Napoleon II death day today š¢
If I were greatly involved in developing a biopic about Napoleon II (directed by Michael Bay and Sam Levinson) ā I'd cast: Noah Schnapp as him, Dakota Johnson as Sophie, Jared Leto as Metternich, Chris Pratt as Prokesch, Gal Gadot as Marie Louise, Sydney Sweeney as Fanny Elssler, Vin Diesel as ghost Napoleon, Willem Dafoe as the emperor/his grandfather. And in the post-credits scene, to set up the sequel: the future Napoleon III as The Rock and Alexandre Colonna-Walewski as Danny Devito.
(I'm kidding, obviously, I'd rather throw myself off a cliff if this happens... but it feels like I'm wishing for it as I'm saying this, so I swear, I'm not šš)
But jokes aside, if you (yes you š) were making a biopic about Napoleon II ā what would you include, not just the casting? Because despite the obvious fact that his father is undoubtedly famous, I'm still personally craving more of Napoleon II in movies, TV series or something lol.
HOW DARE YOU TRAUMATISE ME LIKE THIS ššš
Okay so please keep in mind that this is just my personal taste in how films should be made and it is not objective!
So there are two biopics about Napoleon II, LāAiglon (1931) and Napoleon II LāAiglon (1961), and he also features as a main character in the romance film Fanny Elssler (1937). There have also been other films featuring him in the 1910s,20s,30s but sadly they appear to be lost media so I am going to base my judgments solely on the three surviving films!
All of them are deeply inaccurate to varying degrees, both in terms of events and characterisation. The 1931 film was based on the play LāAiglon by Edmond Rostand, which is very inaccurate for a variety of reasons, partially because Rostand was influenced by anti-Austrian prejudice in pre-ww1 France. The 1961 film is also based on that play, but also with inspiration from the biography of Napoleon II by Andre Castelot, which is quite a bad biography in my humble opinion. As for the 1937 film, I donāt have any proof of this but I believe it took inspiration from the biographies by the Austrian historians Edouard Wertheimer and Jean de Bourgoing due to some of the details featured in the film which are only written about in those biographies, however despite being based on the best sources the 1937 film takes huge liberties as it is a romance drama about two people who never met.
The 1937 film is also deeply problematic because it was made in Nazi Germany and although it isnāt overt propaganda it does perpetuate Nazi ideology by creating a romanticised version of 19th century Austria where everyone is Aryan (completely erasing the Jewish and Slavic communities which existed in Vienna in Napoleon IIās time). The film is also part of a movement in Nazi propaganda of appealing to French nostalgia for the Napoleonic era in order to gain French support for Nazism. Thereās also a scene in the film where South East Asian culture is appropriated which is really gross.
So before I say anything in praise of elements of the 1937 film from a historical perspective, I just want to make it really clear that the film is really awful and I do not approve of its messaging at all!!!!
I really donāt know much about modern actors so my casting ideas will just be based on old films sorry š
Out of the actors who played Napoleon II in the three films mentioned above - Jean Weber in 1931, Rolf Moebius in 1937, and Bernard Verley in 1961 - I would say that Rolf Moebius is the best in terms of both appearance and performance. I did some research into his life story which was super crazy because in 1938-39 he became a literal Nazi poster boy because of the film contract he had signed in order to act in Fanny Elssler but then he got conscripted in ww2 but then after the war he became very politically progressive and acted in East German communist romance movies which is a crazy political glow up š But anyways I found out that he was a complete unknown before he was cast as Napoleon II, he only got the role because he was the understudy for a minor role in a play in Berlin and it just happened that he ended up playing the role on the night that a movie executive went to see the play, and generally I think that casting unknown actors is the best way to get a good actor to play a historical figure!
As well as bearing a physical resemblance to Napoleon II, I think that Rolf Moebius played him with a surprising level of depth and maturity given that he was only 21 when it was filmed - apparently his mother died when he was 15, and you can really tell in some of the scenes in this film that his portrayal of Napoleon IIās depression came from personal experience.
As for casting other characters, I havenāt thought about it very deeply, but something that is absolutely essential is that Prokesch needs to be played by a hot guy because I feel like itās crucial information that everyone thought he was gorgeous.
Some things that I would generally like to see in a film about Napoleon II are:
- more extensive filming permission in Vienna please! the films about him evidently had quite limited filming permission which I think perhaps limits films ability to portray the decadence of the Habsburg court. I also think it would just make a film feel more grounded in reality if Napoleon II was shown walking around the old parts of Vienna or being moody in his room in the Hofburg or going to church at the imperial chapel, rather than just the basic shots of Schƶnbrunn Palace that feature in every film
- less romance! Ideally there would be at least one film about him without a fictional romance, but alas š itās fine to include some of his brief flirtations but I feel that the films about him make romance more important to his life than it actually was
- more friendship! I think the close friendship between Napoleon II and Prokesch was really cute and also a really important part of his life story
- worse mother-son relationship! both the 1931 film and the 1961 film show Napoleon II reconciling with his mother on his deathbed, unfortunately that was not the case irl and I would like a film to show how cold their relationship really was and how deeply he was hurt by his mothers actions
- less French politics! I know this will sound crazy, but I think that films focus too much on his desire to return to France and not enough on his support for the Polish uprising or his interest in non-French history
- less evil Metternich?! look, as much as I hate Metternich, films need to stop portraying him as an evil mastermind. irl he was more of a yucky slimy loser who bullied his employees and panicked about the fact that he had no idea what to do with Napoleon II. I think we need a film to include that one time Metternich got really embarrassed when Napoleon II was mean to him while Ferdinand was getting crowned king of Hungary. except none of these films acknowledge the existence of Ferdinand which brings me onto my next pointā¦
- more Habsburgs! all the films about Napoleon II are made by people who only care about the Bonaparte side of the family and it really shows lol. I think that depicting his relationships with his family (specifically his admiration for his great-uncle Johann, his willingness to defend his uncle Ferdinand from mean rumours, and his weird one-sided beef with his uncle Franz Karl) reveal a lot about his personality. I also need there to be a scene of him playing toy soldiers with baby Franz Joseph.

