Where to even start with Mickey Milkovich. There aren’t many people who could have him beat in the shitty upbringing department. Growing up in the South Side of Chicago in a house with a homophobic, nazi loving racist for a father, Mickey didn’t exactly have stellar role models in his life. So it was no surprise that he was in and out of juvie during his teenage years. Throw in the fact that he’s gay and would rather be locked in a prison cell than have his dad find out, it didn’t make for an easy life. Then when he was seventeen he met Ian. Maybe met is the wrong word, he knew who he was. Everyone knew the Gallaghers, except the little shit wasn’t on his radar until his younger sister Mandy accused him of trying to mess with her. Of course he never expected that to be the start of some epic love story.
Over the years Ian and Mickey had been through more shit than anyone of them could have imagined. Mickey tried his hardest to push him away but Ian was relentless, he wasn’t giving up on him. It wasn’t long before Mickey was opening up to him in ways he never thought possible. Until his dad caught them, and it all went to shit. His father put a gun to Ian and forced Mickey to have sex with a prostitute. But this wasn’t enough for Terry. who had to keep his son under his control. He then had Mickey marry said hooker, who was now pregnant with supposedly Mickey’s child.
All that didn’t change the fact that Mickey had fallen in love with Ian, but it was a long time before things got any easier, Ian had more than his fair share of problems to deal with on his end. There were plenty of break ups and a few more prison stints. Mickey even going as far as breaking out of prison and running off to Mexico, Ian almost joining him. Almost. Then when Ian got himself thrown in prison for arson, news reached Mickey and he couldn’t stop himself from coming to his aid one last time. Snitching on the cartel in exchange for choosing the prison he would end up in.. and the cell. They were finally reunited, not that sharing what was essentially a box with a toilet was easy, but they made it, (with a few hiccups). They were both free again, for good this time, ready to officially start their lives together. Ian proposed, twice, because things are never simple. They got married, Mickey got his happy ending. Kind of. If only Terry would die already.
It was the love he felt for Ian that came back first. Even if he couldn’t remember the person he was feeling it for. Dreams of red hair, dugouts and shotgunning beers. The abuse came later, something he wished he could have forgotten forever, but then he saw his face. Freckles upon freckles and a smile that lit up the room. Being shot in the leg by a jealous ex and the first time he went to juvie for that fucker. Them growing older, more heartache and being utterly terrified the first time he realised something was wrong with the man he loved. Why couldn’t he remember his name. He just wanted to find him again.
