The sunlight danced on her skin as she walked down the gravel path, Luz and Malarkey, just in front of her. Both of them talking about what they would do the second they got back to the states. With the war coming to an end, it was a question that was thrown around a lot. Y/n had dreamed about being home ever since she arrived in Toccoa.
But she soon realized that she didn’t really have a home to go to. Her parents seemed to disowned her after she decided to volunteer, never writing to her even after she wrote dozens of letters to them. She thought of the pain on her mother’s face the last time she looked back as she carried her bags and hopped onto the taxi.
“-y/l/n?” Luz called; it was then that she snapped out of her thoughts. Both of the men ahead of her watched her in confusion as she stopped and stared at the trees. Y/n blinked rapidly before opening her mouth to speak, but nothing really came. Instead, she sighed and walked faster, fast enough to catch up with the men who were back to conversing.
Sitting on one of the steps just outside one of the hotels, y/n stared at nothing in particular. Lost in thought, many of those thoughts, including her parents, what she would do after, everything she had seen, and all the friends she had made. There was an impending fear within her, one that made her want to hold on tight to each boy in the company. All the boys in the company were like her brothers. A new little big family she was happy to have, with a few friends who she had lost in the process.
“Anyone sitting here?” Y/n clicked her tongue and turned to the side, the voice belonging to Ron. The image of the handsome man appeared before her, her mind clear from all the thoughts as her eyes darted over his messy hair.
“Reserved for a handsome thief” y/n teased, smiling as she looked away. Hearing a scoff as he took a seat next to her on the concrete step. Her eyes wandered towards the sky painted with reds and oranges, hints of yellows peeking through.
“Quite beautiful, isn’t it?” He asked as he wrapped his arm around her shoulders, pulling her closer to him. Y/n didn't peel her gaze from the gorgeous sky as she rested her head on his shoulder.
”How was your day Ron?” she asked, taking in the scent of his musk. Her eyes trailing upwards to follow the curve of his jawline. Ron only sighed as he states straight ahead. Right then and there y/n knew that he had a thousand of his own concerns bothering him.
”you want me to be honest?” he asked, pouting a bit, y/n shifted her body just enough to pay her full and undivided attention to him.
”It was long and tiring,” he chuckled, y/n exhaled and waited for him to look at her. ”I wrote reports and letters of recommendation all day,” he sighed, y/n reached for his hand and interlaced her finger with his.
They were quiet for a few seconds, the silence was comforting. With his arms wrapped around her shoulders as they watched the colors of the sky slowly fade into darker and darker shades. The soft evening wind blew a strand of her hair, which tickled her cheeks.
“I can’t believe it’s really over” y/n whispered with a content sigh, it was the same phrase she repeated to herself ever since VE and VJ Day were announced. Ron turned his head and placed a kiss on her forehead.
“What are you doing after this?” He asked y/n exhaled and closed her eyes.
“Probably get a snack, take a shower I don’t know” she unintentionally spoke, Ron furrowed his brows at her answer. Trying to hold back a chuckle as he stared at y/n waiting for her to catch on. Y/n turning to the man as she tried to figure out why he was quiet, suddenly realizing her mistake “oh! You meant after after” she asked, Speirs slowly nodded and laughed. His eyes shut as y/n tried to hide her smile. “Hey!”
“Probably should’ve worded that better, what are you doing after the war?” He asked again, a smile on his face as y/n sighed.
“I don’t know yet,” she sighed, a sad smile on her lips as she thought of her parents. Did they really mean everything they had said to her? “I don’t know where I'm going, I don't really have a place back in the states’’ she chuckled, trying to hide the sadness in her voice as she picked at her nails. Ron sighed and let go of her shoulders, moving the loose strand of hair behind her ear.
“Y/n,’’ he whispered as he brought a finger under her chin to lift her face up. Their eyes meeting once again faces inches apart. Her eyes traveled down and stared at his lips. “Wherever you decide to go,” he whispered, resting his for each against hers.
“I’ll follow you anywhere’’ he finished, y/n chuckled and sighed in relief. “You want to go to Greece? Texas or New Zeland, y/n I will follow you wherever you go,” he whispered, y/n felt her heart thump quicken against her chest.
“Anywhere, huh?’’ she asked, leaning in to connect her lips with his. The kiss was soft, slow. Her hand traveling to rest on the side of his face before he pulled away. A happy smile plastered on his mouth as their noses brushed against each other.
