While you and your character are not the same person- so for Odin's sake don't take things personally- your character will benefit infinitely if you can either identify with them or see things from their point of view. Because it will be different from yours. It may be similar, yes, but there will be subtle differences. They may be more antagonistic than you, or more passive- or even apathetic. Take the time to get out of your own head- take on the role, like an actor... but when the time comes? Drop it. Clear your head.
Create a playlist for your character. You. You create it. Make it perfect. Somewhere around six plus songs long would be a good amount so you don't get tired of the same songs too quickly.
Try to write as if your character were speaking. By this I mean the writing itself, not just when they're speaking- are they a quick speaker, excited? Try writing in short, clipped sentences with the occasional longer one to mix it up when they get into a rambling thought. Or maybe they're slower-paced, so take the time to write out thoughtful, long sentences. It helps to create the mood you're trying to present...whether that be tense, happy, or something else.
[I present to you an example for this below the cut- a sample I wrote for a Walking Dead roleplay.]
Daryl had never put much stock in having an interesting life before the apocalypse showed up on his doorstep and Merle and him hauled ass to Atlanta. But nowadays, what with Shanes group and then it becoming Ricks group, Daryl was offering it a bit more thought every now and then, in the quiet in-between moments when he was bored out of his mind and wasn’t worrying about nothing.
And right now, the quiet was suffocating. The group was spread thin, some doin’ chores and others out hunting… hell, most weren’t doing anything at all. Peering out at them with his chin angled down as he worked on sharpening the blade of the knife he’d recently found, Daryl found his lips pressing together as if they had a mind of their own.
Plenty of new faces, and Daryl wasn’t sure how comfortable he was with that. But hell, it was Ricks decision, and Daryl would stand by the man, just like he had been. And if Rick said it was alright, Daryl listened. Didn’t mean he had to like it, though. Keepin’ an eye on them was the least he could do, and if it made him feel a little better about it, that was no ones business but his own.
Eyes flicking across to the left, he tilted his head in a silent acknowledgement as his eyes met Ricks. Brief, contact in passing, but it soothed him and Daryl stuck the knife into the dirt at his feet, his nose wrinkling as he caught sight of one of the new folk sighing in relief after clearly eyeing him as though he were blind as a bat.
Whatever.
If they didn’t trust him, Daryl didn’t give much of a fuck. They could think what he wanted- Daryl would just make sure Rick didn’t get his fool head into anything that would end up killing him. Shaking his head, Daryl let himself slide fully to the ground, shirt catching on the rough bark of the tree at his back. Yeah, he’d never put much stock in the thought of an interesting life- and Merle would have called him a weak-ass bitch for even thinking about it- but he sure was now.
It was hard not to, when they had walkers chasing after them every goddamn day.
Staring up at the afternoon sky, sleep tugged at his mind, but Daryl shook it off with irritation. Not that he couldn’t sleep- maybe he couldn’t cause he hadn’t been able to much lately- or take a nap, whatever, but Daryl usually had a policy against sleeping during the day. Better to be ready for anything, even if Rick and the others were keeping watch. For now, Daryl sat there, tugging the knife back out of the ground and twirling it in his hand, testing it, and thought. He was good at that, nowadays. Just about the only thing he was good at too, other than killing walkers. Funny how he could still hear Merle as if he were right there, sneering at him and reaching out to pat his cheek.
Despite himself, sitting there, sleep stole him away slowly but surely, the knife slipping from his fingers and his head lolling to the side, warm sun soothing him and cool breeze keeping him at peace. One slip-up was okay. Just the one, just right then, Daryl thought letting his eyes flutter shut, weariness making his bones ache and grief his heart heavy.

I'm not sure what to call it, but it's something I noticed right off the bat when I made my first indie blog. It's a trend of forming phrases or, more often, lyrics into art. I've taken to calling it text art myself, but that's likely a laughable term to explain it. Regardless, it's not only fun though potentially time consuming but a way to prod you into seeking out that song that is just absolutely perfect for your character. Since I can hardly explain what I mean, here's an example:
When that storm comes,
don’t r u n for cover,
don’t run from the {comin’ storm},
cause there ain’t no use in
[ r u n n i n ’ ].
Something like that. Take your time with it. Make it longer. Make it a form of art to express your character. Is your character strong, steadfast? Compose a pattern of pillars and boxes. Are they free-willed, moving as if they are the wind? Throw the lyrics around, make wild patterns. I like to think of it as spending time with my character.
Experiment.

Naming a character is special. Throwing names at a character might work, every now and then, but it's bound to fit like a size seven shoe when you need a size five or ten. Consider your character. Do they fall under an archetype? Can you describe them in three words? Are they strong, are they gentle, weak, loving, cruel... and so on. Now, this list below isn't nearly enough for the full spectrum, but I hope it assists someone somewhere. Keep in mind that this is also merely my opinion. A name may give someone else an entirely different conception and this is a very small sampling(only delving into first names).
