tessa had learned a lot of lessons, but the biggest of them all was to KEEP GOING. even when it hurt. no matter what happened in her life, the female would always push herself up and smile brightly. maybe she would crumble for a second. she was, after all, HUMAN. but, at the end of the day, she put on a beautiful facade. like the one she gave to her partner, miles. she acted as if people were not being bitten and rising from the dead just outside the hospital building. it was easier that way, though ; PRETENDING that it was just the two of them in that room.
“ okay, so i have almost done all of the rats. rat g is the only one left ! “ she declared happily, picking up the rat and taking it to mass it. “ are you almost done ? “ the rat was placed down, and she hunched down a little to get a better read of the numbers. “ i was thinking that, maybe, if we finish this early we could go get some drinks. i was thinking of getting a martini. “ the moment she had written down the weigh and picked up the rat, she turned around. eyes wide and lips forming a little ‘ o ‘. “ ooh, or we could get some hot chocolate ! i’ve been DYING for a hot chocolate. well, not really, but you know what i mean. what do you say ? “ that’s when she heard a distant rustling that sounded a lot like footsteps. tessa couldn’t help but furrow her eyebrows at the sound, believing they were the only ones in that floor. “ miles did you ….— “
They were going to fine. Melissa was alive, breathing and stable. As long as his sister remained, he would, too. This world was not something that could be forgotten, people would not be left behind. Over and over, humanity would prevail. They were not HOPELESS, nor were they HELPLESS. Their scientists, himself included, would find a cure. Until that time came, life would go on as usual. Inside of the lab alongside his partner, Tessa, he looked over their notes from the last couple of months, wiping the outside from his mind.
“Great job, as usual!” He replied enthusiastically, smiling over at her. He jotted down one last observation before closing his notebook and turning towards her. “I’m done, too. Everything’s been recorded, and all of those recordings are sorted for once.” Miles may be a great scientist, but he failed in the organization department. Luckily, he had a wonderful team who cleaned up after themselves and him. “Your martini will be on me,” he agreed, chuckling. It was refreshing to see someone keep their spirits up despite such violent odds. “Hot chocolate? I can go for that too. I think we should mix ‘em, like hot chocolate and Bailey’s? Do those even exist?” He heard the sound as soon as she did and flipped around to face the door. “I didn’t leave it open...” He trailed off.
Before they could speak anymore, Miles was in MOTION. Although he had no weapons, he did have common sense. He rushed forward, moving to lock the door. Only he was TOO LATE. The door knob turned, opening, and in stepped someone he had never seen before. The man had a wild look in his bloodshot eyes, his hands were shaking, and he was YELLING. “What is happen?! Someone tell me what the fuck is happening! You scientists have to know! My son -- he’s sick! How do I fix him?”
