I have found that most people don't understand the nuance within a lot of relationships (especially real and fictional queer ones), but I was surprised by this in the Falsettos fandom more than anywhere else.

There was first a tendency to characterize Marvin as a stereotypical "abusive man" and Whizzer as a twink, but now there seems to be a push towards arguing Whizzer is "much more masculine" than his lover, which is an equally dubious assumption.

I definitely understand the wish to protect Whizzer's honor against the years of aggressive mischaracterization, but claiming he is fundamentally more masculine than Marvin does not do this. It just shoves them back into the exact gendered boxes that the trilogy is about escaping from.

There aren't designated "masculine" or "feminine" roles in Marvin and Whizzer's relationship, because they're written as conscientious queer men. They express themselves without extreme concern over where their traits and interests fall in the arbitrary masculine-feminine binary, because their experiences as queer people have taught them how stupid those gender roles are. To view one of them as meaningfully more masculine than the other is to totally disregard what is possibly the most central theme in the trilogy.

There's a reason why the theme from In Trousers (The Dream) plays at the end of Falsettoland: the idea Marvin (a mouthpiece for William Finn) held about gender roles–they keep people from being themselves and finding genuine love–has finally unraveled before him in the wake of this loss. If you are a queer person and you try to plug people into set gender dynamics, you are doing your community and those who died to build it up a disservice. If you are a Marvin Trilogy fan and you are doing the same to the musicals' characters, you are being ignorant of its messaging.

Everyone needs to be more critical about the ideas they perpetuate through the fiction they consume and create, especially when it comes to race, class and gender. That being said, I understand how hard it is to find the time to learn and think about these things; unfortunately, we can't all be bell hooks. We just have to remember that if we deny people the right to have relationships free of these oppressive societal dynamics, we deny ourselves the right to find the type of honest connection that makes life fulfilling–and if you, like me, enjoy making friends over Falsettos, that would definitely be a shame.

A lot of Falsettos fans are very young and just genuinely haven’t gotten the chance to explore these topics deeply, which I can’t exactly blame them for. I’m still very young, and I’m sure there are countless details I’ve missed. I just think it’s worth discussing the issue.

In times of great stress, panic, and unfolding news stories, you really don’t have to post. You’re not an embassy. You don’t have to make a statement. The world won’t stop because you decided to read a book this afternoon instead, and current events won’t stop being bad if you just post hard enough. Posting has never been activism. Consider saving posts to your drafts and then returning to them at the end of the day to see if you still want to post them. Consider that those who came before us also went through hard times, but they weren’t mentally tortured by a device in their pocket that blasts bad news into people’s eyeballs for several hours per day. Sometimes you need to ask yourself what you’re really doing besides exacerbating your own misery. You’re already informed, and if something else big happens, you’ll surely see it without having to be glued to your phone.

Oh, and you absolutely do not need to fuck yourself up by viewing real gore and murder, and you should not trust anyone who says otherwise. You can be against a murder without seeing it. You’re not sinful for wanting to spare yourself the mindfuck of seeing real death, because you’re not virtuous for making yourself suffer by seeing it. Again, fucking yourself up helps no one and nothing, and don’t let people guilt you into Catholic martyrdom by convincing you suffering is righteous
