Last night, they raped an underage girl and, even in the midst of that trauma, the camera focused on Theon and how painful it was for him to watch it. Sansa is raped in her childhood home, in her parent’s bed, where the only good times of her life were spent. And even the horror of sexual violence in the only safe place that she has ever known isn’t the focus of the scene. Pain does not even belong to the woman who has to suffer it.

What are your major hopes for A Song of Ice and Fire?

I hope that it’s good. Or I hope that it’s narratively, thematically, and emotionally satisfying, but that’s just another way of saying “I hope that it’s good.” Anything beyond that…like, “I hope Jon and Dany become king and queen” or “I hope Sansa becomes Queen in the North” or “I hope Arya gets reunited with her siblings” or what have you? That’s just not how I approach these kinds of things. I don’t know why you’d want to tie your appreciation of longform narrative to specific outcomes; it’s like pausing in the middle of a song to say “I hope it ends with a drum solo.” Who am I to say, and why would I say it? The mentality is foreign to me. I grew to appreciate the work because of its quality, not because of specific events that lived up to my hopes, and so it remains.

I don’t post leaked episodes. I think it’s shameful that they were leaked and it really takes away from all the excitement after an episode airs.
