NAHEMA and NHI Announce Agreement for Software Release 3 Development for NH90 Helicopter

The NATO Helicopter Management Agency (NAHEMA) and NHIndustries (NHI) announced today the signing of a major contract for the development and delivery of Software Release 3 (SWR3) for the NH90 helicopter. This milestone agreement, valued in excess of 600M€, underscores a continued commitment to enhancing the operational capabilities and performance, and extending the in-service life of the NH90 fleet. The signing ceremony took place today at the NAHEMA headquarters in Aix-en-Provence, with the attendance of senior representatives from both organizations and NAHEMA’s countries involved in the initiative: Belgium, Germany, Italy and The Netherlands. The SWR3 is an important configuration update for the in-service NH90 helicopters, achieved as a collaboration between the NHI Partner Companies (Airbus Helicopters, Leonardo and Fokker) and major European suppliers. Turkey Launches Third Reis-Class Submarine at Gölcük Shipyard

The Muratreis, the third vessel in the Turkish Navy's Reis-class submarine fleet, has been successfully floated at the Gölcük Shipyard Command. This milestone is part of the New Type Submarine Project (YTDP), a collaborative initiative between the Turkish Defense Industry Agency (SSB) and ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems (TKMS). Valued at €2.06 billion, the YTDP involves the construction of six cutting-edge submarines. The first in the series, TCG Piri Reis, was laid down in 2015 and launched in December 2019. Piri Reis began sea trials in December 2022 and is expected to enter service in 2023, with each subsequent submarine slated for commissioning annually until 2027. Reis-class submarines are based on the German Type 214 model and boast a length of 68.35 meters, a beam of 6.3 meters, and a submerged displacement of approximately 2,050 tons. The production of the Reis-class, formerly Cerbe-class, submarines takes place in two large hangars, Block A and B, of the Submarine Production Plant ("Denizaltı İmalat Fabrikası") at Gölcük Naval Shipyard. US Air Force F-15E Fighter Jets Police NATO Skies in the High North

On June 7, a team of specialists from NATO’s Combined Air Operations Centre (CAOC) at Uedem, Germany, declared four U.S. Air Force F-15E fighter jets from RAF Lakenheath in the United Kingdom mission-ready. They are conducting the Allied Air Policing mission over Iceland in close cooperation with the Icelandic Coast Guard flying out of NATO Keflavik Air Base. After arriving in Iceland in the beginning of June, the U.S. F-15E pilots conducted familiarisation flights above Iceland and began harmonising command and control relationships with the CAOC and the local NATO Control and Reporting Centre (CRC) Keflavik, “Loki”. This work laid the foundation for the certification of the U.S. detachment confirming the chain of command and the alerting procedures are in place to ensure NATO - via the CAOC and the CRC - can launch the F-15Es for Quick Reaction Alert -Intercept missions if needed. The Spanish Army has reached a significant milestone with the deployment of the VCZAP "Castor" Combat Engineering Vehicle in international operations for the first time. This comes following the recent delivery of the vehicles by GDELS Santa Bárbara Sistemas. The VCZAP "Castor" will make its international debut at the Combat Training Center in Drawsko Pomorskie, Poland, during the multinational exercise EURETEX2024. EURETEX 24 is a biannual tactical exercise conducted directly by EUROCORPS and planned by the EUROCORPS Engineer Branch since 1996. EURETEX 24 is a tactical-level exercise and aims to foster and enhance interoperability among engineers. The contingent sent to Poland includes two units of the VCZAP "Castor," which are part of the Pizarro/ASCOD family of vehicles. These units belong to the XII Engineering Combat Battalion of the “Guadarrama” Brigade. The "Guadarrama" Brigade is among the first in the Spanish Armed Forces to receive this state-of-the-art system, designed to support advanced military engineering and sapper operations. Building on a proud legacy of world class mobility and survivability, spanning more than two decades, the CV90 MkIV brings unrivalled technological capabilities and flexibility to complex battlefields. With proven combat capabilities in recent conflicts, the IFV variant is the foundation of the CV90 family. The Combat Vehicle 90 (CV90) is a family of Swedish tracked armoured combat vehicles designed by the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV), Hägglund & Söner and Bofors during the mid-1980s to early 1990s, before entering service in Sweden in the mid-1990s. The CV90 platform design has continuously evolved from the Mk 0 to the current Mk IV with technological advances and changing battlefield requirements. With a total of 1,700 vehicles ordered in 17 different variants, the CV90 has covered more than eight million kilometers. ASELSAN to Debut KORKUT Air Defense System on 8×8 Vehicle at Eurosatory 2024

