“My Pal” - GOD (1987)
You know, sometimes when I hear a song, I instantly get inspirated to play it as the soundtrack of a short film in my head. “My Pal”, for instance, an ‘80s aussie punk/rock’n’roll classic by GOD, made me think of a heist-going-wrong movie, the other day.
Think of the following, before playing the song: Two young guys, best mates since kids, grow apart when one gets hooked on drugs and eventually takes to crime to support his addiction, while the other manages to get into university. When the junkie is forced to pay back the money he stole from a dealer, he decides to rob a bank and convinces his former friend to help him one last time, but the heist goes terribly wrong, his childhood friend is caught in the crossfire and gets shot. Bleeding out, he is thrown in the getaway car and the junkie drives them away in a pandemonium, while chased by a fleet of police cars.
Final scene (you can now press play): the song’s intro kicks in and the junkie, devastated by his regrets for dragging his former best friend into his mess, thinks about all the happy moments they had together as kids:
“To be a pal in hell, Is something I could never do, I don’t like no-one, Well, except for you, You’re my only friend, You don’t even like me, You’re my only friend, You don’t even like me…”
Not really sure how I would end this, so feel free to pitch in your ideas (and their soundtracks, as well)…
having a good time
