I added appropriate audio and rendered my final piece.
This is the basic render of my piece without audio, grain or glitches.
This is how some of the glitches in my piece appear
I based the look of my piece on first person shooter games and particularly the layout of the first person view in Skyrim and Fallout.
I finally decided to film a moving shot and overlay it to look like something out of a first person video game. I experimented with making it gold like my other ideas, but I didn't like how it looked so I chose a light blue.
I stabilised the footage in After Effects, but it remained blurry and jerky so I decided to work around it. As with other projects I have completed, I wanted to create glitch effects in the piece. I chose to use the 'directional blur' effect to smear the footage, inverted the colours, and created large amounts of noise. After this, I created masks to select areas of the frame to have the effects in.
Ideas
My first plan was to create a short film involving VFX. I decided I wanted to create a hologram effect 'projected' from a phone to display a 'near future' sci fi form of communication. I wanted to involve my friends on the drama course as actors and some of my other friends to help with filming.
Commonly, film and TV depicts holograms as transparent/translucent and as using reduced colours, usually blue or green.
The Marvel movies stick to the reduced colour scheme, but tend to show holograms as slightly more solid.
Black Panther a few times uses full colour holograms to demonstrate Wakanda's higher level of technology compared to the rest of the world. These full colour holograms appear to be made of particles, which shift and move like grains of sand.
Other times, the holograms in the film are more delicate and almost ethereal in nature. A lot of the Wakandan holograms are purple, which is the arc colour of the entire movie, though blue and red are also seen.
I decided to pay homage to these films, but add my own take by making the hologram gold. Leading on from my inspiration of Superhero films like Iron Man, I wanted to involve some kind of superpowers in the piece. I wanted to have the character portrayed in the hologram display a strange ability by having their eyes glow or sparks fly from them.
However, because my friends were too busy with their own final projects, I decided to experiment with other ideas. Still using my hologram idea, I wanted to create a futuristic computer screen and perhaps lay it over footage I filmed. I created mockups to see what I would want this to look like. I changed my mind however, as I felt like it was too much like a project I completed in college.
Final Major Project
“Using the skills you have developed this year, produce a short piece up to ninety seconds long involving visual effects and/or motion graphics.”
I rendered a version of the piece with glow and grain, but with no audio or additional text to see how it looked in motion.
I rendered my footage out as a TIFF sequence and imported it into After Effects. I used gaussian blur and blending modes to achieve the glow I wanted in the piece.
After this I applied grain to make it look like it was filmed on an old camera and added a ‘typed on’ continuity announcement, that also looks like it is from an old computer. This calls back to the era when Superman was originally brought to screen in the 70s.
I talked to my lecturers and decided to change the composition of my piece a lot. I decided that having the ‘ground’ of the shot be tilted and the logo straight would put more focus on the logo. The tilted ground also makes the environment seem weird and unnatural, which is appropriate to the alien settings of many sci-fi shows and movies.
As a proof of concept, I rendered a high quality still frame. I don’t have time to render the full piece like this however, so I will render it with less intensive settings and place effects over my piece in After Effects.
To create the crystals for my ident, I started out with a flat 2D polygon shape and extruded it into a 3D object.
I used the ‘extrude inner’ tool to create a central point and moved it up, resulting in a prism shape with a ‘cone’ on top.
After this, I selected all of the edges of the polygons in the model and used the ‘bevel’ tool to sculpt the shape slightly to make it look more crystalline.
I applied a transparent ‘material’ and played with the reflectance until I found a look I liked.
I made small clusters of crystals by duplicating the initial object and making it shorter or taller to create variety.
I also placed lights inside them to make them glow, but this didn’t work as well as I wanted so I ended up creating the glow in after effects later.
I will be using Cinema 4D to produce the 3D for my project. Cinema 4D is a 3D modelling and animation software. It is fairly easy to quickly create 3D graphics suitable for VFX and motion graphics. To learn the software and experiment, I played with it over several days. Through my experimentation I managed to model a sci fi looking ray gun.
I intend to create an ident for the channel SyFy. SyFy has undergone many changes in its identity since it was launched in 1992, originally being the ‘Sci-Fi Channel’, then shortening to ‘Sci Fi’, before being renamed ‘SyFy’ in 2009. I’ve analysed the channel’s visual identity, and decided that I will not be altering it too much.
This is what the channel’s current idents look like. They show imagery typical of the science fiction genre such as space and robots, typically though film and photorealistic CG.
I would like to see idents that are more specific to the channel’s programming, with elements indicating upcoming programmes. My idea is that the ident I will produce would be part of a series specific to the channel’s most popular shows.
My concept is to have the channel logo floating above a ‘field’ of green glowing crystals. The camera would pull out from within a crystal and rotate to ‘find’ the logo. Glowing crystals are a common element in many sci fi and fantasy settings, which ties into the channel’s programming. More specifically, it ties into one of the series currently being aired on SyFy. This is ‘Krypton’, which is in the Superman franchise. The glowing green crystals are reminiscent of how Kryptonite has been shown in the Superman comics and films.
TV Ident Project
A TV Ident is a short promotional bumper used on TV channels to inform the viewer of what they’re watching and to establish the channel’s brand. Creative Bloq describes TV idents as “the little bit of video that plays a few seconds before a programme starts, informing the viewer of which channel they're watching. A promotional sequence, it's a critical part of a TV stations brand identity“. Very often, Idents contain a narrator or text to tell the viewer what programme is airing next. In this context, idents may be known as continuity announcements.
The BBC’s idents are very representative of how idents function. They have evolved over time from still cards and filmed visuals, to motion graphics and full CGI.
My task is to make a TV ident for an existing channel, keeping in mind their existing branding and programming, and incorporating 3D. I don’t have to rebrand the channel, unless I feel like the current branding doesn’t properly represent the programming and demographic.
