magazine publishes original research articles, review papers, and news stories written by leading experts in their respective fields. Its articles are peer-reviewed and selected based on their scientific rigor, innovation, and significance. Science magazine also features news and opinion pieces that provide insights into the latest developments and trends in the scientific community. As a highly respected and widely-read scientific publication, Science magazine is an excellent resource for engineers and scientists seeking to stay informed about the latest research and developments in their fields. This issue of the magazine is called Sight Unseen, symbolized by the front cover that shows the eyes of transparent larval crustaceans. Why are those eyes so special ? They are made of opaque pigments that take the color of their environment, therefore this specificity provides a strong advantage to hide from predators. But what if optical engineering materials could mimic this natural process ? This would improve solar energy, communications, remote sensing and other light-dependent technologies. Such innovations can come out from bioinspiration.