Hello š do you know why NapolĆ©on II didnāt think well of his Bonaparte cousins?

So to be clear we only really know his thoughts on the Bonapartist movement in general and on his cousin Napoleone Camerata who visited him in Vienna, he didnāt give much thought to his other cousins.
Napoleon II wanted to become the emperor of France, but only with the explicit consent of the European powers and the people of France. In consequence, he did not approve of the Italian Bonapartists who wanted to install him on the throne through more violent or devious means. Prince Franz Joseph Dietrichstein, the older brother of Napoleon IIās tutor, wanted Napoleon II to rule France but advised him to ignore any propositions from the Bonapartists which did not come from Joseph or Lucien, and Napoleon II agreed that this was the most sensible course of action. Louis and Jerome Bonaparte were seen as more unreliable characters, and Louis-Napoleon (future Napoleon III) was regarded as a destructive renegade.
In 1830 Napoleone Camerata, the daughter of Elisa Bonaparte, came to Vienna with the intention of contacting Napoleon II, however the only reason why the Austrian authorities allowed her to enter Vienna was because she was regarded as an eccentric fanatic without any actual political authority. Napoleon II was rather distressed when she accosted him, kissed his hand and gave him a letter making political overtures, and so he went to Prokesch for advice. Prokesch said that Countess Camerata was behaving in a reckless manner that would only cause trouble and so she should be ignored, but because she was a woman it was best for Napoleon II to be chivalrous and send her a polite letter telling her that it was best for her to not contact him again. And so thatās what he did! I think Napoleon II was just quite disturbed about Countess Camerataās recklessness and how she had essentially been stalking him ever since she arrived in Vienna, I think that if he had survived his sickness and traveled to Naples as was arranged and if he had encountered his more conventional cousins in Italian high society then he would have been much more open to befriending his cousins
fun fact: the national gallery in England holds lots of paintings that were formerly owned by Junot because Laure had to sell his art collection after his death and in 1818 many of the masterpieces he had owned were put up for auction in London and bought by the English aristocracy who later donated the art to the national gallery for tax reasons

I often feel that posting stuff about Junot is futile because thereās been so many hateful things written about him in the 200 years since his death that no matter how much positivity I try to spread he will always be misunderstood. It really hurts because I know what itās like to face prejudice based on mental problems and to have your autonomy taken away because people say youāre not capable of making decisions for yourself and it just makes me so protective of Junot, I want to keep him safe but I canāt š¢

- phone calls and FaceTime so he could chat with his friends when theyāre away in different countries without running the risk of letters being read by the secret police
- military strategy video games
- going to the cinema. He went to the theatre nearly every day so I think heād like movies too! I think he would watch Kingdom of Heaven and cry the whole time from finding Baldwin too relatable
- rollercoasters. He liked going on the early 19th century version of rollercoasters with his uncles and so I think he would also enjoy the modern iteration although he would probably throw up
- chatting with people from different countries on social media. He loved Poland so I think he would make friends with Polish people on social media and then become internet besties with his brother Alexander Walewski
- The James Webb Space Telescope. He enjoyed studying astronomy and so I think heād be really intrigued by all the modern developments in our understanding of space!
- collectible items. Out of boredom he collected stuff like walking sticks and handkerchiefs, and so I think in modern day he would get drawn into overconsumption and buy lots of collectible stuff. I think he would be too classy for labubu type overconsumption but would buy hundreds of collectible military figurines
- cigarettes š¬. Unfortunately despite having lung disease he smoked like most young men in the 1830s did š But although smoking a pipe was seen as normal it wasnāt really as chic as smoking cigarettes became in the 20th century, so I think that in a time period after cigarettes replaced pipes he would be smoking 24/7 for the glamorous aesthetic š
A few people have expressed surprise over Napoleon II being a smoker, and unfortunately I think we often vastly underestimate the levels of tobacco consumption in early 19th century Europe š Napoleon was addicted to snuff and so Napoleon II, wanting to be like his father, decided to also take tobacco. However Prokesch reassures us that Napoleon II only smoked when he was bored and depressed rather than having a tobacco addiction

