sittin' on the shore, now I'm ready for the whole sea
Hiii I saw your requests are open, so I was wondering if I could request a short story for Vernon? 🥺🩷 I had this funny idea where afab!reader sits next to non!idol Vernon on a plane. He offers her his package of nuts, as he's allergic to them. They don't talk much the first hour of the flight, but when reader asks him a movie recommendation he goes ALL OUT. He keeps yapping about the best movies and reader eventually never got the time to watch any of the movies. They exhange phone numbers and keep in touch <3
Thank you for reading and have a nice day ✨️
Love is in the air | chs. (drabble from request)
Pairings: Chwe Hansol x afab! reader Genre: strangers to friends to lovers?
ᯓ 💌 Message from yours truly: Thank you for the request, and apologies for not getting to it since it's near finals season... I love a good strangers-to-lovers trope, and what better than a love at first flight? Hope you enjoy it!!
Masterlist | 📬 Requests open!
"엄마, 저 지금 비행기 안에 있어요… 네, 안전해요… 제 옆자리에 누가 앉아 있죠…? 잘생긴 남자분이시네요… 아, 엄마, 승무원이 곧 전화한다고 혼낼 거예요. 한국에서 봐요!" (Mom, I'm on the plane right now… Yes, I'm safe… who's next to me…? A cute guy… okay, Mom, the flight attendant is going to scold me for calling soon, see you in Korea!)
You cut the phone line before the glaring flight attendant walks over to your direction, as you turn your phone into airplane mode and sit quietly in your seat. You forget sometimes that, despite being older, your mom still deeply cares about you, looking out for you where possible — hence her worry of you flying alone from the States to re-join her in Seoul for a family wedding.
The person... (or cute guy) next to you sits awkwardly as well, unsure if he should greet you or let you both sit in silence. But before long, you both fasten your seatbelts and await the flight's takeoff.
You begin your usual flight routine — putting on your hand sanitiser after coming into contact with the germ-filled airport, cleaning your phone screen, and even placing on your wired headphones. You notice a quick glance from your seat neighbour as you begin untangling and plugging the wired cable into your phone, but pay it no extra mind.
Moments later, you kindly thank the other, less glaring flight attendant for handing you a pack of nuts, which you open and begin munching on in time to the song playing through your earbuds. You become immersed in the song until a simple tap on the shoulder breaks the scene.
You turn to your seat neighbour, who awkwardly smiles and asks you, "Sorry... I'm allergic to nuts... but I also don't want the nuts to go to waste..." he pauses, before looking into your eyes, "Do you... Mind having them for me?"
You feel your heart stop for a second, but your mind rushes to answer, "Yes, of course," you blurt out desperately before your cheeks flush with embarrassment. The man simply chuckles at your nervousness before handing you the packet of nuts, and in an attempt to break the tension, introduces himself.
"Hi, I'm Hansol, but you can call me Vernon," he smiles at you, to which you immediately pause. Hansol? Korean Hansol?
Your mind immediately realises he probably understood your Korean call to your mom, and that you called him a cute guy.
Your cheeks flush even more now in embarrassment, before trying to collect yourself properly and respond to him quietly, "I'm Y/N... nice to meet you."
He notices your awkwardness and, instead of continuing the conversation, simply smiles again with his gummy smile and says casually, "Well... if you need anything else, just let me know," before returning to the book on his lap.
Your heart still feels like you have missed a few beats, but your head simply nods in response, acknowledging his kindness.
After finishing the nuts, you turn to the screen in front of you, flipping through the pages of movies available. You like watching movies, but you're disappointed that your go-to aeroplane film, Crazy Rich Asians, has been removed from the catalogue. Reluctantly, you read through the list of films available until you catch Vernon's eyes glazing over your screen.
He coughs quietly to prepare his voice (or to catch your attention) before answering, "I can help you with movies if you're interested."
You watch his eyes fully immersed in yours, as you yet again flush like no tomorrow. He smiles at your cuteness before gently reaching over and keeping his fingers on your screen, his shoulder a little too close to yours, almost touching.
You feel his heavier breath as he reaches over, perhaps engaging in his core to keep himself closer and yet not too close to keep you uncomfortable.
His fingers land on the Western film section before clicking on the film: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. His eyes light up at the sight of the film on the catalogue, which seemed to cater to very recent films, before he speaks in a cheery tone, "This is the one I like, it's very perfect in my humble opinion."
You nod as he continues explaining, "It perfectly intertwines love and science fiction, alongside the perfect editing that transitions smoothly between the characters' new and old memories. It's truly a masterpiece..."
You normally hate it when men mansplain things, especially when you have seen this film perhaps more than seventeen times, when it is literally one of your favourite ones — but something about Vernon doing it makes you excited to hear someone else's opinion, views, and interpretations of the film.
"Can you watch it with me?" You break the silence after he finishes his comments on the film, and he seems slightly surprised, his eyes widening, until they narrow to a fine line as he smiles and agrees almost immediately.
You hit play in shared mode on the film, and watch the two screens connect as you feel your heart connect to his, watching the same scene replay as you imagine it.
The moment would be perfect, except that Vernon spends the next 30 minutes explaining the setting and concept in detail, causing you both to pause the movie multiple times during the play.
You are truly, and truly immersed in his words, as he speaks with passion and real interest for the film and perhaps movies in general — so much so that the both of you continue the conversation about the film until the pilot's words break the conversation, "The plane will land in approximately five minutes, thank you for taking this flight with us—"
The two of you both pause in silence, meeting each other's gaze in awkwardness at how, despite the long flight, neither of you was able to finish the simple film because you both were too busy speaking about the character design, the plot, the editing and everything...
Vernon breaks the silence, "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have prevented you from seeing the film for the first time—" "Actually, I've seen this time more than seventeen times," you blurt out, refusing to make him feel apologetic for his cute interest.
He pauses, before asking nervously, "So... you willingly watched the film with me... because... you enjoyed our conversation?"
You nod along before adding softly, "Also, because I've liked your company throughout this long-haul flight."
He smiles again with his captivating gummy smile, "You're not the only one who thinks that."
This time, you notice you left the plane not only with an extra packet of nuts stuffed in the pocket of your hoodie, but also an additional phone number saved in your phone, titled "cute aeroplane guy: Vernon", and an invitation to a cinema date in Seoul.
I can solve your problem with one dime piece.
