Today we will see the book “Zona Urbana” of the northamerican artist Justin Clifford Rhody. Justin is a self-taught photographer, based in Oakland, California. He has an impressive work, both in terms of his photographic series, and as well in his parallel projects like slideshows traveling, photo blogs, and self-published zine titled Slo-Mo.
His project “Vernacular Visions” is quite interesting, and will deserve some attention from me in the near future. Below, I leave you to his description of the project:
“Vernacular VISIONS is a public monthly slideshow series of found 35mm photo slides, curated and presented by Justin Rhody since the spring of 2013. Each program is distinctive Accompanied by a unique mix of audio related (and unrelated) sounds & musics. Every other month , half of the night’s program is dedicated to presenting the work of the guest photographer or filmmaker (who either Incorporates found imagery into Their work or self-taught is). This ongoing series is an exploration and celebration of the medium and its subjects, spoken and coded in the visual dialect of the amateur practitioner. Free to attend & open to the public, the show is presented in a relaxed tone Which offers the opportunity for meditative contemplation, as well as casual and comfortable social interaction. ”
Now in relation to the book, “Zona Urbana” is the first book of Mirro Editions, and what a way to start!
It is a book very well done, very complete and well designed. The book’s design was in charge of Justin and Megan Mirro, and was very beautiful, like the pauses between images, the blank pages that gives us time to think, time to meditate on the images that we are seeing.
The cover is very beautiful, I love the image. And printing is also well done.
The project is carried out in Central America (Belize & Guatemala) between the years 2009 and 2012, Justin portrayed a changing society, still very rural, very close to nature, but at the same time with signs of change, with attempts to advance and modernize. We know that this countries are poor, the social problems are obvious, and religion is an escape for the population.
The book is very beautiful, and is clearly recommended.
Thanks to The Unknown Books for the great write-up and for featuring Zona Urbana in its TUB Small Library!
