From now until Sunday I am selling $100 signed 5x7 inch archival prints (above is the first of several options) depicting Syrians fleeing Kobani, a town on the Syria/Turkey border, while under siege by the Islamic State in September 2014. 100% of the profits (minus printing/shipping expenses) will go towards expenses for a three-week filmmaking workshop for teenagers in Za'atari Refugee Camp, Jordan. Please read below for more information about the workshop and email [email protected] to order a print. For those interested in donating but unable to afford the print, there is also a $20 option available, described below. Thanks for the support! In August 2014, through a partnership with Magnum Photos, Save the Children and Apple, I led an iPhone photography workshop for 10 teenagers in Za’atari Refugee Camp, Jordan. It was a rewarding experience, am still in contact with several teens and was able to re-visit them last fall. I discussed the experience with Aaron Wagner, a friend and teacher at a middle school in our hometown in Washington State. We decided to form a relationship between the teenagers in his classes and those I met at Za’atari, in the form of filmmaking workshops whereby each group of teens make short docs to describe their experience in the camp. Students in Washington would then do the same and the docs would be shared between the two groups. Aaron (@aaronvotchildren) and the Syrian filmmaker Faisal Attrache (@fatrache) made a trip to further research the idea of a 3-week workshop this July. The culmination of the project will be a series of 20 documentary short films (1 for each participant) written, directed, and filmed by the youth involved. With the help of Save the Children and other funders, the idea is quickly becoming a reality - but more funding is needed. Aaron’s organization, Voices of the Children, has kicked off a week-long $20 donation drive that ends on Sunday. The donation goes directly towards workshop expenses with the teens in the Za’atari and is tax deductable. Click on the link in my profile if you would like to donate.
