Cannon Dill’s “Casual Decline” at Athen B. Gallery.

Opening on Saturday, October 15th, 2016 at Athen B. Gallery in Oakland, California is artist Cannon Dill’s solo exhibit “Casual Decline.”

I’ll let you read Cannon’s explanation of his work for this show as it’s personal and beautiful: “The idea behind this body of work is to convey a careless feeling that was captured in a photograph of me when I was six years old. Unfortunately, the broader explanation seems to be more complicated than I had imagined so I began breaking down the photograph into a handful of reinterpretations through symbolism while exploring a wide range of mediums.  I want the paintings to feel important, strong, and full - while retaining their playfulness. The drawings in the show are a continued conversation from my previous exhibit, ‘In my Own Time,’ as if two friends had reconnected with new material to share.  I kept revisiting this very simple crudely drawn picture of a falling star, its edges wild with personality and fear.  I kept thinking of myself being 6 again, the bright young star slowly growing older and spiraling into pieces. This is what the show is all about; uncertainty, expectation, and carelessness.”

“Casual Decline” will be on view until November 4th, 2016.