Junot also appears several times in Peletās memoirs. It seems that it was not only Ney who was uncooperative with MassĆ©na; the corps and division commanders under him also harbored dissatisfaction toward MassĆ©na. Pelet suggests that Loison, a divisional general was operating in the shadows. Loison also appeared to be involved in suspicious activities regarding the āRoi Nicolasā affair surrounding Soult. It seems that Loison was quite a complex and cunning character. It is possible that Loison was also involved in encouraging Ney to loudly criticize Soult regarding the āRoi Nicolasā matter (āMĆ©moires du gĆ©nĆ©ral Cte de Saint-Chamans : ancien aide de camp du MarĆ©chal Soult, 1802-1832ā).
According to Pelet, Junot suffered a gunshot wound that pierced his nose during a reconnaissance mission. Looking at portraits of Junot, he is depicted as quite handsome, but it is known that he suffered multiple serious head injuries throughout his life. What kind of damage did a gunshot wound that pierced his nose inflict upon him? Pelet speculates whether these repeated head injuries might have contributed to Junotās tragic death.
Additionally, Pelet recounts an experience of being invited to dine with Junot, where he was treated to a wonderfully delicious cornbread.

In 1810 Ney wrote this letter to Junot where he complains about Massena, which implies that Junot shared his complaints given how Ney has no reservations about voicing them:
āIf we unite, we would be able to attack the English; this action would sieze the country [Portugal] with one blow and might have disastrous results in England. ... It is impossible for me to give a satisfactory explanation for the conduct of His Highness, the Prince d'Essling [Massena] and the distress he has caused the 6th Corpsā¦ But you, M. le Duc [Junot], who senses without doubt, the justice of my observationsā¦ I believe you will seriously consider coming to take part in the glory that awaits you in fighting the Englishā¦ Not only will I leave you the choice of your position, but I will share with you the troops I have at my disposalā

Junot indeed suffered a very serious facial injury in January 1811, and itās most likely that complications caused by this wound are what led to the rapid decline of his mental state in the following years. Sadly there arenāt any portraits of Junot from 1811 until his death because he was so insecure about how āuglyā the wound made him!
Junotās son Napoleon says:
'It is known that my father was riddled with wounds. One of those which was, without question, the cause of the fatal illness in consequence of which he succumbed, was the bullet which he received above the nose, at the lines of Torres Vedras. To extract the bullet, it was necessary to open the cheek above the maxillary bone; this scar, together with that of the wound itself, had greatly disturbed the harmony of the lines of his face.ā
a soldier who witnessed the incident says:
āThe Duc d'Abrantes, impatient to see for himself the English columns, ran at a gallop on a small hill, beyond even the most advanced skirmishers. It was then that he was seriously wounded by a bullet that hit him in the lower forehead. Four English hussars had remained in vedettes on a neighboring height, in order to observe our march. As soon as they saw some men on horseback approaching, they fired their carbine, and ran to their rearguard, certainly not imagining, on such an occasion, that they had wounded a general-in-chief. The bullet shattered the bone of the nose, and slipped over the apple of the right cheek.
The Duc dāAbrantĆØs retained composure, in spite of this blow in so dangerous a place, and while the first apparatus was being placed on him on the ground itself, he ordered that the pursuit of the enemy should not be ceased, in order to ascertain exactly whether it was true that they had made large gatherings in the direction of Alcoentre. It was obtained that all the advice given was false, and the troops returned to their first positions that evening.
The next day, the Duc d'Abrantes endured to go on horseback to his headquarters at Pernes, although he suffered greatly. The chief surgeon of the 8th corps immediately performed the operation of splitting his cheek, to extract the bullet, which was found to be entirely flattened, by the resistance it had experienced, in slipping on the maxillary bone. He thought he could assure us, a few days later, that the wound would not be mortal; but he did not conceal the fact that it might sooner or later have very serious and unfortunate consequences.ā