ASELSAN is set to showcase its cutting-edge products and solutions at the upcoming EUROSATORY 2024, taking place from June 17-21. The centerpiece of ASELSAN's exhibit will be the KORKUT Air Defense Gun System, making its international debut in a new configuration mounted on an 8×8 vehicle. Already operational within the Turkish Armed Forces in a tracked vehicle format, the KORKUT system can be adapted to meet a variety of operational needs. The Weapon System Vehicle and Command-and-Control Vehicle configurations designed under the Korkut Project are based on the FNSS ACV-30 and is fully amphibious and have the capability of propelling themselves in deep water and rivers. This flexibility allows it to function in stationary positions, or mounted on either tracked or 8×8 wheeled vehicles, enhancing its operational effectiveness across various terrains and challenging environments. Each weapon platform carries a twin 2×35 mm Oerlikon KDC-02 cannon, manufactured under licence by MKEK. The cannons can fire different types of 35×228 mm ammunitions including Aselsan made ATOM 35mm airburst ammunition. ATOM 35mm airburst ammunition ejects tungsten pellets at a predetermined distance. It is a smart ammunition which has a base fuse. Together with the ability of precise time counting and the capability of being programmed during firing by taking muzzle velocity into consideration automatically sets the fuse to detonate the round as it approaches a pre-set distance from the target. Whilst a single pellet is too small to do major damage in itself, the accumulation of damage from multiple strikes is designed to destroy wings and control surfaces, sensors and aerodynamics, causing the target to crash. By relocating the crew to a specially protected compartment or capsule, KNDS has reduced the number of onboard personnel to three. This compartment is fortified to provide maximum protection, significantly enhancing crew survivability in hostile environments. The Leopard 2 A-RC 3.0 is armored with reactive protection, and there is potential for integrating an active protection system, further enhancing its defensive capabilities. It is equipped with an automatic loading mechanism capable of firing three shots in just 10 seconds. This turret is adaptable, supporting the installation of 120mm, 130mm, or 140mm guns, thus offering a versatile firepower solution tailored to various combat scenarios. While the exact ammunition capacity remains undisclosed, KNDS has assured that it surpasses the standard load of the traditional Leopard 2. The turret can be outfitted with a remote weapon system featuring a 30x113mm gun and a mortar for deploying smoke screens. This system also offers the flexibility to integrate anti-tank missiles and drones, extending the tank's combat capabilities beyond conventional engagements. The tank's firepower is augmented by a guided missile system, enabling it to engage targets beyond line of sight while on the move. As part of the modernisation of the Slovenian Navy's multi-purpose fast patrol vessel Triglav, HENSOLDT Nexeya France and its local partner PANNAPLUS have won the contract to upgrade the ship's Combat System and associated sensors. To protect the country's 50 kilometres of Adriatic coastline, the Slovenian Navy has a fleet of two ships, which also play an active role in NATO naval operations. This was notably the case in the Mediterranean Sea as part of Operation Sophia under the European Union's Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP). With a view to increasing efficiency and integration within the Alliance's forces, the Slovenian Navy has decided to upgrade the capabilities of the main ship in its fleet, the Triglav, whose name evokes Slovenia's highest summit and also means 'Three Heads'.

The Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) has selected STM for the procurement of three warships under the LMS Batch-2 programme. The ceremony for the “Littoral Mission Ship Batch-2” project was hosted at the Presidency of the Republic of Türkiye today (10th June) in Ankara. The ceremony was attended by Mohamed Khaled Nordin, the Minister of Defence of Malaysia; Prof. Dr. Haluk Görgün, the Presidency of the Republic of Türkiye and the Secretariat of Defence Industries, Prof. Dr. İhsan Kaya, STM Chairman of the Board; and Özgür Güleryüz, STM General Manager, representatives of the Malaysian Ministry of Defense as well as other Turkish defence industry company executives and other invited guests. The Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Croatia has accepted the software-defined radio based Bittium Tactical Wireless IP Network™ (TAC WIN) system and Bittium Tough SDR Vehicular™ radio as tactical communications solutions for the armament of the Croatian Armed Forces. The acceptance follows an implementation phase of few years of the products by the Croatian Navy. The implementation phase was carried out in cooperation with Bittium’s Croatian partner IntellByte INFO, a supplier of IT solutions that acts as the integrator of the Croatian Navy’s tactical communications system entity as well as the contracting party with the Navy. Aurora’s Optionally Piloted Centaur Aircraft Revolutionizes In-Air Testing

Aurora Flight Sciences has carried out flight testing for its Centaur optionally piloted aircraft (OPA), equipped with an EO/IR camera, maritime surveillance radar, and Automatic Identification System payloads. The Aurora flight test team leveraged Centaur’s unique capability to operate as a surrogate uncrewed system, flown from a ground station with an on-board safety pilot, to conduct cost-effective flight testing in the National Airspace System (NAS). In one recent example, Centaur embarked on a mission to evaluate data link quality and determine optimal operating parameters in degraded weather conditions.
