Three years ago I was attending a Product Design course back in Portugal, the first project we were asked to do was to transform one of our classrooms into a student flat. This involved surveying the room, doing tec drawing as well as CAD drawing on a 1:20 scale followed by a sketch model of the room and a final white card model including all the new additions and changes to the room. This was very similar to the new project 'TRANSFORMING A LOCATION' that me and my class are currently working on. The problem with the first one was that I had little to no motivation to do it.
Product design was not the course I wanted to be in but due to the fact that all the courses were full, attending it was the only way to be in the school I wanted. Product Design is farely similar to what I wanted to do and I knew that most of the skills would be transferable to a course/career that I would love. We had to be precise with everything, we didn't have any creative freedom and the thing I was most excited about - decoration - wasn't even a part of the project. I will however admit that the skills I learned, from scale drawing to model making, have come in handy now that I'm doing this new project, but at the time even though I realized that it would be useful to learn this things, I did not have fun, I wasn't motivated and it was very hard to power trough that feeling of restraint. Even though the fundamentals of both projects are the same, I'm happy about doing this new one. Why is that? The propose of each one is completely different. The first one was about architecture, the purpose was to transform a room into a functional house, that meant following architectural rules, never deviating from the standards of what our teachers proposed. (Needles to say all our projects looked more or less the same). With this one it should be treated as if someone hired me to come up with a set, this doesn't need to be functional it just need to look like it is. A set doesn't need to follow architectural rules as long as it is functional to put on a screen, there are no restrains to creativity and that makes me want to work on this project rather than just ''get through it'. All the projects will look different, that's because we are different people and being allowed to express that to my work helps me understand who I am as well as take inspiration from different projects from my classmates.
