Friendly reminder that “dove” releases for events such as weddings are incredibly cruel
one of the publicized cases involves a “dove” aka domesticated white pigeon being released by the pope and immediately attacked and killed by a crow and seagull in front of the crowd.
this pigeon was lucky, most have much slower deaths. They’re domesticated and not designed to be “free” since they rely on humans for food and protection. If predators don’t get them, they’ll starve or die of parasites or poisoning…it’s just not a cool thing to do. there are some companies that have trained homing pigeons that’ll be set “free” and then recall either to their home or owner. this is at least a better option because at least they’re trained, but they’re still at risk of getting lost or attacked by predators.
the best thing is to just Not Do It
(instead consider adopting a pair of rescue pigeons to celebrate your love! more about the cruelty of releases here: http://www.pigeonrescue.org/faqs-2/why-dove-releases-are-cruel/ which also contains information on adopting pigeons)
Alternatively, release native butterflies! It might not be as dramatic, but still cool
This is a really good idea too!
