i don’t see how ballet, opera, classical music etc are supposed to be inaccessible… they are unpopular and most people aren’t interested in them, but that doesn’t mean inaccessible… every single classic is available ten times over on the internet for free - you can hardly find something more accessible than this. i know i’m being a bit obtuse and when people say “inaccessible” they essentially mean “elitist”… both in terms of prices and in terms of the culture surrounding it - or rather the culture people imagine surrounds it… but at the same time why the hell do you care that carmen 1st balcony is 300€? just watch it on youtube lol. that’s how *i* got into opera…

it's true that the discussion "are LIVE opera, symphonic music etc. accessible?" is absurd because the answer 100% depends on where you're from lol. when i lived in london there was a time i went to live performances basically every day because wigmore hall was free for under 30s. someone who lives in a bustling european capital is going to have different opportunities from someone who lives in a town of 20k in the middle of an entertainment desert...

i tend to also do that with movies esp. if i'm watching them at home but with movies it's true i have finished at least a couple i hated because of social considerations (i saw i would have to make too many people get up to leave the theater)

opera on the other hand is extremely, extremely easy to walk out of unnoticed because you can just wait for the entracte, pretend you're going for a smoke and then never come back... i keep a collection of unreturned re-entry tokens like treasure
